Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the professional competencies of early childhood educators, particularly in artistic skills, to support the overall improvement of human resources in education. Targeting teachers at TK Al Islam 5 Grobagan, the initiative provides structured training focused on the development of classroom decorative elements using the ecoprint technique. The program responds to existing challenges such as limited knowledge, lack of exposure to ecoprint methods, and insufficient tools and materials. Over a six-month period, participants are trained to create functional and aesthetic items including curtains and table coverings made from primisima and blacu fabrics, as well as wall ornaments crafted from pinewood boards and traditional fans. The ecoprint technique is selected for its creative potential, low production cost, and simplicity, making it suitable for grassroots implementation. Through practical instruction and guided application, teachers are expected to enhance their artistic capacities, integrate creative practices into their teaching methods, and contribute to sustainable, culturally relevant classroom environments. Furthermore, the program fosters design skills that can be applied beyond the educational setting, offering pathways for creative entrepreneurship rooted in local knowledge and materials.

Abstract

One of the interventions to improve the quality of basic education that can be carried out by higher education is through the implementation of Community Service (PKM) programs. PKM is ISI Surakarta's which focuses on art for the community as an alternative solution to the problems faced by the community. The problem faced is a change in the curriculum which requires teachers to innovate in developing learning media. Six State Elementary Schools in Andong District are the targets of this service activity. All of them have a mission to make learning fun, one of which is through singing activities. Teaching media in audio-visual format has been proven to be able to increase students' learning motivation, but the limited abilities of teachers are an obstacle to innovation. Therefore, training in the production of audio-visual teaching media is very necessary considering that students' scientific literacy competency levels need to be increased.

Abstract

Persons with disabilities, especially those with hearing impairments, often face significant challenges in accessing and enjoying traditional wayang kulit performances. This community service program seeks to address this issue by introducing innovations in the form of specially designed wayang puppets and the integration of speech balloons (balon kata) to make performances more accessible and engaging for deaf audiences. The aim of this initiative is to empower individuals with hearing disabilities through puppetry arts by creating visually intuitive puppets and providing visual dialogue aids that support their understanding of the narrative and character interactions. The method employed involves a structured design facilitation process that includes problem identification, idea formulation, experimentation, selection, implementation, and presentation. The involvement of community partners such as Padepokan Seni Sarotama is a key component of the program's success. The results show that the use of speech balloons in conjunction with puppet design has significantly improved the level of appreciation, comprehension, and engagement of deaf participants during wayang performances. Participants expressed a stronger emotional connection to the performance and reported increased confidence and self-esteem. This program demonstrates that artistic innovation in traditional puppetry can serve as an effective medium for inclusion and empowerment of individuals with special needs. Additionally, the project contributes to the preservation and revitalization of wayang culture among younger generations, including those with disabilities.

Abstract

The village of Serenan hosts over 200 small-scale household furniture businesses, producing various wooden furniture items such as tables, chairs, cabinets, wall decorations, and more. In the past, the village thrived and was known as a renowned wood carving center. However, its prominence has gradually declined. The current generation of young wood craftsmen in Serenan focuses primarily on simple carving designs, which are easier to produce. This limited approach, combined with increasing competition from larger furniture industries, has hindered their growth. Furthermore, their conventional sales methods contribute to a downward trend in income. Today, Serenan’s young wood craftsmen recognize the importance of adding “value” to their wooden products by incorporating high-aesthetic wood carving elements. However, they face significant challenges due to limited carving skills, while the village’s master carvers are no longer physically able to provide comprehensive training due to their advanced age. Therefore, this Community Empowerment Program (PKM) is designed to provide insights and training in wood carving, covering the entire process from design and carving to finishing. In addition, online marketing training through social media is offered to help them overcome the low sales volume caused by a narrow target market, resulting from conventional sales practices.

Abstract

The Art-related Community Service Program at the kindergarten of Raudhatul Athfal At-Taqwa (RA At-Taqwa) aims to foster creativity in artwork creation and improve the skills and competencies of RA teachers in utilizing waste as materials for making Educational Teaching Aids/Games (APE). This approach carries the concept of safety for children, which is environmentally friendly, sourced from materials that are easily obtained from the surrounding environment, with low manufacturing costs, and the application of the 4R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace). The implementation method includes training, mentoring, and demonstrations to RA At-Taqwa teachers. The implementation strategy goes through Participatory Action Research (PAR) emphasizing empowerment, where teachers are encouraged to increase their creativity in utilizing used materials as an alternative for making APE. This program is also expected to have a positive impact on the school environment by reducing the amount of waste produced and increasing awareness of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability. The problem faced by partners is the lack of utilization of children's creative potential in the learning process. The limited use of APE has not optimally developed children's creative potential.  This shows that there is still a gap between the potential of children's creativity and the use of available resources in learning. Thus, training and mentoring on the use of used goods is one solution as a means to stimulate and develop children's creativity in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Girilayu Batik as one of the leading creative industries in Karanganyar Regency has currently experienced quite rapid progress. Several studies and community service activities in an effort to increase product capacity and quality have been carried out, but along with the increasingly tight competition in the fashion market, product diversification is still needed to be adjusted to the functions and trends that are currently developing. The motifs and functions of batik products in Girilayu are considered to need development in order to reach the market from a different side. This community service activity is an effort to open up wider batik market opportunities. The purpose of this activity is so that creative batik industry players in the Giriarum Batik Group, Girilayu Village, are able to create batik motifs for fashion and home décor which are currently starting to be popular. The method used to achieve this goal is in the form of training and mentoring in exploring creative ideas and creating batik motifs that are in accordance with the tastes of potential consumers. Training and mentoring for batik product diversification which will be carried out supported by the technical skills already possessed by batik craftsmen in the Giriarum Batik Group will be able to create products that are in demand by consumers. Fashion products other than clothes and fabrics as well as home décor products will differentiate batik competitors, so that market opportunities are wide open.

Abstract

This study explores the design of edible art inspired by the aesthetic tradition of Mooi Indie painting and the sensory qualities of Indonesian spices through a collaborative community engagement project with the MSME partner, Saeca. Integrating visual art and molecular gastronomy, the project aims to produce intermedia artworks that are both culturally resonant and experientially rich. Employing the Design Thinking framework—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test—the research applies a qualitative approach to analyze the symbolic, material, and sensory characteristics of traditional Indonesian spices within the context of art history. The resulting edible artworks reinterpret the idyllic and romanticized themes of Mooi Indie while showcasing the complexity and cultural significance of indigenous spices. These creations offer a novel intersection between food and fine art, functioning as sensory-based cultural expressions that respond to contemporary aesthetic and market needs. The findings highlight the potential of edible art as a medium for cultural storytelling, interdisciplinary innovation, and the preservation of local heritage through multisensory experience design.
