Abstract

Community service is one of the duties that must be carried out by every lecturer in Higher Education as one aspect of Tri Dharma University. This community service was titled "The Production of F0 Oyster Mushroom Seeds (Pleurotus ostreatus), The Post-Harvest Handling, and The Utilization of Baglog Waste into Compost" which involved two partners. Partner 1 was in Pegajahan Village, Pegajahan Sub-District who experienced problems with the availability of high-quality F0 and F1 seeds and low production in terms of quality and quantity. Partner 2 was in Blok H Village Dolok Masihul Sub-District, Serdang Bedagai Regency who had a lack of knowledge about post-harvest handling and composting from oyster mushroom baglog waste. Solutions offered for both partners were: (1) transfer of knowledge, such as lectures and discussions; (2) training; and (3) mentoring about the cultivation of F0 and F1 oyster mushrooms. Goals and targets of this activity were: (1) the communities or the farmer groups were able to produce and cultivate F0 and F1 oyster mushrooms, so they did not need to buy F0 and F1 seeds from other regions and can fulfill the market demand; and (2) Partner 2 was able to make compost from oyster mushroom baglog waste and various processed food from oyster mushroom to increase their income. The results of this activity have provided benefits to Partner 1 regarding their ability to produce F0 and F1 seeds, ability to process post-harvest oyster mushrooms into several types of food to increase its selling value, and ability to make compost from baglog waste which can be used for plants to overcome environmental pollution and to increase Partner 2’s income.

Abstract

This community service aims to introduce revenue analytics in beef cattle business to breeders in order to know the amount of their income in every scale of livestock ownership level in Hamlet I, Kelambir Village, Hamparan Perak Sub-District, Deli Serdang Regency. This activity was expected to improve the ability and increase the knowledge of beef cattle breeders to do self-analysis on how to separate accepted and cost components to be incurred in one period of care. Thus, it would be easier for the breeders to calculate the total income in one period of beef cattle breeding which will improve their welfare. The impact brought from this program was that a number of breeders have understood about revenue analytics and started to calculate the total income they have had. Therefore, they can learn to make the production cost of their business efficient which leads to an increased revenues.

Abstract

Percut Sei Tuan Sub-district is an agricultural production center in Deli Serdang Regency. The area of irrigated paddy field in Percut Sei Tuan Sub-district comprises of 3,610 ha and 1,616 ha of non-irrigated paddy field. The farmer association groups (tani mitra) consisting of Farmer Group "Pasar II" and Farmer Group "Mulia" are located in Tanjung Selamat Village. Much land in Tanjung Selamat Village has been converted into an industrial area; previously the paddy field area reached 600 hectares, but only 200 hectares remains now. The Farmer Groups "Pasar II" and "Mulia" consist of 30 and 76 farmers with paddy rice field area of 25 ha and 23 ha respectively, and rice productivity amounts to 6.2 tons/ha and 7 tons/ha. The problems of the farmers were the high land use conversion resulting in reduced harvested area and only a few farmers change the local location-specific organic materials into organic fertilizers independently. The purposes of this community service activity were to increase the farmers' income through the implementation of salibu technology whereby farmers can harvest 2-3 times in one planting and to increase the farmers’ understanding and knowledge about the manufacturing process of organic fertilizer and pesticide. The solutions offered were including counseling, a training and plot demonstration on salibu technology, and the production of bokashi straw. The outcome of this IbM has resulted in several things: bokashi of compressed hay with Local Microorganism from cattle intestine and Trichoderma, organic pesticide products based on Corynebacterium and Trichoderma, and farming analysis with salibu technology.

Abstract

The low productivity of paddy in Langsat Permai Village, Bunga Raya District, Siak Regency, one of them is causes the unavailability of sufficient water for crop cultivation, so it is necessary to do water management by making canal blocking to be used on rice plants in the area. This is done to meet the water needs of rice plants during the dry season. Therefore, assistance is provided through water management in Langsat Permai Village, Bunga Raya District, Siak Regency. Mentoring strategies are carried out by discussing directly with farmer groups about the impact of making canal blocking. Through this activity, the availability of water for rice plants during the dry season is fulfilled. Production of 1 Ha of rice before the blocking canal produced 4-5 tons/harvest to 6-7.8 tons/harvest after the canal blocking.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the efficiency of cattle farm business in Huta Gondang Rejo Nagori Bandar Tongah Bandar Huluan Subdistrict Simalungun Regency through the use of pellet complete feed based on palm oil fronds and agricultural waste. This activity is conducted on cattle ranchers who are members of the farming community group Huta Gondang Rejo. Farmers are given counseling and training on the processing of palm oil fronds and agricultural waste into livestock feed and the establishment of a complete ration of palm-based pellet and agricultural waste. To facilitate the transfer of this technology to the breeder, then prepared a complete feed pellet with 5 types of machines. Palm Crusher Counter Machines or Palm Crafter Engines with a capacity of 600 kg/hour. Pellet printing machine (granulator) with capacity of 100 kg/hour. Mixer machine (mixer feed) with a capacity of 50 kg/stir. Dryer (Oven) with capacity of 10 kg/rack. Manual press feed press tool with specification 2 kg/print. Measuring the success of this activity is seen from the level of farmer adoption of pelleting technology and the difference of ration conversion between cattle that get complete feed and conventional or traditional. Performance of palm cropping machine for cattle that get complete pellet feed is better than cattle that get conventional or traditional feed. This Chopper machine can count the palm stem from the tip of the base of the leaf to the stem (80% of the palm stem). Through the activities of plant waste feed technology is expected to achieve some outcomes, namely, improve the productivity of farming through the system integration of livestock combine farming system with synergistic system to form an effective, efficient and environmentally friendly.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the main health problems in Indonesia, which if not controlled will result in health, psychological, social and economic burdens. A common clinical consequence of hypertension is impaired cognitive function, namely dementia and senility, which can be examined through the Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina). The service program which is carried out by the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU) is an examination of cognitive function and blood pressure in Padang Bulan Selayang II region. Examinations are carried out in accordance with the 2017 World Alzheimer Month and are followed by lay seminars on dementia, brain gym exercises (gerak latih otak/GLO) as well as brain teasers. The activity involved 26 participants from integrated development post (pos pembinaan terpadu/Posbindu) with a mean systolic blood pressure (TDS) 131.54 + 18.70 mmHg, mean diastolic blood pressure (TDD) 83.85 + 8.98 mmHg, mean mean arterial pressure 99, 69 + 9.47 mmHg and a mean MoCA-Ina score of22 + 5.03. Blood pressure monitoring, education of community awareness and cognitive stimulation at regular intervals are expected to prevent and reduce the incidence of hypertension, dementia and senility.
