Abstract

In this article, I explore male writers’ attitudes towards corruption and women in fairy tales and detective novels, by means of hermeneutically scrutinising works of Zheng Yuanjie, the illustrious ‘King of Fairy Tales’, as well as Zijin Chen, the ‘Chinese Keigo Higashino’. Anti-corruption is a prevalent and preponderant theme in both writers’ creation, yet their depictions of barbarous extrajudicial punishment for government officials’ misdeeds allude to karmic retribution and are prone to expatiation in graphic detail. Therefore, some of their fiction appertaining to anti-corruption can be regarded as ‘feel-good writing’ in essence. Furthermore, the writing of Zheng and Chen is sometimes featured by lack of feminist consciousness, in that a proportion of their works manifest gender stereotypes, which can also be attested in other male writers’ fairy tales and detective novels.

Abstract

This paper discusses gender stereotyping represented in two selected picture books, My Little Book of Stories for Girls and My Little Book of Stories for Boys by Brown Watson (2012). The verbal and visual texts were examined to reveal the symbolical meanings of gender stereotyping which then argued by using Judith Butler’s gender performativity. The analysis results in a clear distinction between the performances of female and male characters. By separating female and male characters into completely different categorizations through their appearances, traits, and behavior, the first picture book represents feminine gender stereotypes that females are princesses who stay in the palace while the second represents masculine gender stereotypes that males are outdoor working individuals.

After analyzing those articles with AntConc (a corpus-based analyzing tool), it was found that there are 341 passive voice occurrences in Indonesian research articles. However, in the translated abstract corpus, TERA-HT there are 308 occurrences and in TERA MT with 321 occurrences. Besides the differences in the frequency, there are also some differences in linguistics feature of passive in the translated abstracts, such as 1) The difference in using tenses; 2) The differences in using “Be (Singular/Plural); 3) the difference in using the passive voice construction and 4) Modulation (the change of Passive voice into Active voice). This research also reports that human translation is better than machine translation.

Abstract

As a movement that has held an important position in the humanities for the past few decades, eco-criticism or environmental-oriented literature needs to promote a better understanding of nature more broadly. That is, ecocriticism must distinguish itself from writings on the environment in general, namely by presenting a narrative showing that humans need to have a sense of attachment to nature, as well as by presenting a narrative showing that the world of humans and the world of non-humans needs to be positioned equally. In the novel The Bear (2020) by Andrew Krivak, the voice of equality between humans and nature is the dominant issue. Using the human ecology concept from Philip J. Stewart as a key concept, this study aims to describe how human fragility and natural domination presented in the novel The Bear (2020) support the idea of human ecology, as well as how human ecologyvoiced in the novel The Bear (2020) criticizes the view of anthropocentrism which believes that humans are the center of life. This study shows that the voice of human ecology in the novel The Bear (2020) which is presented through human fragility, natural domination, to criticism of the anthropocentrism view offers the idea of a balance between humans and nature. The balance in question is a condition in which humans and nature return to an equal position, where neither one of them is harmed.
