Abstract

Contemporary global challenges such as relativism, the fragmentation of meaning, and the increasing escalation of religion-related conflicts demonstrate the urgency of strengthening interfaith dialogue as a means of fostering social harmony, tolerance, and peace within society. In this context, this study analyzes Hamka’s interpretation of Qur’anic verses in Tafsir al-Azhar to explore how Islamic theological principles can guide constructive interreligious relations. Using a qualitative philosophical approach and thematic analysis of verses pertaining to interfaith relations, this research systematically identifies the key concepts emphasized by Hamka. The study finds that Hamka affirms three fundamental foundations of interreligious interaction: (a) the principle of universal human dignity, (b) justice and ethical responsibility toward others, and (c) guidance for peaceful coexistence rooted in Qur’anic moral values. The study also finds that Hamka underscores these principles as the basis for interreligious relations. Conceptually, this research contributes to the development of Islamic philosophy of religion; practically, it offers a normative framework to support tolerance, coexistence, and peace among diverse religious communities amid contemporary global challenges.

Abstract

In post-Reform Indonesia (1998–present), social challenges such as radicalism, moral disorientation, and identity fragmentation demand a religious approach integrating spirituality with social realities. This study revisits the ethical Sufism (tasawuf akhlaki) of K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari (1871–1947), founder of Nahdlatul Ulama and Pesantren Tebuireng, examining its contemporary relevance for Islamic social activism in Indonesia. Specifically, it analyzes how his Sufi ethics—rooted in sincerity (ikhlas), self-purification (tazkiyah al-nafs), moral conduct (adab), and spiritual struggle (mujahadah) are reappropriated by NU-affiliated organizations and pesantren-based movements addressing modern societal issues. Employing a qualitative historical-hermeneutic method, data were collected through close reading of Hasyim Asy'ari's original works (Adab al-'Alim wa al-Muta'allim, Risalah Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah), secondary sources, and academic journals documenting NU social initiatives (2000–2024). Findings reveal that his ethical Sufism functions as a moral framework cultivating social awareness and civic engagement, institutionalized through pesantren education and manifested in grassroots movements addressing religious pluralism, deradicalization, and community empowerment. This research contributes to recontextualizing Sufism in modern civic ethics by demonstrating how classical Islamic spirituality operates as a framework for contemporary social activism, bridging religious scholarship on tasawuf and sociological studies of Islamic movements. The study suggests further comparative research between pesantren-based moral education and global character formation models, plus empirical investigation into Sufi ethics' measurable impacts on community resilience.

Abstract

The proliferation of digital preaching raises concerns about the marginalization of contemplative religious traditions. This study addresses the research gap in analyses of how classical sufistic preaching is rearticulated for and through digital media. The study examines the da’wah delivered by KH. Moh. Zuhri Zaini during the 7th Ngaji Tasawuf session (2025) at Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School, a program also broadcast live on the pesantren’s YouTube channel. The purpose is to identify and classify the dominant theological, moral, and spiritual themes and to interpret their communicative functions in a mediated setting. Using qualitative content analysis, the study applies inductive coding and thematic categorization to the full transcript, triangulated with video recordings and relevant literature. Results show four interrelated thematic clusters; theological (tauhid and existential awareness), moral (niyyah, sincerity, and ethical prioritization), spiritual (dhikr, tafakkur, tazkiyah), and social (digital conduct and communal responsibility) which together constitute a coherent model of Sufistic preaching adapted to online formats. The paper proposes a preliminary framework of “digital Sufistic communication” that conceptualizes how pesantren ritual discourse is remediated for participatory digital publics. Implications include suggestions for (a) designing digital preaching frameworks that preserve contemplative depth, (b) pesantren pedagogy responsive to mediated audiences, and (c) future empirical testing of the proposed framework across other pesantren livestreams.

