Abstract

Mangrove forests are types of vegetation that grow under the influence of the rising and falling sea water. They play a crucial role ecologically, physically, and economically. However, without proper management, this ecosystem is at risk of harm. In Segarajaya Village, Tarumajaya District, Bekasi Regency, West Java, mangrove forests are threatened by human activities, such as clearing land for fish farming without preserving mangrove vegetation, along with pollution from plastic and household waste. This study aimed to assess the health of mangroves based on two aspects: (1) MHI parameters, which include canopy cover, individual density, and stem diameter; and (2) environmental parameters, which consist of salinity, water and air temperature, soil pH, and substrate type. The method employed is the Mangrove Health Index (MHI), which involves calculating the parameters of canopy cover, stake density, and average stem diameter at breast height, along with environmental parameters (salinity, water and air temperature, soil pH, and substrate) conducted from February 25 to April 20, 2025. The observation site was divided into three stations. Station 1 had the species Rhizophora apiculata, Avicennia marina, and Sonneratia caseolaris. Station 2 was populated with Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Sonneratia caseolaris, while Station 3 only contained Avicennia marina. The MHI value calculations indicated that the mangrove forest's condition falls into the moderate category, with an average MHI value of 61.78%. Station 1 recorded 62.69%, Station 2 61.63%, and Station 3 61.02%. The average values of environmental parameters were a salinity of 30.44‰, water temperature of 27.94°C, air temperature of 30.89°C, soil pH of 7.33, and substrates consisting of sandy clay and mud. This study aims to inform readers about the health conditions of mangroves and serve as a foundation for managing and protecting mangrove forests.

Abstract

This study aims to confirm the species identity of Charybdis affinis from the coastal waters of Tuban, Indonesia, using integrated morphological and molecular approaches. Specimens were examined based on morphological characteristics including carapace shape, anterolateral teeth arrangement, cheliped spination, and dorsal setation. Morphometric analysis showed carapace width ranging from 4.09–4.40 cm and length from 2.68–2.99 cm. Molecular identification was conducted using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. PCR amplification produced a 638 bp DNA fragment. BLAST analysis revealed 99.06% sequence identity with Charybdis affinis in GenBank with 100% query coverage, and the obtained sequence has been deposited in GenBank under accession number PV699569.1. Phylogenetic reconstruction using the Neighbor-Joining method showed that the samples clustered within the C. affinis clade and were clearly separated from closely related species. These findings confirm the first molecular record of C. affinis in Indonesian waters and demonstrate strong agreement between morphological and genetic characteristics. This study provides essential baseline information for biodiversity assessment and sustainable management of portunid crab resources.

Abstract

Marine spatial management in coastal areas faces increasing challenges related to conflicts over space utilization and zoning violations that are often not detected at an early stage. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of participatory marine spatial audits as an instrument for the early detection of conflicts and zoning violations, as well as to derive policy lessons from their implementation in Bekasi Regency. The study employs a participatory qualitative approach involving pentahelix stakeholders, including academia, government, the private sector, media, and coastal communities. The audit process was conducted through a collective assessment based on three main criteria: (i) conflict and risk, (ii) legality and compliance, and (iii) the suitability of the social-ecological system.  The audit results show an aggregate score of 3.08, categorized as “moderately compliant/requiring capacity building,” indicating that marine space utilization is relatively controlled but still requires strengthened governance. The participatory marine spatial audit proved effective in revealing latent conflicts, gaps between regulations and actual practices, and the influence of socio-economic factors on zoning compliance. Respondent characteristics, such as institutional background, age, education level, household size, and income level, were found to influence perceptions and audit assessment outcomes.  This study concludes that participatory marine spatial audits function not only as a technical evaluation tool but also as a mechanism for social learning and policy capacity building. Integrating marine spatial audits into local policy cycles has the potential to enhance early conflict detection, improve zoning compliance, and support sustainable and equitable marine spatial management.

Abstract

Fishery exports from Bali Province to Australia deserve specific analysis because Indonesia's fishery sector remains an important source of foreign exchange and non-oil and gas trade performance. This study seeks to evaluate the value and volume of Indonesian fisheries product exports to Australia from 2021 to 2024, emphasizing the effects of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) on these exports. The secondary data utilized encompasses the volume and value of exports for key commodities, including snapper, tuna, and pearls, sourced from the Fish Quarantine, Quality Control, and Safety of Fishery Products Center in Denpasar. A quantitative descriptive method employing time series trend analysis was utilized to depict monthly and annual variations and pinpoint turning points in Indonesian fisheries product exports. During 2021–2024, total exports reached 4,573,914.66 kg with a value of IDR 3,140,480,920,986.20. The highest export volume occurred in 2022 at 1,344,631.19 kg, while the highest export value occurred in 2024 at IDR 1,180,927,685,795.86. Compared with 2023, export value in 2024 increased by 119.05%, whereas volume increased by only 23.50%, indicating that the value increase was driven mainly by improved unit value and a shift toward higher-value commodities. Tuna contributed 41.35% of cumulative volume and 34.78% of cumulative value, while pearls contributed 27.38% of cumulative value with only 2.66% of cumulative volume. The number of commodity groups increased from 22 in 2021 to 27 in 2024. These findings indicate that Bali's export performance to Australia was shaped not only by volume expansion but also by commodity structure, product quality, and market diversification. IA-CEPA is therefore interpreted as a policy context that strengthens market access, rather than as the sole causal factor; further econometric testing is required to estimate its causal impact.
