Abstract

The publication of Qur'an in Indonesia reflects the direction of the publishing industry, which emphasizes products that are not only informative but also interesting and entertaining for readers. This phenomenon was triggered by a response to society's need for access to additional, more complete information. However, innovations like color tajwid have sparked controversy. Further research into the publication of the Qur'an in Indonesia is necessary to fully understand its impact. This study, employing the concept of edutainment, examines how Al-Qur'an manuscripts in Indonesia integrate learning theories and edutainment approaches. Utilizing analytical descriptive methods alongside philosophical-speculative and phenomenological approaches, fifteen manuscripts were analyzed. These manuscripts effectively meet readers' needs while incorporating educational theories and edutainment strategies. Additionally, there is an emphasis on technological innovation, particularly in visual learning methods that utilize both technological and non-technological features. Despite these advancements, the teacher's role remains crucial in promoting independent learning, especially within the context of Qur'an study.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the relationship between digitizing interpretation, texts, messages, and societal practices through the transformation, reception, and deconstruction of Tafsir Al-Mishbah. The issue of digitizing interpretation is often viewed solely through the lens of technological transition and historical narrative, overlooking its societal implications. This study seeks to delve into the interplay among these elements by examining the digitization process, features of the digital application, and societal reception of Tafsir Al-Mishbah. It outlines three problem formulations: the digitalization process, features in the digital application, and reception within the digitization phenomenon. To address these formulations, a qualitative netnographic research method was employed. Data were collected through observation and documentation, primarily from video recordings on the Quraish Shihab YouTube channel, which provides insights into the digitization process and various versions of Tafsir Al-Mishbah. The research concludes that digitalization serves as a means to transform Tafsir Al-Mishbah, enabling independent Qur’an study while maintaining ties with authoritative figures. It bridges innovations with limitations present in printed editions, catering to the public's needs. Furthermore, the digitization of Tafsir Al-Mishbah is closely tied to Quraish Shihab's interpretation of divine promises, as referenced in QS. al-Qamar [54]: 17, 22, 32, and 40. This study highlights the often-overlooked aspects of digitalization, showcasing its relationship with innovation, ideology, and public reception. It underscores that the transformation of religious texts, including the Qur’an and Tafsir, contributes to the discourse on the living Qur’an and living Tafsir.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of inclusive Qur’anic pedagogy by the Qur'an Indonesia Project (QIP), with a focus on its Sign Language translation initiative and inclusive teaching methods. QIP, in collaboration with The Little Hijabi Home Schooling, has launched QuranIDprojectISYARAT, a digital-based endeavor aiming to improve access to the Qur’an and its translations, especially for individuals with disabilities. The QuranIDProjectISYARAT program, developed by QIP, targets the deaf community and provides Qur’anic education through platforms like Instagram and YouTube, utilizing audio, visuals, and Sign Language demonstrations. While QIP utilizes Arabic Sign Language for Qur’an translation, their interpretive process prioritizes understanding Qur’anic meanings over morphemes. This study delves into QIP's Qur’an translation process and inclusive teaching practices, particularly focusing on the experiences of deaf or hearing-impaired individuals. By employing a netnography approach and conducting interviews with QIP's YouTube viewers, the research investigates interactions within QIP's online platforms and gathers insights into viewers' perspectives. The findings suggest that QIP's Qur’an translation incorporates Arabic Sign Language and volunteers' interpretations or improvisations of verses, fostering comprehension and a sense of inclusion among learners in their online Qur’anic education initiatives.

