Abstract

In this article, I explore male writers’ attitudes towards corruption and women in fairy tales and detective novels, by means of hermeneutically scrutinising works of Zheng Yuanjie, the illustrious ‘King of Fairy Tales’, as well as Zijin Chen, the ‘Chinese Keigo Higashino’. Anti-corruption is a prevalent and preponderant theme in both writers’ creation, yet their depictions of barbarous extrajudicial punishment for government officials’ misdeeds allude to karmic retribution and are prone to expatiation in graphic detail. Therefore, some of their fiction appertaining to anti-corruption can be regarded as ‘feel-good writing’ in essence. Furthermore, the writing of Zheng and Chen is sometimes featured by lack of feminist consciousness, in that a proportion of their works manifest gender stereotypes, which can also be attested in other male writers’ fairy tales and detective novels.

The research data were the scores obtained from the validity and reliability testing and from the implementation of the instrument to measure the students’ critical thinking skill, from class observation and interview with the teacher, which were analyzed using the descriptive statistics. The results are (1) the adapted instrument to measure students’ critical thinking skill has a quite high validity (in interpreting, analyzing, and regulating) and high validity (in concluding, evaluating, and explaining). The reliability testing shows that the instrument is highly reliable with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.634; and (2) the implementation of the instrument shows that 5% of the students have a high critical thinking skill, 14% high, 45% medium, and 36% low. The degree of critical thinking skill is described respectively: interpreting (48%), analyzing (51%), concluding (14%), evaluating (45%), explaining (74%), and self-regulating (56%). Thus, intensive efforts to increase students’ critical thinking skill must be done through the Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

Research on foreign language anxiety among Indonesian learners of English has gained some attention thus far. However, few studies have examined specifically English listening anxiety of Indoensian speakers. Previous research in other countries has suggested a number of variables contributing to the foreign language anxiety. Taking into consideration some of the factors that are distinctive for Indonesian learners’ contexts, this present study aims to find out the relationship between number of languages learned or acquired by the learners, gender of the learners, the learners’ English self-rating proficiency, and length of residence of the learners in the target language country with L2 listening anxiety of Indonesian learners of English. This study involved Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Scale (FLLAS) data that were obtained from 109 Indonesian university students and were analyzed quantitatively using Pearson’s correlation, Spearman’s rho, and one-way ANOVAs. The finding shows that there is a significant negative correlation between Indonesian learners of English listening anxiety with the learners’ length of residence in the target language country and the learners’ English self-rating proficiency.  The significant difference in terms of length of residence in the target language country especially lied in between the no residence group and <1-year group, and between no residence group and >1 year. In the English self-rating, the significant difference lied in between Intermediate and advanced groups.

Abstract

Two questions are to answer as the basis for data analysis and discussion, namely: (i) does English gerund belong to nominalization or verbalization?; and (ii) why do EFL learners in Indonesia academically need to understand the morpho-semantic properties of the English gerunds? The data presented and analyzed in this paper were collected by means of a short-limited research in the form of library study and supported by writers’ experience as the lecturers of English Grammar and Linguistics. The data analysis and discussion are based on relevant linguistic theories of morpho-syntactic properties of gerunds and those which belong to the principles of Pedagogical Grammar of EFL. The result of data analysis reveals that gerund in English is both nominalization and verbalization with certain morpho-semantic characteristics. As English gerunds are practically productive and linguistically unique, the EFL learners in Indonesia undoubtedly need the linguistic-grammatical knowledge and they are proceeded to have the ability to use gerunds grammatically. The idea delivered through this paper is believed as a significant note for EFL learners, particularly in Indonesia.
