Abstract

Lignocellulosic waste from oil palm industry is a potential versatile resource. It can be used as raw material of bio-composite, pulp and paper, bioenergy, and many chemicals products.  The aimed of this research was to investigate the characteristics of particleboard from oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) bonded with phenol formaldehyde (PF)-fortified oil palm EFB liquid adhesive.  Fortification level of EFB liquid was varied at 5, 10, and 15%. The adhesive level of 10, 15, and 20% were used for particleboard manufactures with target density of 0.7 g cm-3. The particleboard quality was evaluated based on its physical (density, moisture content, thickness swelling) and mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, internal bonding, and screw holding resistant) according to JIS standard. In order to improve bonding quality, the EFB particles was treated by hot water at 100 oC for 6 h.  The results showed that the quality of particleboard increased by addition of fortifier as well as adhesive level, except for thickness swelling. The best particleboard properties was produced with 20% adhesive level and 15% fortifier, however, physical and mechanical properties of most particleboard produced did not satisfy the JIS A 5908:2003 requirement. Keywords: empty fruit bunch, fortifier, liquid adhesive, oil palm, particleboard, phenol formaldehyde

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the extractive substances of heartwood of Kupa wood (Syzygium polycephalum (Mig)) and its potention as bio-active substance to wood destroying fungi i.e., Schizophyllum commune Fr and Pleurotus sp. Successive extraction method was used in this experiment. The heartwood part was then converted into 40 mesh wood flour and followed by extraction using methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-hexane and buthanol solvents. The extractives obtained were subjected to wood destroying fungi S. commune and Pleurotus sp. The results indicated that the extractive content of S. polychephalum mostly dominated by substance diluted in chloroform (2.87%), followed by ethyl acetate (0.38%), n-hexane (0.33%) and buthanol (0.05%). All the wood extracts of S. polychephalum potentially contain anti-fungal compound to inhibit the growth of S. commune Fr and Pleurotus sp fungi. N-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts of S. polychephalum are the most active extracts. Isolation of ethyl acetate fraction resulted in nine (9) active compounds (G.1-G.9) that could inhibit the growth both S. commune and Pleurotus sp with IC(50) values 49.33-61.71 ppm and 48.84-64.61 ppm, respectively. It was found that G.2 compound of ethyl acetate has anti fungal substance namely 3-O-glucosyl-3’,4’ 5-trihydroxyflavonol.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the performance of enzymatic hydrolysis on lime pretreated jabon wood (Anthocephalus cadamba Miq). Proceeding hydrolysis process, the morphology and crystallinity changes of pretreated jabon were also examined. In the present study, jabon wood meal was put into digester and then lime was loaded at varied lime loading, i.e. at 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 g Ca(OH)2 g-1 of dry biomass in 90 ml of water. The slurry was then homogenized and heated in the oil bath at 100, 125 and 150 C for 2, 4 and 6 hours. Enzymatic hydrolysis was performed in accordance to the NREL procedures using a cellulase enzyme. The enzyme loading variation was 10, 20 and 40 FPU g-1 of the substrate. the RSY of pretreated jabon increased up to 9.7 folds from that of its control. The highest RSY was obtained for pretreatment with 0.5 g Ca(OH)2 g-1 dried biomass at 150 °C for 4 hours and hydrolyzed with 40 FPU of cellulase (118 mg equivalent glucose g-1 dry biomass). This yield was comparable with 14.4% More than a third of the lignin and hemicellulose content (45.83 and 65.52%) were degraded by lime pretreatment. Keywords: enzymatic hydrolysis, jabon wood, lime pretreatment, reducing sugar yield

Abstract

The development of paper and pulp industry cause waste handling problem. A kind of waste that needs serious attention is sludge. Sludge handling by burning causes air pollution problem, while land filling need much more infestations and areas. Therefore, composting believed as the most effective way to handle sludge. The objective of this research is to increase sludge product utility and to know quality of compost charcoal from sludge. The materials used are sludge from PT Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper Tangerang, Banten, saw dust, saw dust charcoal, and particular bio- activators called OrgaDec were used to stimulate the decomposition of those materials. The methods used are total carbon, nitrogen, phosphor (P2O5), kalium (K2O), magnesium (MgO), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and total Calcium (CaO). The best composting pH and temperature is treatment without charcoal addition. The treatment made pH and temperature goes down by charcoal addition. Analysis quality of compost charcoal show that charcoal addition will cause increasing of CEC and decreasing C/N ratio.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to analyze the physical and mechanical properties of con block and paving block composites made from rice husk. Cement and aggregate ratio for con block and paving block were set at 1:6, 1:8, 1:10, and 1:4, 1:6, respectively. The content of rice husk ash in aggregate was varied from 0 to 60%. The physical and mechanical properties of concrete composite were evaluated. The results indicated that with or without rice husk ash addition, the higher the portion of aggregate added resulted in the lower the density and compression strength of con block and paving block. The higher the portion of rice husk ash added also resulted in the lower the density and compression strength of con block and paving block. Addition of rice husk up to 40% on the cement and aggregate mixtures with ratio of 1:6 resulted in con block composite with B2 grade. Addition of rice husk up to 60% on the cement and aggregate mixture with ratio of 1:4 resulted in paving block composite with 2nd state.Key words: building material, compression strength, con block, paving block, rice husk