Abstract

The concept of gender equality is crucial in reinforcing societal foundations and addressing issues of injustice. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding gender equality within the context of families, recognized as one of society'smost influential institutions. By exploring gender dynamics within the family, this research draws on the Hadith, which encapsulates historical records and narratives from the Prophet Muhammad's life in a patriarchal Arab society. Despite societal norms, the Prophet’s Hadith texts, driven by principles of equality and justice, advocate for equal relationships between men and women, sparking considerable debate and protest from his contemporaries. The significance of Hadith texts from Ummul Mukminin (the Mothers of the Believers) in discussing gender relations within the family lies in their potential to serve as a reference source. Utilizing content analysis as a methodology, this research provides a comprehensive examination of relevant Hadiths and their implications for modern gender equality within the family. The findings highlight the Prophet’s dedication to creating a model of marital relations based on mutual respect, compassion, and equality. The study positions these texts as guides for families, helping them reinforce their functions and internalize equality values, contributing to the formation of a maslahah family—a family governed by principles prioritizing societal well-being.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the Tafsir produced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, specifically focusing on the potential politicization of the Qur’an, particularly in the narrative of inter-religious relationships in Indonesia. The study underscores the crucial role of Tafsir in shaping societal perceptions of religious pluralism in the country. In this context, a significant question arises concerning the extent to which the interpretations generated through the state's political mechanisms contribute to the discourse on religious pluralism. To address this inquiry, the critical discourse analysis approach by Norman Fairclough is employed, encompassing three dimensions: text analysis, discursive practices, and social practices. The analysis focuses on the Tafsir produced in 1980 by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs titled "Al-Qur’an dan Tafsirnya." The research reveals that the narrative regarding inter-religious relationships in Indonesia within the official Tafsir is not solely connected to the state's role through the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia. It is also influenced by various factors such as the socio-religious context and the role of Mufassir (mufasir). This situation is reflected through three patterns of state affirmation: Affirmative-Accommodative, Affirmative-Permissive, and Affirmative-Disruptive. The substantial contribution of this research lies in enhancing the understanding of the intricate relationship between religious exegesis, state politics, and radicalism in Indonesia. This opens avenues for further reflection and debate in scholarly literature, particularly regarding the impact of state involvement in the Qur’an interpretation process on the narrative of inter-religious relationships in Indonesia.

Abstract

The exegetical products concerning women in institutional Quranic interpretations in Indonesia are significantly influenced by ideological contestation, cultural and social structures, and the political authority behind the exegetical writing teams. Consequently, textual comprehension may become biased and not entirely objective. Given this, exploring the ideological aspects underlying the production of religious texts is of paramount importance. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method with Michael Foucault's power relations approach to uncover the ideological dimensions behind exegetical production. Through this approach, the research addresses how societal social structures and state ideologies can influence the production of exegeses regarding women's roles and status in institutional interpretations in Indonesia. The study found that the interpretation of women's leadership in the Thematic Quranic Exegesis of Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia is not only influenced by factors such as gender, women's characteristics, perceived female inability to address state issues, and the entrenched patriarchal culture in Indonesia, but also by motives of ideological contestation underlying interpretative production. Contextually, this exegesis was produced by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2009 during a presidential election contest between male and female candidates. The research concludes that exegetical production in Indonesia is affected by social contexts and power ideologies. The primary contribution of this study lies in tracing the aspects of ideological contestation, societal social structures, and the role of those in power behind the emergence of gender-related exegetical products in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the Ismaili method of interpreting Qur’anic verses, focusing on their esoteric hermeneutics. The Quran serves as a fundamental legislative source for various theological factions, each seeking to substantiate their claims by referencing its verses. It also stands as a principal source for muhaddithin, fuqahā (jurisprudents), and others, contributing to the emergence of tafsir, a discipline aimed at elucidating the Quran's meanings and intentions. Consequently, different schools of interpretation, or tafsir, have developed over time. One strand of interpretation adheres to the literal meaning of the text, known as Zāhir, while another explores mystical or esoteric meanings, termed Bātin, occasionally without strong support from Arabic language or Qur’anic and Hadith evidence. Among Shiite sects, the Ismailis distinguish themselves as one of the most enduring, recognizing Ismail bin Ja'far al-Sādiq as their Imam and establishing influential states in Islamic history, such as the Qarmatian state in Bahrain (899–1077) and the Fatimid Caliphate in North Africa (909/1171). To thoroughly investigate this subject, a qualitative research approach is proposed. Given the historical and theological nature of the topic, qualitative methods, such as textual analysis and historical research, facilitate a comprehensive exploration and interpretation of complex phenomena. The findings of this research indicate that Ismailism has heavily relied on the esoteric interpretation of Qur’anic verses since its inception, aligning with Ismaili belief systems, with Qur’anic verses assuming a more significant role than Hadith in their doctrinal framework. The essence of this article lies in delving into the Ismaili approach to esoteric hermeneutics, predominantly drawing from the sect's primary sources.

