Abstract

This research is aimed to find the character type of Lord Voldemort as described in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince and the most dominant character of Lord Voldemort using a formalistic and psychological approach. The writer formulates the problem by making the following questions: (1) what are the characters type of Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince novel?, (2) what is the dominant character of Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince Novel?. In the process of study and analysis of the character type of the main characters in the Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince novel, the writer uses a formalistic and psychological approach to analyze, examine and understand some of the main character's personality in a novel. The writer also conducts library research in completing this analysis. The theory used in analyzing the character until finally found one dominant character of the main character.

Abstract

Lesson Study is not learning model but a model of teachers' professional development through the study of collaborative learning and sustainable as well as carrying the principles of collegiality and mutual learning to build a learning community (Hendayana, et al., 2006). This Study conducted a library research through a review of journal article that discuss about lesson study. As a model of development, lesson study widely adopted by teachers in Indonesia but its implementation procedures have been amended in accordance with the context and situation. Lesson Study is also potentially be applied to the Real Teaching (PPL) for students LPTKs, but need a clear implementation guidelines and operational for students, teachers, professors, and school.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe Afghan domestic women and the impact of maleoppressionover them. The research uses qualitative approaches with feminism theory, especially radical feminism. The data are taken from thenovels, Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns and AtiqRahimi'sThe Patience Stone. In A Thousand Splendid Suns Mariam and Lailaare described as Afghan women are oppressed, powerless, marginalized and exploited in the domestic area. The impact of male domination are depression, anxiety,trauma and death either to the oppressor or the oppressed. This leads to the rejection against the dominancein the form of the struggle for freedom. In The Patience Stone, a female character whose name is unknown, experiencing violence in the household. Her husband does physical violence, sexual harassment and mental abuse. This caused her to be frustrated, depressed and traumatized.A tragic moment ends the story as the fruit of mal oppression against Afghan women in the domestic area, namely the desire to kill their husbands. From the portrait of women in Afghanistan as told by KhaledHosseini and AtiqRahimi, a moral value that can be drawn is a patriarchal system of society should be eliminated. Because of the patriarchal system, it will become the beginning of the maledominance to women in domestic area in this case their wives and daughters. Women should be treated as a partner in joy and sorrow. They are not considered as a slave or an outlet for their anger and desire.

Abstract

The use of the correct Japanese tourism vocabularies by guide when giving service to visitors is as one of form of politeness. This study describes many parts of speech in Japanese tourism vocabularies and politeness strategy used by guide when touring around tourism object in Bali.Theory which is used is Brown and Levinson politeness theory supported by Goi classifying theory and politeness theory and context which gives effect to content and form of guide’s communication when interacting with Japanese visitors. This qualitative research uses non-participant observation method by listening technique and makes a note by analyzing technique which is pragmatic equivalence. Result of the study shows that vocabularies of Japanese tourism use parts of speech which consist of verb, noun, adjective, which are spoken based on speaking situation context which follows it so that the correct vocabulary usage is as a form of politeness strategy of guide in giving service toward Japanese visitors. Moreover, guide has applied both negative and positive politeness strategy as service to JV based on situation context.

Abstract

This aims to reveal the ways of criticizing American government and wheedling the audients believe trough each speech act in movie. Pragmatic multimodal perspective is used to uncover both speech act and the cinematic aspect in order to know how the movie producer criticize and persuade audients to believe. This research is presented Qualitatively and the data taken from David Michôd (2016) work “War Machines”. It was found that the movie has three ways in criticizing the government and persuading the audien to believe. They are; 1. To contradict between speech and multimodality of cinematic to create an offensive criticism structure. 2. Use of mutually supportive between speech acts of and multimodality to create a common criticism structure (mutual affirmation of speech acts and multimodality). 3. The use of personification of institutions to direct criticism of policy holders.

