Abstract

This article discusses Sayyid Qutb's views on materialism, especially in the context of his interpretation of Surah Ali Imran, verse 14. This verse mentions human love for the world, including wealth, women, children, and other worldly pleasures. The method used in this article is a qualitative approach with a literature review. For the analytical approach, the article employs a tahlili (analytical) method, which allows the author to explore a verse in-depth. Through this study, the article aims to reveal how Qutb's *Tafsir Fi Zhilalil Qur'an* provides relevant insights into the dangers of materialism in modern life and how Muslims should balance their worldly life with the hereafter. The research findings show that in his tafsir, Sayyid Qutb criticizes excessive love for the world as a form of materialism that can divert Muslims from their higher purpose in life, which is to seek Allah’s pleasure and the happiness of the hereafter. Qutb emphasizes the importance of awareness that love for the world must remain within reasonable limits so that it does not hinder one's focus on spiritual values and righteous deeds.

Abstract

IntroductionIndigenous profit-sharing arrangements rooted in Islamic ethics remain understudied, despite their prominence in Southeast Asian enterprises. The Minangkabau Mato system, practised in Padang restaurants, melds Qurʾānic ideals of justice with kin-based solidarity and continuous spiritual self-monitoring (murāqabah). Understanding whether such a relational model can thrive in competitive urban markets is critical for both cultural preservation and Islamic economic theory.ObjectivesThis study aims to (1) document in detail how Mato is implemented in a diaspora restaurant setting, (2) assess its economic and motivational effects relative to formal mudharabah contracts, and (3) evaluate the role of murāqabah as an endogenous governance mechanism.MethodAdopting an ethnographic design, the researcher spent twenty-four weeks immersed in a medium-sized Padang restaurant in Palembang. Data comprised participant observation during daily operations, twenty-three semi-structured interviews covering all functional roles, and an analysis of daily balance sheets and archival photographs. Transcripts and field notes were coded inductively and deductively in NVivo, yielding four integrative themes: Islamic-ethical foundations, sociocultural integration, worker perceptions, and cultural-preservation dynamics.ResultsTransparent daily splits and flexible profit ratios foster high psychological ownership, intrinsic motivation, and negligible staff turnover. The employees cited murāqabah as a powerful internal control that reduced opportunism and reinforced meticulous bookkeeping. During a nine-percent spike in commodity costs, consensual ratio adjustments prevented wage arrears—an agility unattainable under fixed-ratio mudharabah schemes. Branding Mato as “Profit-Sharing the Minangkabau Way” simultaneously enhanced customer loyalty and safeguarded cultural identity.ImplicationsThe findings position Mato as a viable template for community-based Islamic finance and highlight the policy need for legal pluralism that legitimizes indigenous models without eroding their relational strengths. Managers seeking value-aligned incentives may replicate daily open-table reconciliations, ratio elasticity, and devotional briefings to embed trust and resilience.Originality/NoveltyThis study provides the first in-depth ethnographic evidence of Mato in an urban service enterprise, demonstrating how murāqabah and flexible sharing ratios translate Islamic moral philosophy into day-to-day business sustainability, while advancing heritage-based competitive advantage.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyses the conceptual genealogy of Malay Islam and Nusantara Islam and examines the similarities and differences between them in contemporary scientific discourse. Although the two terms are often used interchangeably in academic and public discourse, systematic studies comparing their historical foundations, epistemic actors, and conceptualisation processes are still limited. This gap is the main focus of this study. This study uses a library method with a historical-critical approach and conceptual analysis, which is operationalised through discourse tracing of historical and academic sources, as well as conceptual mapping of the construction of meaning of the two terms. The research data includes classical Malay manuscripts, works of Islamic philology and historiography, religious anthropology literature, and recent scientific publications in Islamic and Southeast Asian studies. The results of the analysis show that Malay Islam is rooted in a pre-modern Islamisation process that was institutionalised through a network of scholars, kingdoms, and classical literacy traditions, while Islam Nusantara is a modern discursive construction that has developed in an academic and religious organisational context since the early 21st century. This study identifies three main findings: similarities between the two in their accommodative and moderate orientation towards Islam; differences in their historical basis, cultural space, and discourse-forming actors; and the strategic role of both in formulating a contextual Islamic paradigm. Theoretically, this research contributes to strengthening the study of Islamic epistemology and Southeast Asian studies by offering a more precise comparative framework for understanding local Islam as a historical and discursive construct.