Abstract

The Indonesian Qur’anic tafsirs represent a contextual approach. Each tafsir scholar has different characteristics in contextualizing the meaning of the Qur’an so that it is relevant to contemporary Indonesian society. This article aims to show the dynamic character of Indonesian Qur’anic interpretation in contextualizing the meaning of the verses about Moses in the Indonesian context. This research uses a comparative method against the al-Azhar tafsir written by Haji Abdul Malik bin Karim Amrullah, also known as Hamka, and the Tafsir al-Mishbāh by M. Quraish Shihab. The three aspects compared and the research questions include: How is the story of Prophet Moses narrated in the two tafsir books? What are the interpretation methods used in the verses about the story of Prophet Moses, and how can the lessons from the story of Prophet Moses align with the Indonesian cultural context? The research results show that both tafsir books have similarities in making the story of Moses relevant to Indonesian society. The difference is that Tafsir al-Mishbāh appears more disciplined in following the textual meaning of the Qur’anic verses. In contrast, Tafsir al-Azhar is more flexible in its storytelling improvisation, making the story of Moses more cohesive and engaging. Shihab understands the story of Moses as Allah’s plan to overthrow human arrogance (Pharaoh), with a narrative flow following Allah’s laws. This retelling represents Shihab’s traditionalist and pragmatic thinking. In contrast, Hamka is more rational and critical. He views the story of Moses as a struggle and heroism that teaches the importance of hard work and intelligence in facing life’s challenges. The findings of this research contribute to showing the dynamic nature of Indonesian contextual tafsir. It illustrates how the Qur’anic interpretation maintains its textual meaning while remaining relevant for contemporary readers.

Abstract

This study explores the reception and impact of Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar across the Malay world, particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapore. Tafsir Al-Azhar, written by the renowned Malay scholar Hamka, is a significant work of Qur'anic exegesis that has influenced Islamic thought in Southeast Asia. By employing a qualitative research method, specifically a case study with phenomenological analysis, this research investigates how Tafsir Al-Azhar has been received, interpreted, and utilized by various Muslim communities in these regions. The study examines the historical context in which Hamka's work was produced, focusing on its dissemination and its pivotal role in addressing socio-religious issues from the mid-20th century to the present day. By applying reception theory, the analysis highlights the dynamic interaction between the text and its readers, revealing how interpretations of Tafsir Al-Azhar have evolved in response to shifting social, political, and cultural landscapes. The research also explores the influence of external religious streams, modernity, and globalization on the Malay Muslim identity, and how these factors have shaped the adaptation and reception of traditional tafsir practices. The findings suggest that while Tafsir Al-Azhar has become a central reference in the religious life of Malay Muslims, its reception varies significantly across different countries. These variations are influenced by local cultural, religious, and political contexts, as well as by Hamka's personal interactions with these communities. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of Qur'anic interpretation in Southeast Asia, emphasizing the importance of contextualizing tafsir to address the diverse needs and challenges of Muslim communities in the region.

Abstract

This article examines the book Tafsīr al-Ibrīz, written by KH Bisri Mustofa, a prominent Javanese exegesis. The book has been re-read and interpreted orally by his son, Gus Mus (KH Ahmad Mustofa Bisri), on his YouTube channel. This study highlights a new tradition in the digital era where Qur'anic exegesis is transmitted and transformed through both written texts and oral interpretations. This research employs a qualitative approach, using primary data from the official YouTube Channel of Gus Mus and secondary data from relevant scholarly literature. Document analysis and descriptive-analytic methods reveal a significant paradigm shift between the written and oral exegesis. Specifically, gender issues such as polygamy and women's leadership, which are presented with a gender-biased perspective in the written Tafsīr al-Ibrīz, are reinterpreted by Gus Mus with a focus on gender equality. This transformation is influenced by the socio-cultural context, Gus Mus's educational background, and the changing audience of the oral exegesis. The study incorporates gender equality theory, highlighting forms of gender inequality like marginalization, subordination, stereotyping, violence, and double burden. The findings suggest that Gus Mus's oral exegesis reflects an egalitarian interpretation, contrasting with the traditional views in Tafsīr al-Ibrīz, thus promoting fair treatment for both women and men. This research contributes to the discourse on gender and Qur'anic exegesis by demonstrating the dynamic nature of oral interpretation in the Indonesian pesantren context and its impact on advancing gender equality in Islamic thought.
