Abstract

This study aimed to find primary school EFL perception in Loei on E-learning during the Covid-19 outbreak. This study is using descriptive quantitative design using questionnaire as the instrument and involving 125 primary school EFL from 6 different districts in Loei, Thailand. To find valid answer, Gutmann scale has been applied in this study consisting of 4 aspects namely interactivity, independency, accessibility and enrichment. The results show that the mean score is 8.34 (min score: 3 & max score: 12) and the standard deviation is 2.152. Thus, it can be said that EFL perceptions in Loei, Thailand primary school on E-learning implementation is fairly good. The findings of this study are to assist English teachers making it possible to design more effective E-learning implementation during the outbreak mainly for EFL in rural areas.

Abstract

This research investigated combining of Herringbone technique with Think Pair Share (TPS) strategy in reading comprehension. The design of this research was quasi-experimental with non-equivalent groups pretest-posttest. Two groups were used in the study; the experimental and control groups were given different treatments. The researcher taught the experimental group using the Herringbone technique with the TPS strategy, while the researcher taught the control group using the conventional method. The population of this study was the seventh grade of Junior High School in Bangkalan. The data were obtained by administering the reading test to two intact groups. The research was started by giving pre-tests, treatments, and post-tests to experimental and control groups. The data of the test were analyzed by using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results indicated that combining of herringbone technique with the TPS strategy was effective than the conventional technique. However, when examined in terms of post-test, both showed a statistically significant difference in reading comprehension. Based on the findings of this research, combining herringbone with think pair share appeared to be a plausible alternative for teaching English reading comprehension to the seventh-year students of Junior High School in Bangkalan.

Abstract

AbstractA podcast is an audio file that is possible to download from the internet and can be defined as online audio blogging. The purpose of this study was to find information about the use of podcasts as a strategy to improve EFL students’ listening skill. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach where the collected data will be described in a narrative. As for the data sources in this study were obtained by analyzing and interviewing. The results of using podcasts as a strategy to improve EFL students’ listening skill are shown effectiveness and can help improve their listening skills.Keyword: Listening skill, podcast, EFL students AbstrakPodcast adalah file audio yang dapat diunduh dari internet dan dapat didefinisikan sebagai blog audio online. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan informasi tentang penggunaan podcast sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mendengarkan peserta didik EFL. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dimana data yang terkumpul akan dideskripsikan secara naratif. Adapun sumber data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dengan cara analisis dan wawancara. Hasil penggunaan podcast sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan keterampilan mendengarkan peserta didik EFL menunjukkan efektivitas dan dapat membantu meningkatkan keterampilan mendengarkan mereka.Kata kunci: Kemampuan mendengarkan, podcast, peserta didik EFL

Abstract

The research aims to find out the strategies used by teachers in teaching speaking to students in secondary school and teachers’ perception about the method. This study involved ten English teachers at several secondary schools in North Sumatra. To collect the data, researchers use qualitative descriptive methods by distributed questionnaires as research instruments using the google form platform. This research was conducted to find and identify the teachers’ strategies in teaching speaking. Research indicates that the strategies used by the English teacher were information gap, communicative language by real life situation, brain storming, picture storming, discussion, story-telling, role-play, daily integration in learning process, speech and games. Whereas the teacher's response to the strategy produces a positive attitude because their perception answers that the strategy they used was satisfying and effective to help students to improve their speaking skills. The results of the study also reveal that the teachers’ strategies are essential to improving students' willingness to study at school. Thus the teacher strategy is the key to success in teaching. The results of this study provide a full description of teaching practice, and the assessment employed by the teacher. From this research, it is suggested that teachers use speaking teaching strategies by paying attention to steps to perform the method.

Abstract

This  research  aims  to  find  out  the  types  of  illocutionary  acts  are performed in second semester students (speaking in professional context subject) at UNDIKMA in teaching and learning process. This research applied descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection techniques in this study were the free of charge listening technique and note taking technique. The data analysis technique in this study used the pragmatic equivalent method. Based on the data analysis the conclusion can be drawn is the types of illocutionary acts found are assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive.

