Abstract

Aims: Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 have been shown to experience high levels of anxiety, according to studies of their mental health, and yet these patients' states of mind have been shown to play a significant role in boosting the immune system during COVID-19 treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation on anxiety in patients with COVID-19. Methods : The research method was a Quasi Experimental pre-test and post-test design with a control group.  The sampling technique was Convenience Sampling with 40 samples which were divided into 20 samples as intervention group and 20 people as control group. Progressive muscle relaxation of 20-30 minutes twice a day for 5 days was only given to the intervention group. A pre-test and post-test using the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) were implemented to measure anxiety. Data was collected and analyzed using Paired Sample  T-test and ANCOVA. Results: showed a statistically significant change in anxiety levels from pre- to post-test for those in the intervention group, but no such change for those in the control group. The significance level for this test is 0.05, so the square root of the mean is 123,578 (F = 115,479) and the standard deviation is 0.000 (p 0.0001). In the intervention group, there is a statistically significant change in sleep quality scores between the pre- and post-test, while in the control group, there is no such change. Its square root is 112.118, its factor is 32.315, and its sign is 0.000 (p 0.05). Conclusions: The conclusion is that anxiety in patients with COVID-19 can be significantly reduced by administering progressive muscle relaxation.

Abstract

Backgroud : Major changes to clinical practice are likely to occur as a result of the introduction of AI into the healthcare industry. Virtual assistants (e.g., AI documentation tools such as Nuance DAX and AI-enabled medical diagnostic tools) are one of the ways artificial intelligence has been applied in our daily lives; one example is its use in the documentation process in the nursing profession. However, there are concerns about false data and possible unintended effects on patients when AI is used in nursing care. In addition, there is only 2% research on AI and its potential benefits for nurses. There is a need for more in-depth research on the use of AI in nursing care. Aims : This study to review the findings and evidence base related to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in nursing care. Methods : The research approach used was a literature review. Articles on the use of AI in nursing care were searched using topics and keywords related to nursing, artificial intelligence, and nursing care. Relevant research was searched using the Boelean formula and filtered for articles published between 2019 and 2024, including PUBMED, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Research involving the creation or verification of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies used in nursing care was considered for inclusion, as were research designs that included experimental or observational methods and quantitative or qualitative data analyses, or a mixture of both. The retrieved articles were screened and discussed according to the research criteria. Results : The results of this study obtained 10 articles that met the criteria and met the requirements (out of a total of 2,490 publications) which were then discussed. The articles discussed the use and application of AI in nursing services for both clinical and academic purposes. Conclutions : There are many potential advantages to implementing AI into nursing services, but they must be carefully considered. To overcome these barriers to the use of AI to improve nursing services, further research is needed. In the future, nurses need to be technologically literate

Abstract

Background: Hypothermia, defined as a decrease in core body temperature below normal levels, is a common perioperative complication in patients undergoing surgical procedures, including cesarean section (CS). Subarachnoid Block (SAB) anesthesia has been identified as a contributing factor due to its thermoregulatory effects. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of SAB regional anesthesia on the occurrence of perioperative hypothermia in patients undergoing cesarean section. Methods: A pre-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design was conducted involving 60 cesarean section patients receiving SAB anesthesia at Al Fuadi General Hospital, Binjai. Body temperature measurements were taken before and after SAB administration. Data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests. Results: Prior to the administration of SAB anesthesia, the majority of patients (91.7%) exhibited normal body temperature, with a mean pretest temperature of 36.8°C (±0.3172). Following SAB administration, all patients (100%) developed hypothermia, with a mean posttest body temperature of 34.9°C (±0.4873), reflecting an average temperature decrease of 1.9°C. Statistical analysis indicated a significant effect of SAB anesthesia on the incidence of perioperative hypothermia (p = 0.000, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The administration of SAB regional anesthesia significantly increases the risk of perioperative hypothermia in cesarean section patients. Preventive strategies in clinical practice should include continuous monitoring of patient body temperature before, during, and after SAB administration to enable early detection and intervention, thereby reducing hypothermia-related complications.

Abstract

Background : Stress is a common psychological issue among older adults, particularly those residing in nursing homes. This condition can negatively affect both physical and mental health. Physical activity-based interventions, such as Square Stepping Exercise (SSE), have been explored as a potential strategy to alleviate stress in the elderly. This study aims to analyze the effect of Square Stepping Exercise on stress levels among older adults living in nursing homes. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of Square Stepping Exercise (SSE) on stress levels in elderly people living in nursing homes.  Method: The method used in this research is an experiment with a pre-test and post-test design. A total of 33 elderly people in nursing homes took part in the SSE program. The stress scale was measured before and after the intervention using a measuring tool, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Result: The results of the analysis show that there is a significant decrease in the stress scale after SSE training, with a p value <0.05  and Δ = 10,7. This may indicate that SSE training is effective in reducing stress levels in the elderly. This reduction in stress is associated with increased physical activity, improved balance, and social interaction during exercise. Conclusion: Square Stepping Exercise can be used as an alternative intervention to reduce stress in elderly people in nursing homes, which has a positive impact on their quality of life.