Abstract

The scenes in the trailer shown are all sorts of interesting and prominent scenes to attract the attention of potential viewers and be able to describe the entire contents of the movie without giving too much information. The trailer was created to promote theatrical release of the movie and the movie trailer was a clip containing all the parts of the advertised movie, shown before other movie screenings in the cinema, and aimed for the audience to come to watch. The best way to teach English is to use interesting material, appropriate teaching methods, the use of technology that can be one of the important and effective support tools. Meta-analysis is essentially a synthesis of a topi  taken from several research reports. Based on the synthesis is drawn conclusions about the topic under study. This research uses some similar research results as basic data in conducting studies and conclusions. From the same five studies, it is concluded that Movie Trailer is effective as a learning medium because it can improve understanding in English learning.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to measure whether there is or not significant effect of teaching reading by utilizing Hot Potatoes software toward students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. The variables used were the teaching treatment of Hot Potatoes Software as the independent variable and the students’ reading comprehension of Descriptive Text as dependent variable. Then, the research designed was Quasi-experimental design and the presentation of data used was quantitative. The data were obtained from the eleventh grade, of which 28 students were taken as sample. The students are divided into two groups; experiment group consisted of 12 students and control group consists of 16 students. To get the data, the pre-test and post-test were applied and then analyzed using t-test formula. The researcher had concluded that there is Significant effect of Hot Potatoes Software toward the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The result showed that mean of students’ post-test was increased. It is proved by the t-test (8.54) which is higher than t-table (2.05) at level of significance 5%. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and it proved that Hot Potatoes Software had significant effect toward students’ reading comprehension of Descriptive Text

Abstract

This research focused on the use of portofolio as the strategy of the teaching and learning process. The resercher limited on one typical of portofolio used in this research, namely summarizing. However, it was found that most of the learning process in STKIP PGRI Jombang used group presentation. It was also done by the researcher in Belajar Pembelajaran subject. The researcher would like to apply the use of portofolio in group presentation. To investigate the effectiveness of the strategy used , the writer conducted a quasi-experimental research design which there were two groups, experimental group and control group. The subject of  the research was 37 students of 2014 A as the experimental group and 31 students of 2014 B as the control group. In collecting the data, the researcher gave posttest to both groups. In which the experimental group used portofolio in the treatment. After having the data, then the researcher analyzed it by using ANCOVA. And the result shows that the significant value is higher than significant level (0,429 > 0.05). It means that the use of portofolio does not have significant effect applied in teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Novel becomes the exciting entertainment that everyone can enjoy. Within the novel the writer can analyze the part of both intrinsic and extrinsic. In this research the writer analyzes the feminist perspective in the Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. The writer takes Miranda Priestly character as a viewing of feminist perspective in this modern era. The research is conducted to find out the characters and characterization and feminist perspective of Miranda Priestly. In analyzing the research, the writer uses feminist approach to analyze about women. Besides, the writer also uses library research which are the novel itself and some books or journal that can be found in the internet related to the character, characterization and feminism. There are nine characterization of Miranda Priestly shown in the analysis. The characterization that the writer analyzes are Jewish, Fashionable, Hectic, Demand, Power, Influence, Discriminate, Smart person, Care. The Feminist perspective of Miranda Priestly as women in this modern era are Appearance, Experience, and Psychology.

Abstract

Teaching second language learners encourages lecturer to show up their creativity in class. For example: they can use new technique by considering need analysis, such as: using shadow reading in teaching English. Shadow reading is one of teaching technique applied in teaching English, especially teaching English intonation. Because intonation plays crucial part in conveying ideas, feeling, and information to other. Besides, considering pitch movement, second language learners also must consider the expresiveness and articulacy in English. The phenomenon encourages the researcher to conduct this study on teaching English intonation by using shadow reading. In this study, the researcher is eager to find the effectiveness of using shadow reading in teachingEnglish intonation. The researcher takes the first semester students of STKIP PGRI Jombang as the subject of this research. This study uses quasi experimental design. It is designed by using test, mainly: pre-test and post-test. The result of this study shows that using shadow reading is effective in teaching English Intonation. Through shadow reading, lecturer can bring hilarious atmosphere into the class of second language learners. It also can increase second language learners’ ability in using English intonation correctly
