Abstract

Abstract

This paper examined effects of computer assisted task based listening learning (CATBLL) on students’ listening skills development. The participants were freshman students of Adama Science and Technology University in 2019/2020 academic year. The experimental group was treated with computer assisted task based listening skills instruction approach while conventional method was employed for control group. Teacher made tests and students’ self-reflection journal were the data collection instruments used in this study. For the analyses of numerical data, paired sample t-test and independent samples t-test were computed. Qualitative analyses were done for the data obtained through students’ self-reflection journal. Based on the findings, the proposed approach resulted in a strong and significant effect on students’ listening skills development. A statistically significant difference was confirmed between the experimental group and the control group in terms of their listening achievement score. The results of qualitative analyses depict that the majority of the students in computer assisted group showed positive feeling towards the approach; they also reflected that they relatively improved their listening skills. This implies that computer assisted task based listening skills learning approach appeared to facilitate individual learning, and increase students’ concentration. Thus, one can conclude that computer assisted task based listening skills learning approach facilitated students’ listening skills development than the conventional one. Abstract

This study aims at investigating the interlanguage production by Indonesian EFL students in their English compositions. Interlanguage describes the language produced by second or foreign language learners when learning the target language. Forty college students majoring in English for tourism industry were the subjects in this study. In collecting the data, the students were asked to write a recount text with a topic "an experience of visiting a hotel” through a guided writing exercise. The framework of error analysis and interlanguage analysis were used in analyzing the data. The result shows that the students’ interlanguage production is influenced by both Indonesian language as their native language (NL) and English as the target language (TL). The influences were found in both lexical and grammatical forms. This study implies that in learning a foreign language, errors are made by students and by knowing the errors, teachers and tutors can apply appropriate strategies and materials to enhance learning.

Abstract

This paper discusses gender stereotyping represented in two selected picture books, My Little Book of Stories for Girls and My Little Book of Stories for Boys by Brown Watson (2012). The verbal and visual texts were examined to reveal the symbolical meanings of gender stereotyping which then argued by using Judith Butler’s gender performativity. The analysis results in a clear distinction between the performances of female and male characters. By separating female and male characters into completely different categorizations through their appearances, traits, and behavior, the first picture book represents feminine gender stereotypes that females are princesses who stay in the palace while the second represents masculine gender stereotypes that males are outdoor working individuals.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Translation is the process of transferring a message from one language to another with consideration to the equivalence. In the practice of translation, forms may change. The practice of translation should be done on the basis of linguistic theories as tools. Since the translator is concerned exclusively and continuously with meaning, it is not surprising that Halidayan linguistics which sees language primarily as a meaning potential should offer itself as a serviceable tool for determining the constituent part of a source language text network of relations with its translation. Therefore, this research will identify the translation technique through the information structure theories (Theme-Rheme) and its readability in BabyShark StoryBook Series. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data collection was conducted by using observation and note-taking techniques. Ten young children became target readers for the assessment to the readability of the translated text. The results show that the Theme-Rheme analysis can lead to find the translation techniques which were applied. They are Modulation, Transposition, Reduction and Amplification. The data reported here appear to support the assumption that the translator applied linguistic simplification and over explicitation in order to children fully grasp the text. Keywords:translation, theme-rheme, translation technique, readability