Abstract

Background: As a major public health concern on a worldwide scale, breast cancer impacts not just the physical health of patients but also their mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, frequently leading to a decline in QoL.  Although both family support and religion are known to have a significant impact on quality of life, the combined impacts of these two characteristics have not been thoroughly studied, especially in the cultural setting of Indonesia. Objective: The purpose of this research is to look at how breast cancer patients in Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia, fare when it comes to family support, religious affiliation, and quality of life. Methods: The 320 women diagnosed with breast cancer at four different Sukabumi hospitals participated in a quantitative cross-sectional study that took place in 2020 and 2021.  To gather data, researchers used validated instruments such as the EORTC QLQ-C30 for quality of life, the Family Support Scale for family support, and the Duke University Religion Index (DUREL) for religiosity.  The associations between variables were examined using descriptive and inferential methods, including multiple regression. Results: The mean scores for family support, religiosity, and QoL were 12.51 (SD = 2.161), 22.89 (SD = 3.554), and 44.04 (SD = 8.556), respectively. Simple regression analysis revealed significant positive relationships between family support (B = 2.718, p < 0.001, R² = 47.1%) and religiosity (B = 1.664, p < 0.001, R² = 47.8%) with QoL. Multiple regression analysis indicated that family support and religiosity jointly explained 57.2% of the variance in QoL (p < 0.001). Quality of life (QoL), family support (12.51; SD= 2.161), and religion (22.89; SD= 3.554) had respective mean ratings of 44.04 (SD= 8.556).  The results of the simple regression analysis showed that religiosity (B = 1.664, p < 0.001, R² = 47.8%) and family support (B = 2.718, p < 0.001) were significantly positively correlated with quality of life (QoL).  According to multiple regression analysis, 57.2% of the variation in quality of life (QoL) was explained by both family support and religion (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Religion and the support of family members are important factors in determining quality of life for breast cancer patients.  Their combined impact highlights the significance of care options that incorporate spiritual and familial support.  These results give light on how to improve the quality of life and holistic treatment for breast cancer patients in Indonesia by creating interventions that are culturally specific.

Abstract

Background: Maternal morbidity and mortality remain significant public health challenges in Indonesia. Complications such as labor pain, sleep disturbances, and fetal malposition continue to affect maternal outcomes. Complementary therapies, including maternity gymnastics and effleurage massage, have emerged as potential strategies to enhance maternal comfort and promote efficient labor. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of integrating maternity gymnastics and effleurage massage into midwifery care on improving maternal sleep quality, fetal descent, and labor outcomes. Methods: A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. Forty-two pregnant women between 32 and 36 weeks gestation were recruited consecutively from a public health center in West Java, Indonesia. Participants engaged in weekly maternity gymnastics sessions and received effleurage massage during the first stage of labor. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and labor outcomes were recorded using a validated checklist. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and descriptive statistics. Results: There was a significant improvement in sleep quality following the intervention, with the mean PSQI score decreasing from 8.6 ± 2.1 to 5.2 ± 1.8 (p < 0.001). The mean duration of the first stage of labor was 4.3 ± 1.1 hours. A high proportion of participants achieved spontaneous vaginal delivery (90.5%), and early fetal head engagement at admission was observed in 83.3% of cases. Labor pain intensity was moderate, with a mean Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score of 5.7 ± 1.4. Conclusion: Integrating maternity gymnastics and effleurage massage into midwifery care effectively improved maternal sleep quality, facilitated fetal engagement, and promoted shorter labor duration. These findings support the incorporation of complementary therapies into routine antenatal and intrapartum care to enhance maternal comfort and optimize labor outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Newborns' nutrition and development depend on breast milk, but many moms don't produce enough, which is bad for their babies' health and development.  One non-pharmacological approach that has been shown to improve milk ejection is oxytocin massage.  Few research have investigated its combined impact on low-resource settings and newborn weight increase, despite indications of its usefulness. Objective: Specifically, we want to know how well oxytocin massage treatment works as a supplement to increase milk supply and boost baby weight gain. Methods: A quasi-experimental research was carried out in Sukabumi, West Java, with 70 postpartum moms and their infants aged 0-3 months. The study used a pre-test and post-test control group design.  Two groups were established: one that received regular postpartum care and another that received oxytocin massage daily for seven days.  We assessed breast milk supply and baby weight before and after the intervention.  The data was examined by means of multivariate regression analysis, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests. Results: In comparison to the control group, the intervention group demonstrated a notable rise in both baby body weight (mean difference: 0.5 kg, p = 0.001) and breast milk production (mean difference: 240 mL/day, p < 0.001).  Treatment with oxytocin massage continued to be associated with better results even after controlling for factors such as mother age, parity, and level of education. Conclusion: Boosting breast milk supply and promoting newborn weight growth are both achieved with complementary oxytocin massage treatment.  This intervention provides a practical and affordable way to enhance the health of newborns and the success of breastfeeding, especially in areas with limited resources.  The advantages over the long run and its applicability to more diverse groups should be the focus of future research
