Abstract

The previous study already conducted a similar study in several fields, except education, thus, this study was conducted to complete it. This study aimed at investigating discourse patterns of research article abstracts in the education discipline. The data were a set of research article abstracts of five sub-disciplines in education, i.e., language education, mathematics and natural science education, social education, technological education, and elementary education. The data were collected from journals of education study. This research was conducted by implementing a four-move abstract structure. The results found that Moves 1 (research space), 2 (research procedure), and 3 (result summary) were obligatory, while Move 4 (result evaluation) was considered an optional move. The most common pattern discovered was 1-2-3. The pattern of 1-2-3-4 is another common pattern obtained, except for social education. These results provide the discourse patterns of educational research article abstracts and are regarded as new findings in the previous and related studies.

Abstract

Design-based research (DBR)’s use in education research has been manifold since it provides teacher-researcher collaboration in order to improve theoretical understandings and plan an intervention to a non-optimal learning condition. Plethora of studies utilize the methodology to design and develop macro pedagogic documents, professional development programs, and refine the theoretical understanding in real classroom practices. However, its use for developing a set of instructional designs that promote critical meaning-making and reflection in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses is relatively scarce. The iterative cycle of DBR affords us to co-create the instructional design that utilizes some systemic functional linguistic (SFL) concepts to task-based language teaching (TBLT) in supporting students’ critical meaning-making. Students report they find TBLT suitable for their pace of learning as it organizes the pedagogic tasks in a sequential manner. Even though SFL concepts to approach texts were initially seen challenging, but with explicit instruction and scaffolding, they can carry on with the demands of the tasks. This informs that SFL-informed TBLT can be also adapted to a wider variety of contexts, adapting DBR cycles.

To collect the data, the instruments used included video, pre-test, and post-test. All data obtained were calculated using the SPSS 20 version. Data statistics revealed that the mean score was improved from the pre-test (63.23) to the post-test (84.52). After the normality and homogeneity test, the data obtained were categorized as standard and homogeny. In addition, according to the data analysis, the null hypothesis was rejected, which means that the use of educational learning video was very effective for boosting and improving students’ vocabulary skills.

Abstract

Smartphone has long been considered as a double-edged sword which has both positive and negative effects.  Instead of banning the use of smartphones, a smart teacher has to be able to encourage EFL learners to use smartphones wisely to facilitate their learning. Smartphones enable the learners to use the language in a real situation outside the classroom, which is called Extramural English Learning. This kind of situation is believed to contribute to learners vocabularies. Learners’ ability to use various kinds of vocabulary, especially English academic words, will make a positive contribution to their writing. Employing a correlation design, the aim of the research was to investigate the correlation between the use of smartphones as extramural English learning and learners’ vocabularies focusing on English academic words. Questionnaire and writing test were used as instruments to collect the data from 35 undergraduate students of English department in East Java, Indonesia. The results of the data analysis by using Pearson Correlation confirmed the significant positive correlation between the use of smartphones as extramural English learning and learners’ vocabularies that indicated the benefit of extramural activities with smartphones on enriching learners’ vocabulary. Further, the pedagogical implication was also discussed.

Abstract

Purposive behavior directly convey the students' mental process of critical thinking skill in analyzing literary work and producing composition. There is a theoretical and practical gap between the critical thinking process and products. This research descriptively designs to answer research problems. The previous study investigates the students’ written products and claims that they have a good critical thinking when they have multi references. In contrast, critical thinking is process of mental which students not only finding new information from some resources but also realizing their learning objective, identifying problems to motivate themselves to write a composition. As the results, the students who have a low level of critical thinking skill and they strongly aware of their gaps will analyze the literary work well, and a high level of critical thinking makes a power of analysis, an accurate and precise composition. Student’s mental process of critical thinking appears on the students’ process to read and cite a number of literacies, detect self-problem, encourage themselves to make a written texts based on the learning outcomes.
