Abstract

This article explores the aesthetic reception of the modern marble inscription of the Qur'an and its underlying meaning. The study uses field research and locates its research locus at Masjid Al-Muhtaram, Kajen, Pekalongan Regency where the marble stone is kept. The research adopts Wolfgang Iser's reception theory to analyse the meaning of the marble stone Al-Qur'an from an aesthetic standpoint. The results show that the marble stone inscription of the Qur'an was made by Nur Hidayat Siba, starting in 2011 until 2021, and has reached 13 juz of the Qur'an. The marble measures 60 x 90 cm with a thickness of 2 cm, and is written with beautiful khat and gold colour wrapping on every khat. The inscription provides three meanings of aesthetic reception. Firstly, the objective meaning of the Qur'an as a holy book must be preserved through beautiful media as a form of appreciation for the greatness of the Qur'an. Secondly, the expressive meaning is used as a medium of Islamic da'wa, and spirituality increases faith and religious aspects for those who see and read it. Finally, the meaning of documentary serves as a form of habitus to always interact with the Qur'an in everyday life. These three meanings illustrate the diversity of meanings in the aesthetic reception of the marble Al-Qur'an. The study contributes to the body of knowledge by shedding light on the significance of aesthetic reception of the Qur'an and highlights the importance of preserving the holy book through beautiful media.

Abstract

The Qur'an is considered a guide for all of humanity, offering valuable insights and guidance that is adaptable to changing circumstances and the challenges of modern life. This paper focuses on the issue of theft in times of emergency, which is an issue of concern for many societies today. In particular, the paper examines the Quranic verse, QS Al-Mā’idah 5:38, which states that men and women who steal are punished by having their hands cut off. The paper employs Abdullah Saeed's interpretation method, which emphasizes the importance of contextualizing Quranic verses in response to contemporary realities. The findings of the study indicate that the verse in question has a universal value in terms of justice, as it seeks to ensure that people's basic rights are protected and fulfilled in order to prevent theft. However, if basic needs are not met and a person is forced to steal in order to survive, it may be permissible to do so, as long as the limits of necessity are not exceeded. The verse also has a temporal nature, as the law of cutting hands can be replaced with alternative punishments, depending on the circumstances. In the Islamic context, this alternative might be ta'zir, while in the Indonesian context, it might involve a restorative justice process. Overall, the paper offers valuable insights into how the Qur'an can be interpreted to address the challenges of modern life, especially in times of emergency. The study highlights the importance of contextualizing Quranic verses in order to respond effectively to changing circumstances, while still upholding the core values of justice and compassion.
Intertextuality and Late Antiquity in Michael E. Pregill's Interpretation of the Worship of the Golden Calf in Surah Thāhā: 83-97 Amatullah, Nur Afra Afifah Amani; Najiyah, Nur Laili Nabilah Nazahah; Rohmaniyah, Inayah

Abstract

Michael E. Pregill argues that the story in Surah Thāhā: 83-97 reflects an interpretation trend of a story in the Bible, thriving among Jews and Christians in Late Antiquity, about Israelites who worshipped the golden calf. Pergill also argues about the intertextuality between the Qur’an and Bible. This study aims to comprehensively examine Pregill’s interpretation of Surah Thāhā: 83-97 as it responds to the differences in detailed stories of golden calf worship in the Qur’an and Bible and various interpretations of Al-Sāmīrī. Primary data of this qualitative study included a book entitled The Golden Calf between Bible and Qur’an: Scripture, Polemic, and Exegesis from Late Antiquity to Islam. Relevant data were collected and analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. According to Pregill, Al-Sāmīrī was a literary work of the Qur’an using biblical materials; then, Qur’an applied it to Harun’s name and emphasized his role as the Israelites’ guardian. The intertextuality between Qur’an and Bible was perceived from the possibility of using Ethiopic Bible materials to retell the event. In response to interpretation trends focusing on covenant, priesthood, and idolatry themes, Pregill argues that the Qur’an has affirmed Harun’s position as the Priest under Moses the Prophet.

