Abstract

Listening comprehension should emphasize the process, students focus during learning to build their knowledge through a series of speakers so that learning becomes meaningful to students. Listening skills can be classified into two parts, basic skills and integrated skills. In principle, basic skills and integrated skills have in common in terms of formulating problems, collecting data and proposing problem solving solutions. Metacognitive refers to higher-order thinking that involves active control in the cognitive process of learning in solving a problem. Activities such as analyzing English speakers, increasing understanding, and evaluating listening comprehension are natural metacognitive. Metacognitive is the ability to think in which the object of thinking is the thought process that occurs in yourself. In the context of learning, students know how to learn, know their abilities and learning modalities, and know the best learning strategies for effective learning. Metacognitive as a form of ability to look at oneself so that what he does can be controlled optimally. Students with metacognitive knowledge are aware of the advantages and limitations of learning. This means that when students know their mistakes, they realize to admit that they are wrong, and try to correct it. For this reason, pre-service teachers need to try to train students to have metacognitive abilities and bring them up so that they can ultimately improve their listening comprehension. Before that, it is necessary to know how pre-service teachers 'perceptions of metacognitive strategies are to improve students' abilities in lisetening comperhension. This article will focus on the understanding and perceptions of pre-service teachers of metacognitive strategies. This study will examine seven respondents from 5k semester students of English Language Education Program at Universitas Ibn Khaldun. Research conducted using quantitative and qualitative, by giving questionnaires and conducting interviews which then proceed to the analysis of the data. The results are intended that the majority of pre-service teachers still do not fully understand metacognitive strategies.

Abstract

Although much research on the use of photovoice for learning purposes in a higher education context has been well-documented for decades, literature rarely indicate that photovoice has been used as a learning tool to develop intercultural communicative competence particularly in an informal learning environment. To fill this void, this paper reports how photovoice-mediated collaborative-reflection tasks help university students engaged in intercultural learning and develop their intercultural communicative competence. This narrative case study revealed that intercultural communicative competence was detected between the groups (A & B): attitude of curiosity and openness, knowledge of self and other, skills of interpreting and relating, skills of discovery and interaction, and critical cultural awareness. However, critical cultural awareness and attitude of curiosity and openness appeared frequently within both groups. The implication of this study informs the need for applying photovoice-based collaborative reflection in order to develop students’ intercultural communicative competence in informal learning environment.

Thus, this current research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest and nonrandomized control group design. Students’ critical thinking ability was measured by a writing test in the form of argumentative essay test. The data analysis in this research employed analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). This research revealed that Toulmin's model of argumentation within “Claim and Support” strategy was ineffective to improve students' critical thinking in their argumentative essay.

Abstract

This study is primarily aimed to find out the methods used in translating metaphor in a novel entitled “Illegitimate Tycoon” by Janette Kenny and the translation entitled “Dihantui Masa Lalu”. The writer applied descriptive qualitative research design in conducting this study. It is a design which focuses on the natural characteristics of data, in which the writer described and elaborated the findings of the study. The writer applied Newmark’s theory of methods of translation (word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation) in analyzing the data. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that from 207 data of metaphor clauses/phrases, the translator used 5 methods from 8 methods of translation. Free translation was used 159 times (76,81%), Literal Translation was used 39 times (18,84%), Semantic Translation was used 6 times (2,91%), Idiomatic Translation was used 2 times (0,96%), and Adaptation was used 1 times (0,48%). It means that mostly the translator used free translation in translating metaphor. The most dominant method used in translating metaphor in a novel “Illegitimate Tycoon” by Janette Kenny is Free Translation.
