Abstract

Study of Social Support and Factors Affecting EffortsImproving the Quality of Life for Patients with LungTuberculosis.Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Decreasein the quality of life of tuberculosis patients can have a negative impact on the continuity of therapy which causes failureof therapy. The quality of life of pulmonary TB patients is important to be assessed in various aspects ranging from theaspects of physical well-being, psychology, social and environmental relations. The purpose of this study was to examinesocial support and influencing factors influencing efforts to improve the quality of life of pulmonary TB patients. This typeof research is observational research using cross sectional design. The study population was all pulmonary tuberculosispatients in Palembang City. This study received a total sample of 111 people. The quality of life was measured by theIndonesian WHOQOL-BREFF questionare instrument and the results were obtained by univariate, bivariate, andmultivariate analysis using the SPSS 22 program. Of the 111 study respondents, a good percentage of the quality of lifeof tuberculosis patients in Palembang City Health Center was 71.17% and the not good at 28.83%. There was nosignificant relationship between demographic characteristics (age, sex, body mass index, education level, employmentstatus, and marital status), blood pressure, history of diabetes, and history of smoking with quality of life. There is asignificant relationship between treatment duration. family support. friend support. and community support with thequality of life of tuberculosis patients (p value <0.05). Patients with tuberculosis with poor family support have theopportunity to have a poor quality of life of 86.18%.

Abstract

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by bacterium Treponema pallidum which can be transmitted through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, and vertically from mother to fetus. If pregnant woman suffers from syphilis, transplacental infection can occur to the fetus, causing abortion, prematurity, low birth weight, stillbirth, or congenital syphilis. The diagnosis of syphilis in pregnancy is established based on history, clinical manifestations, laboratory and serologic examination. Screening in the first trimester with non-treponema tests such as rapid plasma reagin (RPR) or venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) combined with a treponema test such as the treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay (TPHA) is important for every pregnant woman. Clinical manifestations of syphilis to the fetus depend by gestational age and stage of maternal syphilis also fetal immune response. Early detection and adequate management are important to prevent the transmission of syphilis infection from mother to fetus.

Abstract

There are several accidents when the bodies of victims from natural disasters or disaster from human error cannotbe identified because of severe damage and only be found a few parts of the body. The estimated length of the body can be done by measuring a certain part of body to estimate height. The regression formula using the length of the index finger of the hand, age and sex has been proofed as valid estimate of the height and is useful in clinical context. The aim of this study wasto determine the relation of middle finger length to stature of Bataknese at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU). This study was a descriptive correlative study with cross-sectional design. The population was students, permanent lectures, and education staffs from Bataknese at the Faculty of Medicine UMSU who had completed the inclusion and exclusion criterias. The sampling technique used total sampling method with the total subject was 63 people. Index finger length was positively and significantly correlated to stature with coefficient correlation ranging from 0.611 to 0.681 (p<0.001). Linear regression equations were showing Standard Error of the Estimate (SEE) ranging from 2.883 to 3.3839 (p<0.001). There was significantly relation of index finger length to stature with strong and very strong correlation, so the stature can be estimated by measuring index finger length with linear regression equation.

Abstract

Concern regarding secular trend of declining age of menarche has increased in the last few decades. Prevalence of childhood and adolescents obesity in Indonesia has also increased lately while some studies suggest that increased body mass index associates with the early onset of puberty which known to be the risk factor of many health problems. This study aims to investigate whether age of menarche is associated with body mass index in adolescents in Palembang. Sample of this cross sectional designed study was elementary and junior high school girls from 8 schools in Palembang taken with stratified random sampling. A total of 388 respondents met the inclusion criteria. Age of menarche and body mass index got from the questionnaire and anthropometric examination were analysed using Chi-square test. Out of 388 respondents, 49,5% experienced menarche at the earlier age than the mean age of menarche of 12,36 years and 20,1% were classified as overweight and obese. The average menarcheal age of overweight and obese respondents was earlier than those classified as normal and underweight. This study proved that there is a highly significant association between age of menarche and body mass index with the p-value of 0,000 (Chi-square test). There is a highly significant association between body mass index during peripubertal period and the age of menarche. Strict monitoring on body mass index of elementary and junior high school girls is necessary to prevent early puberty.

Abstract

Leprosy is a chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium lepraeinfection, which affects skin and nerves, then can result in disability. Interleukin-10 have an important role in the pathogenesis of leprosy. Polymorphism in this gene promoter is thought to affect IL-10 production, which can then influence the process of microbial elimination in the development of leprosy. One of the most common polymorphisms associated with IL-10 is the polymorphism of the -1082 on the gene promoter. The purpose of this study was to identify the polymorphism of the -1082 interleukin-10 gene promoter in leprosy patients treated at RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. This research is an observational descriptive study with cross sectional design. Polymorphism of -1082 interleukin-10 gene promoter was measured by PCR-RFLP method, electrophoresis, and visualized in UV light. From this study it was found that the frequency distribution of genotype AA was 80%, AG was 14%, and GG was 6%. The frequency distribution of allele A is 87% and allele G is 13%. Wild type genotype is more common in leprosy sufferers (80%).

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of prehypertension in Indonesia is 48,4%. Obesity is one of the risk factor of developing prehypertension. Obesity can be measured using body fat percentage. A high body fat percentage will increased the level of plasma angiotensinogen, rennin, activity of angiotensin converting enzyme, and aldosterone. These factors contribute to a higher blood pressure. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant association between body fat percentage and incidence of prehypertension. Method: This study is an analytic study with cross-sectional study approach. Data collection was carried out with a total 106 respondents aged around 17- 22 years. This researched was collected from August to September 2019 at Faculty of Medicine and Health Science of Atma Jaya. The research data were collected through filling out a demographic questionnaire, blood pressure measurement using sphygmomanometer, and body fat percentage measurement using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Bivariate analysis of the association between gender and blood pressure, association between gender and body fat percentage, and association of body fat percentage with blood pressure were analyzed using the chi-square method. Result: Bivariate analysis shows that there is a significant association between gender and blood pressure (p=0,001), association between gender and body fat percentage (p=0,000) and association between body fat percentage and the incidence of prehypertension (p=0,000) with OR = 3,992 Conclusion: A high body fat percentage is a risk factor for developing prehypertension.
