Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of interference ofMalay language on the Indonesian language;the analysis of phonology, morphology, and syntaxonthe students’ communication patterns at UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim, Riau. This is a field research study. The research was conducted on students majoring in Ibtidaiyah Madrasah Teacher Education at UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim by taking students’ communication patterns.Having takentheir communication pattern, the students are interviewed repeatedly to identify Malay language interference. In this case, there are several interferences found: Interference in the phonology and lexical field, which are divided into noun word class, verb word class, adjective word class, and pronoun word class.Interference in the grammatical field comprises interference in the field of morphology and syntax. Interference in the field of morphology includes affixation and repetition. The last, interference in the syntactic fieldinvolves the use of particles and phrase construction patterns.

Abstract

And is generally known as a connector which relates parallel information or ideas. In the discourse contexts, and is used differently. This article presents the discourse functions of and as a discourse marker in the presentations made by Australian students in academic settings. It was identified that and has four different discourse functions: i) linking events within a discourse topic; ii) introducing a new topic; iii) signalling a summary; and iv) signalling a speaker’s retaking a turn.

Abstract

Communication strategies have been discussed by many linguists and researchers for ages. They described types of communication strategies employed by a particular person when he/she had problems in communicating with others. It seems that communication strategies are only employed for those who have lack knowledge of English. However, the fact still reveals that people who have good English also perform types of communication strategies. This article then aims at proving that communication strategies are also employed by speakers who are capable enough in English.

Abstract

This article is a development research that aims to develop teaching-based writing materials in the process of producing a genre in the form of exposition hortatory. In this study also estimated the level of validity, practicality and effectiveness of teaching materials developed. This research method is done in four stages; definition, design, development and limited deployment; on the students of grade XI IPA 2 SMA Adabiah Padang. After the stages of dissemination is limited, measured product practicability and product effectiveness to the value of student writing. Development results show the validity of the product contained in the category can be used with the improvement with a value of 77.4. Practicality of the product is stated at the value of 88.77 and the effectiveness at the value of 80%. It can be concluded that the product can be used as teaching teaching material.

Abstract

One effect of the development communication and technology is infinite space and time in doing communication. In the past, written communication was done by using letter, but nowadays communication can be done quickly, easily and cost-effective one. It could be done by using SMS (Short Massage Service). However, it shows the reality of the absence of a clear convention about how to write SMS text creating a style of language, especially among English students of UMMY Solok. Based on the observations and interviews, the writer found that the number of lectureres complained about the contents of SMS text messages sent by students primarily in asking permission to lecturers. This coupled with the increasingly widespread slang languange often used by students. This indicates that the language used in students’ SMS requested permission from the lecturers are still having problems. The aim of this study was to analyze the style of language used in SMS while student requested permission from lecturers and in order to find out lecturers’ respond to the SMS. This research is a descriptive study that takes data from SMS text English department students that have been collected during one semester semester 2014/2015. Data were also obtained based on the interview to the English language lecturer. This study is expected to be the basis of empirical how ethical language student asked permission in the use of SMS medium to  lecturers and also gives contribution to the development of instructional media, especially in English corespondence subject for English Department. Abstract

This study investigated the levels and types of writing anxiety and writing strategies used by 3rd year English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The participants of this study were 41 students. This descriptive quantitative study used two questionnaires as the instrument. The first questionnaire was SLWAI (Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory) by Cheng (2002) used to obtain the levels and types of writing anxiety. The writing strategies used by the participant were obtained from the second questionnaire namely Writing Strategy Scale developed by Raoofi et.al. (2017). The study found that the 3rdyear students of Universitas Negeri Padang experienced moderate level of writing anxiety with cognitive anxiety as the main type. The studey also found that the most used writing strategies were affective and metacognitive strategy.Key words/phrases: levels of writing anxiety, types of writing anxiety, writing strategies AbstrakArtikel ini bertujuan untuk menemukan level dan tipe kecemasan dalam menulis dan strategi menulis yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa tahun ketiga Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Negeri Padang. 41 siswa dipilih sebagai responden dari penelitian ini. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif. Data didapakan dari membagikan 2 kuesioner. Kuesioner pertama yaitu SLWAI (Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory) dari Cheng (2002) digunakan untuk mengetahui level dan tipe kecemasan responden. Kuisioner kedua yaitu Writing Strategy Scale dari Raoofi dkk (2017) digunakan untuk mengetahui strategi menulis yang digunakan responden. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa responden mengalami kecemasan menulis dalam tingkat yang menengah, dengan tipe kognitif sebagai tipe yang mendominasi. Dari penelitian ini juga diketahui bahwa responden berada di level yang tinggi dalam penggunaan strategi menulis. Abstract

This study is aimed at applying Haliday’s theory of textual function in writing editorials of “Haluan” daily newspaper. The theory says that unmarked theme tends to be used if a newspaper’s editorial shows an agreement with certain issues widely spread throughout the community. Meanwhile, marked theme is mostly used when a newspaper’s editorial shows disagreement with certain issues. This study takes 10 editorial texts of “Haluan” daily newspaper as the source of data. These editorials were published from May to July 2006. Based on the findings, 8 out of 10 editorials use marked theme as the most dominant theme type, while the other two editorials use unmarked theme most frequently. These findings show that both theme types are used in Haluan’s editorials. It is also found that Haliday’s theory is applied in writing editorials of “Haluan”: unmarked theme shows an agreement, while marked theme indicates a disagreement. Nevertheless, in some editorials, Haliday’s theory is not applied.