Abstract

Directorate General of Higher Education Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia issued a decree named SK Dirjen Number 43 regarding the implementation of the personality development course in higher education. The vision of teaching those courses, including teaching Indonesian language, is to provide source of values and guidelines in the development and implementation of study programs to lead students to establish their personality as Indonesian people. The study brings comprehensions about students acceptance of teaching the course and be useful for study programs that offers ELE. The programs can use the findings as a reference how they have to design their curriculum to meet students needs as well as in line with the government regulations. this study applied a phenomenology under the qualitative approach. Based on the result of the data analysis to capture students of English Language Education (ELE) perceive the teaching of Bahasa Indonesia course at the university level, the researchers put into two major themes. The first theme is students positive perceptions Bahasa Indonesia course, while the last is students negative perception towards similar course.

Abstract

Teachers doing action research has been recommended as a powerful and transformative model for teacher professional development but remains trivial among the population of teachers worldwide, including those who teach English as a foreign language (EFL). The present study investigates EFL teachers’ level of engagement with and in Teacher Action Research (TAR), as well as their motives for the engagement. Employing a quantitative approach with a survey as the design, a questionnaire was distributed to EFL teachers teaching at secondary school to collect data. Descriptive statistics were run to analyze the data. The results showed that EFL teachers’ engagement with TAR was high, while their engagement in TAR was moderate. Thus, encouraging EFL Teachers to conduct TAR will consequently get them used to continuously make reflections on what they did in their classroom in which better teaching-learning quality can be achieved. Besides, the policy makers should provide some fundamental supports to encourage the teachers making the research engagement.

Abstract

Translating literary works, especially novels, causes multiple challenges for translators, including utterances consisting of some types of speech acts such directives, assertives, expressives, commissives and declaratives using proper translation techniques in accordance with their contexts. This study was especially intended to identify and analyse the types of speech acts,. It is a translation research: a case study with descriptive qualitative method on the basis of the documents of the ST and TT. The case study was applied to a novel Ghost Fleet: A Novel of  The Next World. The data were obtained using document analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The data were analyzed one by one using Spradley‟s four procedures.The results showed  that there are four types of speech acts found in the novel namely assertive, directive, expressive and comissive. The speech acts were translated using established equivalence. variation, pure borrowing, explicitation, modulation, implicitation, particularization, compensation, discursive creation, reduction, literal translation, trans-rank-shift, transposition, addition and generalization. The translation quality consisting of accuracy, acceptability and readability is very excellent.  This research revealed that in the war speech event, assertive and directive speech acts are used among the troops since the speech acts there use should contain propositions of truth to win either the combats and the war.

Abstract

Self-editing writing process has become very important stage in creating good writing. STKIP PGRI students and lecturers pay more attention to writing content then writing mechanics editing. In this pandemic era teaching and learning activities is limited. This results student needs more assistant in editing their writing. MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) deals with installed applications in mobile phone to support editing writing process This study aims at improving self editing in writing process using application in mobile phones. Grammar and spelling checker applications was used for the purpose of the study. The participants of the study were first semester students of English Department, STKIP PGRI Jombang. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, 2 cycle classroom action research was designed. The study succeeds to apply some self editing techniques as follow: (1) MALL Introduction; which contains installing Proofreader application, observing the application features, observing the example work, (2) Self editing awareness; with some activities of inserting writing work into the application, observing the mistakes, choosing suggested correction, peer editing, (3) Self editing final; which activities are comparing manual self editing and MALL editing work and reconstructing the writing.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing The Persona and The Shadow in two literary works, Shatterday a by Harlan Ellison and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk which show the mental disorders of the main characters. Sometimes, some people are confused with what happen in their life and it makes them create a “new” personality to “explain” and express what they feel. In these literary works, the main characters “use” other personality to express their feeling and make them realized with the reality.This study is conducted to enrich the topic about persona and shadow. The writeruses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied and used psychoanalysis as the main theory of Carl G. Jung. The data  are  collected  from two literary works,  Shatterday and  Fight Club .This study reveals that the persona and the shadow in the stories are almost different. The persona is the same person that is confused with their life. Novins, in Shatterday, is a man who lives alone in his apartment and always run from his true life. Novins would not face anything with a realistic mind and he prefers to create someone that he thinks he is an ideal man. That is Jay. Meanwhile in Fight Club, the narrator creates someone who can give him a satisfaction and can be a savior to help him escape from his boring life. That is Tyler Durden. The arrangement of these two stories is almost same.  Novins  tries  to  make  a  peace  with  the  shadow  and  he surrendered with his shadow, in a good way, means that Novins willing to give his body and his life to Jay, in order to became a better person. Whereas the narrator try to make a peace with his shadow because of he thinks that what the shadow has done is wrong.
