Abstract

Instilling values of tolerance between religious adherents from an early age is an important strategy in creating a harmonious and inclusive society. This study aims to describe the tolerant character of elementary school students and the process of character formation in the school environment. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation in several elementary schools with a background of religious diversity. The results of the study show that tolerant character is evident in students' daily behavior, such as attitudes of helping each other, working together, respecting differences, and reminding each other in terms of goodness. The process of forming this attitude is carried out through activities such as interfaith prayer together, providing advice and role models from teachers, and providing freedom for students to practice their respective beliefs. A conducive school environment, the role of teachers as role models, and healthy social interactions are important factors in strengthening attitudes of tolerance between students. These findings emphasize the urgency of character education that integrates diversity values at the elementary school level.

Abstract

Islamic education in character building of students is integrated in rational and mental movements, namely through changes in the way of thinking, acting, and behaving. The main values that are the basis for character education include faith, noble morals (akhlak karimah), discipline, simplicity, and knowledge. Children who have strong characters tend not to commit negative actions such as bullying, which often occurs in schools and Islamic boarding schools. For example, students who have mental weaknesses are often the target of ridicule, insults, and even physical violence. Therefore, caregivers and administrators of Islamic boarding schools need to take an active role in dealing with this kind of problem. This study uses a qualitative approach with several techniques, such as data collection, data analysis, documentation studies, and direct observation. Informants in this study include the Islamic boarding school, caregivers, ustadz and ustadzah, administrators, and a number of students at the Al Hassan Rembang Islamic Boarding School. The results of the study show the importance of character building in students or students as an effort to prevent bullying behavior. The caretakers and administrators of Islamic boarding schools have implemented several character strengthening steps, including: (1) requiring discipline in attitudes and behavior, (2) teachers consistently providing advice to students, (3) giving sanctions as a form of guidance, and (4) providing motivation to encourage positive development. The prevention strategies for bullying behavior include: (1) applying punishment as a deterrent, (2) getting used to being friendly and polite, and (3) being an example from educators as a good example.

Abstract

In Indonesia’s pluralistic society, religious tolerance is fundamental to maintaining harmony and sosial cohesion. However, rising cases of religious-based intolerance—particularly among youth—highlight the inadequate internalization of pluralistic values. This study explores the perspectives of Generation Z on religious tolerance and the strategic role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in fostering pluralism. Using a qualitative library research approach, this study analyzed scholarly literature from the past two decades to identify patterns connecting Generation Z’s characteristics, Islamic tolerance teachings, and educational strategies. The findings reveal that Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays a strategic role in fostering a tolerant attitude in Generation Z through contextual and inclusive learning. By instilling the values of justice, compassion, and human rights, as well as the role model of teachers, PAI forms the character of students who are empathetic and respect diversity.

Abstract

This article explores KH. Hasyim Asy'ari's thoughts on the relationship between Islam and nationality from the perspective of Indonesian religious nationalism. According to KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, Islam and nationalism are not contradictory; on the contrary, they work together to build a religious and nationalistic nation. The concept of “Hubbul Wathan Minal Iman,” which means “love of the homeland is part of faith,” serves as a moral and spiritual foundation that combines the spirit of nationalism with the faith of Muslims. He demonstrated strong and inclusive Islamic nationalism in his struggle for independence, particularly through the Jihad Resolution fatwa and the establishment of Nahdlatul Ulama. This religious nationalism is still applied in education, religious moderation, and strengthening national unity today. Building a moderate, tolerant, and socially just national character is based on the thinking of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari. The results of the study show that the intellectual and practical legacy of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari has contributed significantly to the formation of a harmonious Indonesian national identity based on Islamic values.

Abstract

This study investigates Abdurrahman Wahid’s concept of cosmopolitan Islam, which serves as a critical framework for developing an inclusive, democratic, and humanistic Islamic discourse in Indonesia. The core issue addressed in this research is the tension between exclusive religious interpretations and the pluralistic vision promoted by Wahid. The purpose of this study is to explain the theoretical construction of cosmopolitan Islam in Wahid’s thought and to analyze its relevance to contemporary socio-religious challenges. This research employs a qualitative library research approach by examining Wahid’s writings, scholarly literature, and previous studies related to pluralism, religious moderation, and multiculturalism. The findings reveal that Wahid’s cosmopolitanism is grounded in universal human values, cultural openness, and interreligious dialogue. His ideas are reflected not only in theoretical discussions but also in practical actions, including the defense of minority rights, the promotion of democratic principles, and the recognition of local cultures as legitimate expressions of Islamic identity. The study concludes that Wahid’s cosmopolitan Islam remains highly relevant for strengthening religious moderation and countering intolerance in modern Indonesia.