Abstract

This article discusses on how teachers build and establish the harmonious environment between them and their students. This term is called as rapport. The writer has collected some theories from some experts about how to establish rapport in the language classroom. In the line with the experts opinions, it is very important for teachers to maintan the rapport in their classroom. Understanding rapport in more depth, it can be said that it has to do with appreciating where other people are coming from, understanding their point of view and seeking to develop and maintain a connection with them. It is suggested that teachers can apply the strategies given in this articles because by doing so teachers can take benefit of establishing rapport from their class room. The strategies to establish rapport in language classroom are: getting to know the students both inside and outside of the classroom, learning student names as quickly as possible, considering non-verbal factors such as body language, developing a relationship built on trust, having a sense of humor and having fun with students

Abstract

The subject of “Translation” is commonly found in the curriculum of English Departments of many universities. This suggests the significance of translation as a targeted competence of the students in the parts of educators and curriculum-makers. As a competence, the skill and ability to translate is deemed important in today’s globalizing world where people of different languages and cultures search to meaningfully interact each other. And yet, what is much needed is efforts to create effective methods of teaching “Translation,” which includes among others the creation of class syllabus of “Translation” that connects a good mastery of linguistic, translation, and cultural theoretical aspects with translation practices and that bridges the factual needs for translation with the interest and talent of students. The data for this article were accumulated from teachers and practitioners of translation. The former refers to university lecturers who studied translation for their degrees. The practitioners are full-fledged members of Indonesian Translator Association (HPI). This guarantees the validity and solidity of the data. One finding this article presents is that in order to be effective the subject of “Translation” should contain a mix of approximately 40:60 of theoretical discussion and practice of translation. With this mix, as exemplified by the syllabus this article presents, the students are introduced to both declarative (know-what) and procedural (know-how) competences related of the field of translation. And with these, the students effectively learn to become a well-round translator.Key words: teaching methods, theoretical discussion, translation practicePENGEMBANGAN METODE PENGAJARAN “TRANSLATION” YANG EFEKTIFAbstrakMata kuliah “Translation” lazim dijumpai di dalam kurikulum Jurusan Bahasa Inggris di banyak universitas. Hal ini mengisyaratkan kesadaran pihak pendidik dan pembuat kurikulum menyangkut signifikansi penerjemahan sebagai salah satu kompetensi yang diharapkan dikuasai oleh mahasiswa. Sebagai kompetensi, keterampilan dan kemampuan untuk menerjemahkan dipandang penting dalam dunia yang mengglobal dewasa ini, di mana orang dari berbagai bahasa dan budaya yang berbeda berinteraksi secara bermakna. Meskipun demikian, yang sangat dibutuhkan adalah upaya untuk menyusun metode pengajaran “Translation” yang efektif, yang antara lain mencakup penyusunan silabus “Translation” yang mengaitkan pemahaman akan aspek-aspek teoritis kebahasaan, penerjemahan, dan budaya dengan praktik atau latihan penerjemahan dan yang menjembatani kebutuhan faktual akan penerjemahan dengan minat dan talenta mahasiswa. Data untuk artikel ini diperoleh dari para pengajar dan praktisi penerjemahan. Yang disebut pertama merujuk kepada para dosen yang secara formal belajar ilmu penerjemahan. Sementara itu, praktisi penerjemahan merujuk kepada anggota-anggota penuh Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia (HPI). Ini menjamin bahwa data untuk artikel ini valid dan solid. Satu temuan yang dikemukakan oleh artikel ini adalah bahwa agar pengajaran “Translation” efektif diperlukan paduan antara diskusi teoritis dan latihan penerjemahan dengan rasio sekitar 40:60. Dengan paduan ini, sebagaimana dicontohkan oleh silabus yang juga disertakan di sini, mahasiswa diperkenalkan pada kompetensi deklaratif (paham-apanya) dan prosedural (tahu-bagaimananya) dari dunia penerjemahan. Dan dengan ini, mereka secara efektif dapat belajar menjadi penerjemah yang andal.Kata kunci: metode pengajaran, diskusi teoritis, praktik penerjemahan

Abstract

This research is to explain sexsual attitude of women character in novel Tuhan, Izinkan Aku Menjadi Pelacur! written by Muhidin M Dahlan, and to explain behavior of women character in novel Tuhan, Izinkan Aku Menjadi Pelacur! written by Muhidin M Dahlan. This is a content analysis research which uses descriptive method and qualitative approach. The objects of this research are phenomenon of attitude and behavior toward sexsual of women character. The data of this research are taken from novel Tuhan, Izinkan Aku Menjadi Pelacur! written by Muhidin M Dahlan. Triangulation technique is used to validate and to make data reliable. The findings of this research are description of sexsual attitude related to value, religion and human activity. Sexsual attitude to related to religion dominate or described more through character of Nidah Kirani. The writer freely uses women character (Nidah Kirani) to express his perception. This sexsual attitude  toward religion often appear caused by disappointment of Nidah Kirani to her god. Socrifation and struggling done by  Nidah Kirani are only to improve faith and ketakwaan to the god. But in the middle of story, she was trapped of disappointment. The finding of the research related to sexsual attitude shows free sex done by character Nidah Kirani. Struggling and sacrifation done are to be a real moslem who holds totally kaffah. free sex is shown in her rebel to her god. Every thing Nidah Kirani gets from man related to sex drives her to be a bitch.