Abstract

In the present experiments, the fibrillated bleached pulp of acacia (Acacia mangium) was used as reinforcing filler in the poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix resin.  Fibrillation processes of the pulp involved the use of disc refiner, ultraturrax (UT) and ultrasonicator (US). The composite film of PVA and 1% fibrillated pulp was prepared through film casting method. The morphology of fibrillated pulp was observed under SEM and the tensile properties (i.e. tensile strength, elongation at break and Young’s modulus) of the composites were determined by the use of universal testing machine (UTM). It was found that 30 cycles disc refining of the pulp proceeded with 10 min US treatment resulted in a fiber diameter of approximately 8.35 μm.  PVA and fibrillated bleached pulp composites was transparent with thickness and density of 0.07-0.19 and 1.1-1.3 g cm-3, respectively. The Young’s modulus of the composites with 30 cycles disk refining of the pulp was much higher (122.7 Nm m-2) compared to that of pure PVA film (66.4 Nm m-2). The tensile strength of PVA and fibrillated bleached pulp composites and pure PVA was unchanged. Key words: Acacia mangium, film casting, mechanical fibrillation, mechanical properties, morphology

Abstract

Wood from plantation forests can be used to make glued laminated lumber (glulam) products for structural applications. Wood from two species, namely pine (Pinus merkusii) and jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba), and polyurethane and tannin mahogany adhesives (glue spread 200 g m-2) were used to manufacture glulams. The aim of this research was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of glulam made from pine and jabon woods. Wood densities of pine and jabon were 0.71 and 0.43 g cm-3, respectively. The glulams consisted of three layers of the same wood species, and samples were (3×6×120) cm3 in thickness, width, and length, respectively. The physical and mechanical properties of glulam were tested according to Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) 234-2007. The results showed that glulam made from pine met the standard for modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture (MOR) values. Glulam made from jabon wood fulfilled the standard for MOR, shear strength, and hot- and cold-water delamination tests. In the formaldehyde emission test, jabon glulam fulfilled the F*** (low emission) standard and pine glulam met the F**** (very low emission) standard according to JAS 234-2007.

Abstract

Previous research showed that n-hexane extract of Pinus oocarpa resin was the most potential extract among extracts of Pinus resin from Indonesia as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. The purpose of this study were to separate the active antibacterial component of n-hexane P. oocarpa resin extract and characterize the functional groups of its most active fractions. The component were separated by silica gel column chromatography and detected by antibacterial bioautography method. Fraction F1 is the most active from 11 fractions. Furthermore, F1 separated further by preparative thin layer chromatography and sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Three fractions (F1.1.1-F1.1.3) retrieved from the separation by sephadex LH-20 column. Furthermore F1.1.2 had the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of 125 and 250 µg ml-1 respectively against S. aureus by microdilution method. Characterization of fraction F1.1.2 using Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer shows that this fraction allegedly containing diterpenoid compounds.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the effect of Ethephon, an ethylene releasing compound, in a combination with sulfuric acid resin production Pinus merkusii.  The tested stimulants were ETRAT; SR4; 20% sulfuric acid; 20% sulfuric acid - Ethephon 2%; 3.3% sulfuric acid – 4.1% Ethephon; and sulfuric acid – 8.3% Ethephon. Trees without stimulant spraying were the controls. The results showed that for daily production, the first-day observation gave the highest value but decreased drastically after second-day observation in a varied degree depent on the stimulants. On the basis of accumulated production, the addition of Ethephon in a high or low level of sulfuric acid concentration exhibited significantly higher resin production compared to that of ETRAT; SR4; and 20% sulfuric acid stimulants as well as control trees. It increased resin production by 98.0-150.6% compared to control trees in class age of VII and increased by 140.9-227.1% in class age of IV stands. Moderate significant correlations (r=0.65) were observed between the values of resin production and tree diameter (controls) as well as between the values of resin production and tree diameter of trees treated by sulfuric acid stimulants (r=0.65-0.82).