Abstract

This study analyzes the implementation and effectiveness of risk mitigation strategies in Sharia Home Ownership Loan (KPR) financing using the 5C principles (Character, Capacity, Capital, Collateral, Condition) and sharia-compliant restructuring mechanisms to reduce Non-Performing Financing (NPF) at Bank BTN Syariah Diponegoro Surabaya. The issue is critical because the national NPF ratio for sharia mortgages has shown fluctuations in recent years, posing threats to portfolio quality and institutional stability. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three key informants directly involved in consumer financing analysis, collection, and documentation, complemented by secondary data from internal bank reports and regulatory sources. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation, technical triangulation, and member checking. The findings show that the rigorous application of the 5C principles helped prevent high-risk applicants from entering the financing portfolio, with 23% of applications rejected during 2024–2025 due to 5C deficiencies. Meanwhile, restructuring measures—through rescheduling, reconditioning, and contract adjustments—helped stabilize debtor repayment abilities and contributed to a decline in potential NPF escalation. Internal branch records indicate that these combined mitigation strategies helped maintain NPF at a controlled level despite wider national fluctuations. This study contributes to the literature by integrating pre-disbursement (5C) and post-disbursement (restructuring) mitigation frameworks within sharia mortgage financing, addressing a gap in existing studies that often examine these mechanisms separately. Practically, the results provide guidance for Islamic banks in strengthening responsive and sharia-compliant risk management systems.

Abstract

This study analyzes the epistemological intersection between Sufism and Hadith Science through an in-depth examination of the work of Abū ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, al-Arbaʿūn fī al-Taṣawwuf. Using a historical-philological method, the research reveals the mechanism of the "methodological dialogue" initiated by al-Sulamī, which seeks to reconcile the authority of hadith transmission (naql) with the spiritual epistemology of Sufism (kashf). Empirical philological findings indicate that the majority of hadiths in this collection are of weak (ḍaʿīf) or even fabricated (mawḍūʿ) status, yet doctrinally, al-Sulamī strategically employs them to construct a Sufi ethical-spiritual foundation centered on the concepts of zuhud, maḥabbah, and maʿrifah. This study clearly distinguishes between the findings of problematic sanad authenticity and al-Sulamī's interpretative claims that validate hadith through the alignment of meaning (ṣiḥḥat al-maʿnā) and spiritual considerations. The resulting epistemological insight demonstrates that this work is not merely a harmonious reconciliation, but rather a negotiation arena reflecting the creative tension between the historical-textual authority of the muhaddithūn and the inner experiential authority of the Sufis within the medieval Islamic intellectual tradition.

Abstract

This study examines the regulation of child custody after divorce in Indonesia, focusing on the legal dynamics arising from the general provisions of Article 105 letter (a) of the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) which tends to grant custody to the mother, imagining it as the best interest of the child. The problem in this study is how legal provisions in Indonesia regulate the granting of custody to the father after divorce, and the judge's legal considerations in the Gresik Religious Court Decision Number 0461/Pdt.G/2020/PA.Gs consider the best interests of the child. This study uses a Normative Juridical research type with a regulatory, case, and conceptual approach. The data analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative. This shows that custody of the three children, including those who are not yet mumayyiz, is given to the father because the mother is proven to have committed verbal and physical violence. The judge specifically Article 105 letter (a) of the KHI and adheres to Article 4 of Law No. 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection. This decision is also based on the father's capabilities in psychological, moral, religious, and economic aspects. This study aims to analyze the legal basis and judicial reasoning for granting custody to fathers post-divorce in Indonesia, using a normative juridical method with statutory and case approaches. The findings reveal that the court prioritized the child’s holistic welfare over maternal presumption under Article 105(a) KHI. The study contributes to strengthening the interpretation of child protection law consistent with the principle of the best interests of the child.

Abstract

This study analyses the conceptual genealogy of Malay Islam and Nusantara Islam and examines the similarities and differences between them in contemporary scientific discourse. Although the two terms are often used interchangeably in academic and public discourse, systematic studies comparing their historical foundations, epistemic actors, and conceptualisation processes are still limited. This gap is the main focus of this study. This study uses a library method with a historical-critical approach and conceptual analysis, which is operationalised through discourse tracing of historical and academic sources, as well as conceptual mapping of the construction of meaning of the two terms. The research data includes classical Malay manuscripts, works of Islamic philology and historiography, religious anthropology literature, and recent scientific publications in Islamic and Southeast Asian studies. The results of the analysis show that Malay Islam is rooted in a pre-modern Islamisation process that was institutionalised through a network of scholars, kingdoms, and classical literacy traditions, while Islam Nusantara is a modern discursive construction that has developed in an academic and religious organisational context since the early 21st century. This study identifies three main findings: similarities between the two in their accommodative and moderate orientation towards Islam; differences in their historical basis, cultural space, and discourse-forming actors; and the strategic role of both in formulating a contextual Islamic paradigm. Theoretically, this research contributes to strengthening the study of Islamic epistemology and Southeast Asian studies by offering a more precise comparative framework for understanding local Islam as a historical and discursive construct.
