Abstract

Since the 1980’s the paradigm of development in developing countries, especially in urban areas, has relied on the economic development with economic growth as the main output. This model tends to produce poverty, deprivation, and social exclusion. Social exclusion is a condition, in which individuals, families, and groups in the population do not have the social and political access toward social resources, lack of participation in social activities, and have inadequate living conditions and facilities. This development paradigm has been criticized as it only uses economic indicators and neglects other non-economical aspects. The challenge is to redefine or conceptualize the development in a wider term as a continuum process on a society or a social system led to social inclusion. It is a new approach, which develops an open environment and involves everyone from various backgrounds in the development process. As the development gap between rural and urban areas is getting wider, understanding social inclusion development is a need. Furthermore, President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) Nawacita declared that the State must be present among society; therefore, the development should start from the periphery to the centre in order to improve the quality of life, prosperity, and democracy. This paper aims to reconstruct the values of urban development along with the concept of social inclusion in order to increase the quality of life, social relationships, social cohesion, social participation, and social capital in Solo, Central Java. Keywords: social exclusion, social inclusion, inclusive development

Abstract

Tenggarong Seberang subdistrict had been an agriculture area since the 1980s which was started when migrants were located there. The subdistrict had ever been a rice granary for Kutai Kartanegara Regency. To support the agricultural activity, the regency goverment developed a rice processing unit to increase the quality of rice from that place. However, while the coal mining activity around Tenggarong Seberang is increasing, at the same time the agricultural land has changed its function become a mining concession. Land grabbing has emerged between peasants who are consistant to work in agriculture and those who see the mining as an economic sector which will bring a more advance life. This paper attempts to understand how the peasants survive in their agricultural activity with all obstacles and from mining industry which continuously push to the agricultural areas. This paper is based on the research conducted in 2014. Keywords: agriculture, mining, competition, and political ecology

Abstract

This article aims (1) to document proverbs in the Pagu language and (2) to analyse their structure, figure of speech, as well as semantic features. The proverbs documentation (in the Pagu language is known as o demo ma daili, lit: ‘language of examining’) is expected to help revitalizing this endangered language. There are 23 'proverbs' collected during a fieldwork in June 2013 to several villages, in which the inhabitants speak Pagu language. This study found that simile and metaphor are the most common features of Pagu proverbs (eleven and six consecutively). Simile describes the similarity between two things, which is overtly marked by the use of soka ‘like’. Meanwhile, metaphor is comparing without comparative words. Keywords: proverbs, simile, metaphor

Abstract

Abstract This paper argues that both urban and cyber activisms play significant roles in the labour movements in Indonesia after the reformation 1998. Exploring Federasi Serikat Pekerja Metal Indonesia (FSPMI)-Indonesian Metalworkers’ Federation, this paper is aimed at a better understanding of the interdependencies between the urban and cyber spaces for labour movements. More specific, how do labours engage in cyber-urban activism to establish their movements in order to gain their political leverages? Results highlight four issues: (a) the growing of militant labour movement in the recent urban space; (b) the emergence of urban industrial working class; (c) cyber-urban space is a political terrain for the state, the corporate, and the labours; and (d) one side of cyber-urban connection can generate, strengthen, weaken, or even kill the other side. Keywords: FSPMI, labour, movement, cyber, urban, activism Abstrak Tulisan ini berpendapat bahwa aktivisme perkotaan maupun maya sama-sama memiliki peran penting dalam gerakan buruh di Indonesia setelah reformasi 1998.
