Abstract

This paper discusses the Rida controversy with hadith scholars. The controversy stems from Rida’s a priori to the traditions that are popular and well-known among hadith scholars, especially the category of khabar al-ahad hadith. The root of their problem lies in Rida’s rational critique of the categories and implications of khabar al-ahad. He considers dilalah (connotation) of khabar al-ahad to be nothing more than just zanni al-dilalah (presumption and uncertainty). The implication is that hadith in this category cannot be used as a basis for belief because belief is based on qat’i al-dilalah (certainty of proposition). The research method used was descriptive-analytic method. This method was combined with a historical-philosophical approach. Therefore, analyzing and describing Rida’s thoughts as a whole is the main work in this article. The next step was to combine the analytical-philosophical approach to the roadmap from the genuine part of Rida’s line of thought. This activity is expected to help the author in finding answers on how Rida rationalizes khabar al-ahad and its implications. Finally, this article finds the conclusions, including: a) Rida’s efforts in rationalizing khabar al-ahad are based on the views of the mutakallimūn (theologians), manat}iqah (logic experts) and falasifah (philosophers), b) Rida has been trapped in his own over a priori thinking on khabar al-ahad, c) Rashid Rida’s rationalization of khabar al-ahad actually leads to ambiguity and uncertainty.

Abstract

This article discusses an alternative perspective in understanding the content of the Qur’an i.e., the perspective of minority Muslim scholars. The object of this study is the thought of tafsir Abdullah Saeed and Farid Esack who are positioned as Muslim scholars of Western institutions living as a minority, how their views of the Qur’an and how they develop interpretive methodologies according to the context of the environment in which they live. This article shows that the construction of the thought of Abdullah Saeed and Farid Esack positioned as minority scholars can represent its own contemporary model of interpretation. Abdullah Saeed with the idea of contextual interpretation laid out three bases of interpretive methodology: hierarchical values, contextual meaning, and systematic contextual interpretation. The three bases of the methodology are used to see the extent to which verses on ethical law can be understood and practiced in contemporary contexts while remaining grounded in the substance of the values carried when they are derived. While Farid Esack with his idea of liberative exegesis tried to break conservatism in South Africa with three methodological foundations: progressive revelation, reception hermeneutics, and the liberation theology of the Qur’an. The foundation of this methodology was used as a basis for value and legitimacy in supporting the agenda of popular solidarity between Muslims and non-Muslims in South Africa to overthrow the apartheid regime.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the development of ancient archipelago manuscripts which had not been widely enjoyed by academic reviewers. One of them is Qur’an Manuscript of Lamongan. This assumption is motivated by a statement stating that the Al-Qur’an in the archipelago has content in terms of text, namely written and in the same shape. The existence of Qur’an Manuscript manuscripts is not a problem and it is not even functioning. The primary data source uses Qur’an Manuscript manuscripts in the Sunan Drajat Lamongan Museum, and several other secondary sources that are related with the issue of the Mushaf and dhabt Al-Qur`an. Meanwhile, the data analysis method used is the structural analysis method, which describes and explains aspects of the work that produce comprehensive works. The results of this study show that the archaic archipelago manuscripts have similarities with the Indonesian Standard Mushaf from various aspects such as the affixing the punctuation of hamzah washal and hamzah qatha ‘, which are included in the breadfruit sign in the reading of izhar, idgham, ikhfa, iqlab in nun sakinah. Meanwhile, other punctuation marks have changed. The use of dhabt in Qur’an Manuscript Lamongan manuscripts from beginning to end experiences consistency, that is, the punctuation in the mushaf does not change shape. The existence of this ancient manuscript has several implications including: implications for the way of the Al-Qur’an, implications for interpretation, and implications that are informative. Such conditions are compiled from data generated from several well documented documentation. Meanwhile, if it is viewed from relevance, there is an inequality between Qur’an Manuscript Lamongan manuscripts and the Indonesian Standard Mushaf in the form of dots, i’rab (harakat rafa’, nashab, jar or jazem), naqish (less) or ziyadah (added) letters, tabdil (replacement letters or words), etc. So that it can force relevance will cause damage to the meaning in the reading of the Al-Qur`an.

Abstract

The problem of music, painting (drawing), and dance in Islam still has differences of opinion regarding the banning of the three. This variety of opinions arises based on verses from the Qur`an and hadith to strengthen their respective arguments. This study reveals how the hadiths about art could be understood and contextualized using the Ma’na-Cum-Maghza Sahiron approach, as well as their relevance in the study of hadith. This qualitative study uses sociological and historical approaches, and the data obtained are analyzed using explanatory analysis techniques. There are two findings in this study: first, in the hadiths of music, painting (drawing) and dance, there is no message that implies a prohibition on these three arts. The hadiths appeared and only took effect at that time or according to the context of certain events behind the emergence of these hadiths. Second, in the current context, the meaning and application of these hadiths must be relevant to the times by paying attention to human interests and needs. If these arts turn out to have a positive impact on human life, then it is possible that these arts can be applied. In the context of hadith studies, the combination of studies of discussions related to art and the application of Ma’na-Cum-Maghza approach is useful for understanding all three in one study so that the understanding of them becomes more integral-comprehensive.

