Abstract

The platform-based transportation business model has swept across almost all regions in Indonesia. Millions of workers have been absorbed into the workforce in this business model. However, the lack of government protection, compounded by the absence of regulations governing working conditions and safety for workers, often leads to working conditions that favor the applicator side. In this less-than-ideal situation, some workers (online motorcycle taxi drivers) have formed online motorcycle taxi communities as an alternative to cope with these less-than-ideal conditions. This article will look at how the online motorcycle taxi community is used as a medium of indirect resistance against applicators. Using a qualitative method, we adopt Browney Frey's (2020) framework on how the vulnerability of the platform workforce is produced by exploring the online motorcycle taxi community and resistance in Indonesia. Data collection is conducted through interviews and observations. We interviewed at least two communities and more than six drivers. This article argues that the organization of online motorcycle taxis that are formed through the community is part of political expression to get security guarantees. At a certain level, the existence of the community is used as a covert medium of everyday resistance. This fieldwork took place in Palu, Central Sulawesi. This article contributes to understanding the nature of organizers and models of workers' resistance to flexible work regimes sponsored by digital work platforms.

Abstract

Policy is a set of actions embodied as a product of laws to improve social interactions. Social and health policies are formulated to address public issues; for example, health issues upon which health policies are created to solve the respective issues. Infant mortality (IM) is one of the indicators used to assess the health prevalence and socioeconomic welfare of the community. Klaten, among other areas, suffers from high IM, so it is imperative to investigate this issue in Klaten Regency. The present study focuses on IM in Klaten Regency in 2020 and uses the Cluster Study to identify areas in Klaten Regency that need better attention and advocacy related to IM. This study aims to cluster the subdistricts in Klaten Regency based on IM variables, the number of pre-prosperous families, and the number of health facilities. In addition, this study investigates the obstacles to implementing the programs to reduce IM in Klaten Regencies. The results showed an unsatisfactory finding in all three variables. The Government Policy of Klaten Regency to reduce IM has been embodied in several flagship programs, such as SUKETI. However, the implementation of SUKETI Programs was not found in any publication, so it is considered not working. However, inequitable implementation of the programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other barriers has resulted in suboptimal, partial efforts to reduce IM.

Abstract

This study discusses the capacity of the nagari government to utilize village funds during the COVID-19 pandemic. Limitations in communication patterns, interaction, and community legitimacy are identified as issues in policy implementation. As the front line to accelerate economic recovery for the community during the pandemic, the nagari government has to offer various innovations in policy implementation, including the utilization of village funds. Remarkably, one of the nagari in West Sumatra, namely Nagari Pasia Laweh, utilized the pandemic as a turning point for generating various innovations using village funds. Consequently, this nagari was rewarded as the best Nagari in village fund transparency in 2020 and the best nagari in West Sumatra in 2021. This study employed a qualitative method to observe the phenomena related to the institutional capacity of nagari in the utilization of village funds during the pandemic. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with the purposive sampling technique. The results indicate that various policy innovations are carried out through schemes involving local actors in Nagari Pasia Laweh using a kaum-based method. The collaboration between the government and local elite facilitates the acceptance and implementation of various policies in the community. Thus, community participation and legitimacy greatly influence Nagari Pasia Laweh to the extent that it is selected as the best nagari.

In order to maintain the sustainability of this mechanization, it is crucial to assess the balance of economic, environment, and social impact of the mechanization. This study aims at exploring the sustainability of mechanization in three tea industries in Indonesia using sustainability intensification (SI) indicators framework. Drawing on the case of three tea plantations industry in the West Java, this study applied a descriptive exploratory qualitative method. Data were collected through participant observation, in depth interviews, and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using five domains of sustainability intensification (SI) indicators, namely productivity, economic, environment, human, and social domain. Findings of this study suggest that tea harvest mechanization increases productivity and economic profit, although the usage of fuel to operate the machine has contributed to the air pollution in the plantation area. Tea harvest mechanization also improve human domain by increasing workers household income. In social domain, it strengthens social capital among workers and promotes the formation of a new gender division of labor which is more inclusive. In order to enhance sustainability of mechanization in Indonesian tea industry, it is crucial to re-design the technology into a more gender friendly, increase women's capacity and access to resources, re-assure gender balance and equity in group work, and strengthen sustainable Occupational Health, and Safety (OHS) programs.

Abstract

Tourism development and management do not exclude the possibility of embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including the use of information and communication technology to realize smart tourism. This is crucial because tourism development must adapt to technological advancements and innovations to provide the best service to tourists. This research employs a mixed-method approach that integrates quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data is derived from statistical indicators of visits to understand the diversity of viewpoints and questionnaire responses from tourists. Qualitative data includes interviews with informants, observations, and research documentation processed through SWOT analysis to formulate strategies based on identified internal and external factors. The study found that the management of the Singkil Beach Karang Pakis tourist destination had not fully maximized its tourism potential. Therefore, a tourism destination development strategy is formulated based on the concepts of strengths-opportunities, weaknesses-opportunities, strengths-threats, and weaknesses-threats. The concept of smart tourism is applied through the implementation of smart experiences, destinations, and business ecosystems as part of the development strategy. By integrating information and communication technology, this concept promises innovation in tourist destination management. An increase in tourist visits, thereby enhancing the economic quality for stakeholders, such as Pokdarwis, tourism managers, and the local community marked the successful implementation of the smart tourism concept.

Abstract

This research seeks to uncover the issues surrounding the controversy over the implementation of standardization by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia for Islamic preachers and  teachers in Indonesia. This controversy has been going on for so long that before it was implemented, there  were several changes in the name of the program to avoid polemics in the community. The exchange of discourses between policymakers and policy recipients is interesting to further study. To answer these questions, researchers use research methods that are almost the same as those developed by Foucault, namely Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA. This method emphasizes correcting the discourse that develops in society, especially regarding the standardization program for religious teachers (da'i or ustad). Because religious teachers are also closely related to teaching or da'wah issues. The essence of da'wah is the teaching of the Islamic religion; therefore, this research focuses on the relationship patterns in religious teaching toward other parties related to it. Many studies have been conducted regarding power relations, especially those related to education. However, very few people have studied power relations in religious teaching spaces. This method also develops a way of researching by looking at news in the mass media, where the news produces a certain knowledge that is considered new. Therefore, the researcher collected data in three ways: media observation, interviews with actors, and documentation. According to the researcher, these three methods represent the same method used by Michel Foucault. The findings produced by researchers are three factors that influence the dynamics of power relation patterns. First, power/knowledge relations are produced by several parties. Second, the government has a strong interest in the implementation of the standardization program for religious preachers. Third, the political motive isalmost clearly seen.

Abstract

This research is motivated by conflicts in urban areas, which are escalating in frequency. Johar Baru District was selected due to the prevalence of inter-group conflicts, specifically in the form of brawls, which have become a daily occurrence in the area. The prevalence of this kind of conflict traumatizes the residents left behind in the area. Consequently, there is a pressing need to explore the voices of the community in conflict-prone areas that need to be explored. Communication infrastructure theory was chosen to support the analysis because this theory was developed to articulate problems in urban areas. The research method chosen is a case study. The research results show that the community expressed three essential things related to conflict: the dangers of drugs, peace, and providing employment opportunities. This research also shows that Communication Infrastructure Theory (CIT) is reliable for mapping conflict in urban areas as well as capturing the voices of communities that have been marginalized in conflict-prone areas.