Abstract

This article explores the concept of Ridha in the Qur'an, focusing on its background and purpose. The concept of Ridha is inseparable from the ongoing debate between Sunnis and Shiites, who have differing interpretations of the concept in order to legitimize their respective ideologies. The study employs a thematic method, analysing the views of Ibn Asyur in the tafsir Tahrir wa Tanwir, which relates to the concept of Ridha. The results reveal that Ibn Asyur divided the concept into two: Ridha among fellow humans and Ridha from God to His creations. The Qur'an, being a holy text that guides mankind, delves into the topic of Ridha and presents it in two aspects: Ridha Allah and Ridha man. Although these two aspects appear together in the same verse, the Qur'an also emphasizes the inequality of God with His being (tanzih), making both types of Ridha part of the mutasyabihat concept. To fully understand the meaning, it is necessary to differentiate between Ridha Allah and Ridha Human. Through his book, Tahrir wa Tanwir, Ibn Asyur aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Ridha from both the human aspect and as the nature of Allah SWT.

Abstract

This paper examines tafsir as one of the oldest scientific disciplines developed by Muslims, who experienced dialectical shifts from time to time. Early tafsir was characterized by the bi al-mathur tradition or by its reliance on riwayah sources. While it is commonly argued that this mode of interpretation leaves no place for the mufassir's intervention, his subjectivity and rationality in choosing the preferred tradition cannot be ignored. Following that, tafsir evolved according to the bi al-ra'yi tradition which is believed to emphasize the mufassir’s reasoning while interpreting the Qur’an. This paper is addressed to examine this categorization, using Sherman Jackson’s traditions of reason that aim to compromise tafsir with varying hues of traditionalist and rationalist perspectives. This paper employs the library method by reviewing relevant literature to answers the main question. In the end, the limitations of a tafsir can be accepted as traditions of reason as long as the interpretation adheres to the fundamental criteria of interpretation. This includes mufassir’s profound understanding, no conflict with other verses or hadith, and, in many cases, its conformity with logic. Traditional and Rational elements are complementary and must be addressed proportionately. The emphasis on reason has the potential to lead to the mufassir's personal preferences and biases. Meanwhile, the usage of traditional riwayah will limit interpretive space and the context's applicability.

Abstract

The impact of digital technology on Indonesian society has been profound, leading to changes in cultural and religious practices. This study focuses on the phenomenon of Gus Baha's Jalalayn Tafsir recitation on YouTube and aims to understand how this has become a contemporary fragment in the history of tafsir recitation in Indonesian pesantrens. The study employs a media theory approach popularized by Marshall McLuhan to analyze the workings and impact of this recent phenomenon. McLuhan's theory includes three main ideas, such as Medium is The Message and Medium as Extension of Man, which are used to explore the new workings of Gus Baha's Jalalayn Tafsir recitation on YouTube, as well as the Global Village and Technology Determinism to understand the impact of this phenomenon. The study seeks to answer two key questions: (1) how is the phenomenon of Gus Baha's Tafsir recitation on YouTube and (2) how it has become part of the long history of pesantren tradition. The results of this study will provide insights into how digital technology has changed religious practices in Indonesia and the role of YouTube in this change.

Abstract

This article examines the changes in the interpretation of the illustration of heaven among Indonesian mufassirin (interpreters), including As-Singkili, Hamka, and M. Quraish Shihab, using Thomas Kuhn's paradigm shift theory. The study reveals a shift in the meaning of the illustration of heaven in each generation of interpreters in Indonesia, particularly in the areas of the width of heaven, the river that flows beneath heaven, fruits in heaven, spouses and houris (heavenly virgins) in heaven, and the color green and adornment for humans in heaven. The article concludes that As-Singkili's interpretation is considered normal science as it remains literal, whereas Hamka and M. Quraish Shihab's interpretations are categorized under scientific revolution due to the rationalization and development of their interpretations still based on normal science or literal texts. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the evolution of interpretation of Islamic texts in Indonesia.

Abstract

Democracy has become a subject of debate among Muslim intellectuals due to its non-primary source origin from Islam. The journey of democracy in the Islamic world is accompanied by both support and opposition. Nevertheless, this does not imply that the Qur'an is incapable of addressing these issues. Despite not being explicitly mentioned, the concept of democracy can be discerned through implicit messaging and the process of interpretation. One of the verses that encompasses this concept is QS. Ali Imran: 159. This article aims to unveil the implicit message by employing a contemporary verse interpretation approach known as mana-cum-maghza. This approach results in the identification of five elements that constitute Qur'anic democracy. Firstly, upholding divine values. Secondly, exhibiting a humanitarian and unifying attitude. Thirdly, implementing decisions that arise from conferences, which can take the form of regulations and power transfer (democratic in nature). Fourthly, adhering to legal sources that are applicable to all citizens. Lastly, entrusting specialized individuals with the responsibility of managing specific fields.