Abstract

Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad b. Maḥmūd al-Samarḳandī (d. 333/944), the founder of the Māturīdiyya sect, is one of the significant scholars of the Hanafi sect. Imam Māturīdī is a scholar in the history of Islamic science who became famous for a theologian (mutaqallim), interpreter (mufassir) and jurist (faqīh), and is known for his Kitāb al-Tawḥīd. Besides that, Māturīdī and his commentary entitled Taʼwīlāt al-Qurʼān - one of the earliest tafsir bi al-ra’y (bi-al dirayah) examples of the exegetical literature- have broadly been studied in Turkish theology academia especially in recent years. This study aims to discuss the verses related to Abū  Bakr’s (d. 13/634) caliphate in Imam al-Māturīdī’s Taʼwīlāt al-Qurʼān in terms of the distinction between tafsir and ta’wil. As it is known, the distinction between tafsir and ta’wil is based on Māturīdī’s writings. According to this distinction, tafsir is the process of interpretation particularly by the companions whereas ta’wil is done by the fuqaha. Therefore it is appropriate to say that tafsir means “contextual meaning” while ta’wil stands for “commentation.” As a matter of fact, Māturīdī also explains the word tafsir as the first and original meaning of the Qur’an in the context of its revelation. However, he explains in his Taʼwīlāt al-Qurʼān many verses by associating them with some issues that emerged after the revelation of the Qur’an, thus making “ta’wil.” Moreover, he gave the title Taʼwīlāt to his work in accordance with this understanding. In this study, it will be discussed whether Māturīdī’s well-known definition of tafsir contradicts or not with his commentation on the verses that he claims pointing to Abū Bakr’s caliphate and/or his superiority. The verses considered evidence for Abū Bakr’s caliphate and/or his superiority in Taʼwīlāt al-Qurʼān will be scanned and in this context, the way Māturīdī understands and interprets verses such as al-Maidah 5/54, at-Tawbah 9/40, Hūd 11/84 and al-Hadid 57/19 will be analyzed.

Abstract

This article aims to explain Ibn Atiyya’s method to revealing Israiliyyat stories in his interpretation of al-Muharrar al-Wajiz. This research is an attempt to see how far Ibn Atiyya’s consistency is in applying the general method he has described in the preliminary of his tafsir when interacting with Israiliyyat stories. Apart from that, this research also seeks to explore Ibn Atiyya’s detailed method when presenting the Israiliyyat narrations in its interpretation and expose the practical examples as the application of the method. Using the analytical descriptive method, this study finds that Ibn Atiyya is quite consistent in applying the general method he has described in the preliminary of his tafsir by mentioning important Israiliyyat stories that can’t be separated from the explanation of the meaning of the verse. In contrast to the previous commentators who mentioned the Israiliyyat narrations in length and width, Ibn Atiyya described Israiliyyat reports briefly and criticized the narrations that had no basis or arguments sahih that could be justified. In addition, this study also found that Ibn Atiyya was careful in taking Israiliyyat stories and trying to free the tafsir from the Israiliyyat stories which was not based on the explanation of the Prophet Muhammad. Ibn Atiyyah also calls for reducing the stories of Israiliyyat in the tafsir literature and sometimes also adding comments and criticisms to the narrations of Israiliyyat that he mentions.

Abstract

This article examines the interpretation model of Tarjumān al-Mustafīd as a means to address the need for Qur'anic interpretation for the general public. Using a qualitative method with content analysis and a systematic literature review, the study explores the approach used by Abd al-Raūf al-Fanṣūrī in his interpretation of the Qur'an. The results of the study indicate that al-Fanṣūrī's interpretation model includes three key elements: avoiding interpretations based solely on word meanings, providing context through asbāb al-nuzūl, narration isrāīlīyāt, historical accounts, and faidah letter explanations, and reconciling meanings to avoid controversial interpretations in both law and belief. The study concludes that Tarjumān al-Mustafīd is not a translation of classical interpretations, but rather a reproduction of al-Fanṣūrī's interpretation, referencing classical Arabic sources, and should not be referred to as a translation of Arabic interpretation into Malay. Overall, the interpretation model of Tarjumān al-Mustafīd provides a solution for addressing the need for Qur'anic interpretation for the general public and is a valuable contribution to the field of Qur'anic interpretation.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of the tradition of Pengaosan Tafsir al-Ibriz on the socio-religious changes of the Kedawung community. The tradition is seen as a means of promoting social integration in the community, particularly in addressing multi-sectoral problems related to religious observance, cultural reception with religion, and economic cooperation. The research employs a qualitative approach, using observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques, and is guided by the social construction phenomenology approach by Peter L. Berger and the structural functionalism theory by Talcott Parsons. The results show that the tradition of Pengaosan Tafsir al-Ibriz has become a participatory religious tradition that alternates between the residents' houses and has helped to awaken social and transcendental piety, creating a conducive environment and psychological calm. Furthermore, the tradition has strengthened the social integration of the residents by promoting empathy and affection, thereby boosting the economy through cooperation. This study highlights the significance of religious traditions in promoting social integration in communities facing multi-sectoral problems, and provides valuable insights for other communities seeking to promote social integration through religious traditions.
