Abstract

The history of Air Majapahit is one of the events of the arrival of Princess Majapahit in Negeri Ema which has been told orally from generation to generation. The history of Majapahit Water can be proven true by the existence of Majapahit kingdom relics in the form of heirloom spears, Gamelan, Betel places and Majapahit springs which are still well preserved in Negeri Ema. Based on this phenomenon, it was then used as a nonmusical concept to work on a musical composition. The composition of Traces of Majapahit is a narrative program musical work which contains elements of the history of Air Majapahit, which was created in the form of varied music and using western instruments. The process of creating the musical composition Traces of Majapahit went through several stages, namely (1) exploration of literature regarding musical disciplines and observation of Majapahit water history; (2) processing the relationship between musical elements and nonmusical concepts as a basis for the construction of musical compositions; (3) cultivating musical elements into variations using the main theme development procedure from Leon Stein’s theory; (4) presentation of the work in orchestra format. This work contains cultural value in the almost forgotten relationship between the Majapahit kingdom and Negeri Ema, so that through this work it is hoped that the history of Air Majapahit will be preserved.

Abstract

Jazz Fusion music is one of the music styles currently developing in Bali. The characteristics of Jazz Fusion include combining two musical concept approaches, between local music concepts (Balinese tradisi) and foreign music (western), which results in a different Jazz musical identity. One musical work, Sanghyang Legong, describes the situation of Balinese Jazz Fusion music. Sanghyang Legong musical work results from a collaboration between famous Indonesian jazz musician Indra Lesmana and Balinese gamelan musicians I Made Subandi (alm.) and I Wayan Sudiarsa. This work uses Gending Sanghyang as a source of inspiration developed through a jazz music aesthetic approach. This composition received great appreciation from the music community inside and outside Bali. After being mass-produced in 2017, Sanghyang Legong attracted over 36,000 monthly views on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music. This article aims to educate the reader on the composer’s creative process, the resultant musical form, and the work’s significance. The formulation of the problem includes (1) the process of creation, (2) musical form, and (3) implications of Sanghyang Legong composition. The research method uses a qualitative design with a descriptive approach to musicology. Data collection through documentation and interviews. Analysis through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The elaboration of instruments and playing techniques of Gamelan Singapraga, Suling (Balinese Flute), and Balinese Gending Vocal Style showed the concept of Jazz Fusion music in the composition of Sanghyang Legong. The song has five parts: Solo, Intro, Verse, Chorus, and Interlude. This work has an impactful implication for the sustainability of tourism and Bali’s creative economy.

Abstract

The existence of traditional music in Mamanda Kutai theater art remains well-preserved by the Mamanda Panji Berseri group, as demonstrated by the consistent core patterns of piul and babon, as well as the relatively unchanged use of accompanying instruments. This preservation is particularly noteworthy given the significant developments observed in most other groups. This qualitative study aims to examine how the traditional Mamanda music ecosystem is systematically maintained by the Mamanda Panji Berseri group. The research employs a combination of desk and field methods, grounded in an ethnomusicological perspective. The findings indicate that various interrelated components within the ecosystem contribute to its sustainability, including learning systems, musicians and communities, contextual and structural frameworks, regulatory support and infrastructure, and the music industry. Furthermore, the study underscores that the role of the traditional Mamanda Kutai musical accompaniment ecosystem within the Mamanda Panji Berseri group still requires further optimization to enhance its long-term sustainability and broader impact.

Abstract

Modernization brings significant changes in various aspects of community life, including social, economic, political, and cultural, through the presence of technology. The city of Sibolga on the West Coast of North Sumatra is a multi-ethnic area, inhabited by Minang, Nias, Chinese, Javanese, and Batak Toba groups, with Batak Toba as one of the largest sub-ethnic groups. As times change, the Batak Toba community in Sibolga has also experienced the impact of modernization, especially in the implementation of the traditional saur matua ceremony. The modernization process encourages adjustments in the procedures of the ceremony to remain relevant to people's current lives. Some traditional elements are still maintained, but there are changes, especially in the aspect of traditional music which is now adapted to current needs and tastes. This study uses a qualitative ethnographic method to explore socio-cultural dynamics, especially the traditional music practices of the Batak Toba in the saur matua ceremony in Sibolga. The results of the research show that the change in music in this ceremony is influenced by the entry of Christian values, so that the community seeks to integrate religious teachings with tradition. The music used is now mixed, combining Western instruments with Batak musical instruments, and featuring a repertoire of Batak Toba instrumental music with modern compositions such as Palti Raja. This transformation has generated various community reactions, both support and criticism, which reflect the dynamics between the preservation of tradition and adaptation to the times.

Abstract

The research entitled "Creativity and Niniek's Role in Utilizing Used Goods into Music in Surakarta" is based on the phenomenon of the emergence of sounds from used goods. Innovation in engineering used goods and arrangement techniques carried out by Niniek are interesting aspects to be studied further. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, with Niniek S.M Daryonagoro as the main subject. To answer the formulation of the problem, this study utilizes Rhodes 4P creativity theory (person, process, press, and product) and the concept of individual roles according to Setyadi. The final stage after going through the analysis found several conclusions. Niniek's background growing up in an art environment played an important role in encouraging her creativity in developing music based on used goods. Niniek's consistency and creativity are reflected in the historical journey of the presence of used goods music. In addition, Niniek's role has been proven to be able to increase the interest of students and the Surakarta community in music, as well as providing indirect education regarding the use of used goods as a music medium through the performances held.
