Abstract

Language acquisition is a complex process and is influenced by various factors such as environment, nutrition, and social interaction. This study aims to identify language acquisition barriers faced by sixth grade elementary school students in the community. Through qualitative research methods, observations, interviews and reading tasks were conducted with 30 children, fifteen of whom worked part-time after school, and fifteen of whom did not. Findings indicated a significant difference in language acquisition between the two groups, leading to the identification of eight factors that impede language development. These factors included lack of learning activities at home, excessive focus on work or non-academic activities, malnutrition, limited two-way interaction, lack of attention when communicating, excessive gadget use, and low self-confidence. Understanding these barriers provides insights for educators, parents and policy makers to create a supportive environment that encourages effective language development in children.

Abstract

Writing is crucial for language proficiency, ensuring clarity and flow through cohesion. This study analyzes the use of cohesive devices in recount texts by high-achieving undergraduate EFL students at a university in Kediri. Using discourse analysis, five student writings were examined to determine the frequency and types of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices. The findings reveal that references and conjunctions are the primary grammatical devices used, with demonstrative references and temporal conjunctions being most prevalent. Lexical cohesion is mainly achieved through repetition, followed by synonyms, meronyms, and hyponyms. While students effectively use these devices to create coherence, there is a heavy reliance on repetition, indicating a need for more variety in lexical strategies. This study highlights the importance of cohesive devices in writing quality and provides insights for educators to develop targeted interventions to enhance students' writing skills.

Abstract

This article discusses the adjustments that new students at the Islamic boarding school must make after losing 53 days of study time. This delay is caused by their need to wait for their final exams at their previous schools due to differences between the boarding school’s academic calendar and the government’s academic calendar. This situation creates a dilemma for these students, who need to catch up on the lessons from the beginning of the books they missed. The research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis at the Miftahul Ulum Bettet Islamic Boarding School in Pamekasan. To address this issue, the school administration seeks solutions, including(1) Conducting special tests for new students to assess their basic knowledge of religious studies.(2) Creating special classes for new students to ensure they start learning from the beginning of the books.(3) Combining classes with existing students while providing additional guidance to new students on the lessons they missed. Supervision, direction, and coordination from the boarding school administrators, formal school managers, and the students’ guardians are highly encouraged to support the education of the new students, who come from various different backgrounds.
