Abstract

Literatures mostly focus on the Indonesian maritime communities discussing the local-traditional institutions, socio-economics, fishing techniques, marine fishery modernization which stressing capitalism and global market, poverty of fishing communities, as well as marine ecosystem destruction. In fact, most of those studies neglect the navigation and maritime interaction of fishermen, which become the key to comprehend the core and characteristics of maritime culture over the world. This article aims to identify and analyze the maritime geobio-socio-cultural insights of the Buginese-Makassarese fishermen within the context of their voyage and interaction with the other fishermen communities in Indonesia. The data were collected selectively from some research reports, especially “Studying the Institution and Maritime Cultural Concept of Buginese-Makassarese, Mandarese, and Butonese Seamans Supporting the Strength of National Integration and Social Harmony” (LP2M Unhas, 2010), in which I participated as coordinator and team member. Froom the new “navigation and reproduction of maritime geo-socio-cultural insights” model, four themes of maritime geo-bio-socio-cultural insights of the Buginese-Makassarese can be identified, namely (1) the insight of geo-bio-climate Nusantara sea, (2) the insight of sea as space with its bio-abiotic resources as opened-closed property/access, (3) the insight of maritime ethnic and culture diversity, and (4) the concept of homeland and maritime nation unity. Sumber data untuk penulisan artikel ini diambil secara selektif dari beberapa laporan penelitian, khususnya “Studying the Institution and Maritime Cultural Concept of Buginese-Makassarese, Mandarese, and Butonese Seamans Supporting the Strength of National Integration and Social Harmony” (LPPM Unhas, 2010) di mana penulis terlibat aktif sebagai koordinator maupun anggota tim peneliti.

Abstract

The beginning of the 16th century can be seen as the time when the history of the two big powers in the Malay world–Majapahit and Malaka–had ended and the period of “stable instability” began. That was the time when the new emerging kingdoms were involved in the highly unstable relationship. Despite of the conflicts and uncertainties, the Malay literary tradition began during this period. Sejarah Melayu (Sulalat us Salihin) or Malay Annals is one of the most famous manuscripts in Malay literary tradition. It was written by Tun Sri Lanang, the Bendahara (“prime minister”) of Johor (a kingdom on Malay Peninsula), who later became the district-head of Samalanga, Aceh- Darussalam. The manuscript does not only describe the history of the Malay kingdoms–from the time of Palembang through the establishment of Malaka to the crisis of the Sultanate of Johor– but also discusses the ethics of power. This manuscript can be compared with Taj us Salatin, written in 1603. The basic foundation of power is justice. However, can the sense of justice be used to oppose the ruler, who has failed to perform the justice? Then, how are the dilemma between justice and rebellion be solved? Keywords: sirna ilang krta ning bhumi, Majapahit & Malaka, Sejarah Melayu, traditional historiography, political theory of Malay, justice and rebellion

Abstract

Abstract

The incident around Bintan Island on August 13, 2010 between Indonesia-Malaysia resulted in many protests and demonstrations against the Malaysian Government and the Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). SBY was regarded indolent to act. Public also accused the Indonesian Government had something concealed in this incident. It threatened SBY’s reputation, especially to the positive self image he has built. As one of the ways of saving his reputation, President SBY delivered an official speech regarding the Indonesian-Malaysian relationship on September 1, 2010. This article analyzed SBY’s speech using the dramaturgy framework i.e. the elements of settingaudience and language use. On a wider level, it shows that there is a gap on perceived nationalism between the Presiden SBY and furious public. Keywords: SBY’s speech, performance, dramaturgy, nationalism

Abstract

The relation between Pancasila and religions under sociological sphere creates a permanent tension. As a source of value and symbolical system, both factors has contested to gain followers and for defining reality, despite the fact that the two are actually in need and fulfill one another. Pancasila needs religion to enrich the meaning of life, and as the major source to deliver nation and statehood ethics based on social piousity derived from religion. This is also true that religion can become the source of answer on problems that lies beyond reality, such as the life after death explanation. On the other hand, religion needs Pancasila to gather universal values under different religions such as: justice, equality and humanity, which took different normative forms in each religion. Pancasila has the ability to mediate or bridge different primordial bounds derived from different religious cosmology, which could ignite conflict. This mutualistic symbiose can be achieved if both Pancasila and religion can realize their positions and limitations. In recent Indonesia, the relation between Pancasila and religion is under the most worrisome tension. At one point, the flow of religious (Islamic)-puritanism with its truth claim, and other claims, has changed the form of religiousity that was inclusive, tolerant, sincretic, adaptative; to another form that is exclusive, intolerant, anti-nationalism, anti-democracy, and anti-tradition. On the other point, the over-spirited voice of democracy radicalisation, gender equality and secularism claims has negated the need for ethics (religion) to enter the public sphere. To add the complication, the relation between Pancasila, religion, and culture, has to face globalization wave that disregard limits of tradition, nationalism and religious authority. Keywords: Pancasila, Agama, Kebudayaan.

Abstract

In recent years, pesantren is often depicted as the breeding place for terrorism and radicalism. This image emerges due to the involvement of some pesantren alumnis in violent actions such as in the Bali bombing tragedy. This image brings negative impact to pesantren while in fact this institution is rich with the texts and pratices related to peace issues. Using library research, this article discusses this problem by looking at the texts which are often used in pesantren as well as the practises that have been examplified by their alumni in the peace building activities. This article then analyzes why recently pesantren’s role in peace building activities seem blunt so that their image related to violence emerges. This article argues that this problem occur due to the modelling traditions which is currently fading within pesantren. Moreover, it is found that there is little effort to contextualize the texts interpretation within pesantren community so that they face difficulties to respond the complexity of conflict and violent cases occur in the society. Abstract

Key Words: state responsibility; state sovereignty; transboundary environmental harm; Indonesian environmental legal system; Asean Agreement for Transboundary Haze Pollution

This research aims to describe the status and roles of Javanese women in Indonesian literary texts from the colonial era, independence era, today’s era, and Javanese women in reality. The problems that need to be answered are the status and roles of Javanese women in Indonesian literary texts and in the reality, the significant change from an era to the others, and the differences between the status and roles of Javanese women in Indonesian literary texts and in the reality. Abstract

Ruwat is one of the ceremonies in Javanese tradition, which is conducted in accordance to the culture’s cosmology. In Javanese cosmology, changes or transfers are considered as dangerous, and therefore a ceremony is performed to liberate the individual from such dangers. As a ritual, Ruwat is always conducted every 1st Suro according to the Javanese calendar or 1st Muharram according to the Islamic calendar. In its development, cultural agents have brought Ruwat outside its original scope. Ruwat is no longer practiced within Javanese circles only but also within public circles and attracts tourism and commodities. In addition, Ruwat is also practiced at a national scope, especially in ceremonies blessing the work of political leaders. Ruwat, which was given and practiced within Javanese private sphere has transformed to the public sphere. It is now practiced even within the scope of the nation state, which is not given but constructed. This article explains the dynamics of shift from private to public; and from sacral to profane purposes practiced in the scope of the nation state.
