Abstract

This article reveals an alternative model for teaching reading comprehension at junior high school. This model is a combination of ‘interactive mdel’ and ‘cognitive mode’. The discussion covers two levels of  reading comprehension: the lowest level (literal comprehension) and the highest level (evaluation and appreciation). There are four trainings given dealing  with these levels; (1) literal comprehension training, (2) inferential comprehension training, (3) evaluation training, and (4) appreciation training. The last coverage of this article is about the advantages of proposed model. This model is designed and hopefully will be useful for language teachers who are training or planning to train learners to have good reading comprehension strategies, particularly at junior high school .

Abstract

This research aims to know how the acquisition of Indonesian deixis for 2.5 years child (a case study on the results of mixed marriages). The deixis that would be uncovered are (1) temporal deixis, (2) locative deixis, (3), persona deixis, and (4) demonstrative deixis. The result of study shows that in general, it can be concluded that Diana has not been able to master deixis overall. Some deixis have been understood but she cannot exactly mention them correctly, for example, temporal, personal, and demonstrative locative deixis. Diana has master deixis demonstrative 'that' in understanding and producing it compared with others. Diana was able to answer questions asked by his father in German, although she cannot speak German, as he speaks Indonesian.

Abstract

AbstractThis research analysed the utterance used in Ludruk, a traditional art originated from East Java. The utterance were used in accordance with the story performed by the artists. This article describes the category of illocution, function, and the purpose of the illocution in the Ludruk Joko Sambang Pendekar Gunung Gangsir showed in Kediri on 2017 by a group of East Java Ludruk artists. The research is descriptive qualitative identifying the illocution speech acts in the Ludruk. Research data are the containing speech act in the Ludruk artists’ dialogue. Data analysis technique is conducted systematically as follows: (1) Transcribing the utterance and translating the Java language into Indonesia language, (2) Categorizing the data, included the illocution utterance, (3) Analyzing data, how the context, function and its purpose. It is found four utterances categories, namely: (1) Assertive category of complaining, suggesting, fulminating, stating, and revealing mode; (2) Expressive category of giving advice, and requesting; (3) Commissive mode category of offering and promising; (4) Expressive mode category of thanking and fulminating. The declarative category is not found in the Ludruk show utterance.  Based on the classification of realization is also found that each utterance has a function to persuade the hearer to do something based on context.Keywords/phrases: pragmatics, illocution speech act, ludrukTINDAK TUTUR ILOKUSI PADA PEMENTASAN LUDRUK JOKO SAMBANG PENDEKAR GUNUNG GANGSIRAbstrakPenelitian ini menganalisa ujaran yang digunakan dalam Ludruk, kesenian tradisional yang berasal dari Jawa Timur. Tuturan digunakan sesuai dengan konteks cerita yang dimainkan oleh para pemeran. Artikel ini mendeskripsikan kategori tuturan ilokusi, fungsi, dan maksud dari ilokusi pada pementasan Ludruk lakon  Joko Sambang Pendekar Gunung Gangsir yang dipentaskan di Kediri tahun 2017 oleh kumpulan seniman ludruk Jawa Timur.Penelitian ini termasuk dalam penelitian deskriptif kulitatif dengan objek penelitian tindak tutur ilokusi yang dituturkan oleh pemain ludruk. Data penelitian berupa ujaran yang terdapat pada dialog pemain ludruk yang mengandung tindak tutur ilokusi. Teknik analisis data dilakukan secara terstruktur, yaitu dengan langkah sebagai berikut: (1) mentraskripsi data dan menerjemahkan ujaran dari bahasa Jawa ke dalam bahasa Indonesia, (2) mengelompokan data yang telah diperoleh, termasuk pada kategori  tuturan ilokusi, (3) menganalisis tiap kategori data yang telah terkumpul, bagaimana konteks, maksud dan fungsinya. Ditemukan empat  kategori tuturan, yakni: (1) Kategori asertif dengan modus mengeluh, mengusulkan, mengecam, menyatakan, mengungkapkan; (2) Kategori ekspresif  dengan modus menasihati, dan memerintah; (3) Kategori komisif modus yang muncul menawarkan, menjanjikan; (4) Kategori ekspresif modus yang muncul  terima kasih dan mengecam. Kategori deklaratif tidak ditemukan pada tuturan pementasan ludruk tersebut. Berdasarkan klasifikasi mengenai relisasijuga ditemukan bahwa setiap tuturan tersebut memiliki fungsi untuk mempengaruhi mitra tutur untuk melakukan tindakan sesuatu yang sesuai dengan konteksnya.Kata Kunci/frase: pragmatik, tindak tutur ilokusi, ludruk

Abstract

The study is aimed at investigating the way the participants develop the topics in chatting, synchronous computer mediated interaction.  Data were obtained from lobbies of several chatrooms at yahoo.com. The findings revealed that the topic being developed by the participants did not necessarily in line with the topic prescribed by administrator of each room. The newly joined participants marked the introduction of the topic using metacomment while the current participants introduce the topic apruptly. The closing of the topic tend to be aprupt when the participants move to the other topic or sub topic newly introduced. The relational closeness between topics showed that the topic digressed fastly and there were no return to the previously discussed topics. Topic development in chat might produce linier and parallel sequences. Linier sequences appeared when the participants discuss one topic at one time while parallel sequences appeared when several sub-topic discussed together at the same time. Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh seringnya siswa mengeluh bahwa pembelajaran di kelas kurang menyenangkan. Salah satu penyebab masalah itu adalah guru belum menggunakan strategi bertutur secara baik dalam proses pembelajaran. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripksikan dan menjelaskan strategi bertutur, konteks situasi tutur penggunaan setiap strategi bertutur, dampak penggunaan strategi bertutur terhadap kejelasan maksud penutur, dan dampak penggunaan strategi bertutur itu terhadap kesantunan berbahasa guru dalam proses pembelajaran  di SMP Perguruan Islam Ar-Risalah  Padang.Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Data penelitian berupa rekaman tindak tutur dan hasil pengamatan tindak tutur yang dilakukan oleh siswa Ar-Risalah, dan hasil wawancara dengan guru dan siswa di SMP Perguruan Islam Ar-Risalah Padang. Analisis data dilakukan dengan mengikuti model Miles dan Huberman, yaitu pengumpulan data, reduksi, penyajian, dan kesimpulan tentang temuan penelitian.     Berdasarkan temuan penelitian dan pembahasan disimpulkan sebagai berikut ini. Strategi bertutur guru dalam proses pembelajaran di SMP Perguruan Islam Ar-Risalah Padang adalah strategi bertutur terus-terang tanpa basa-basi (BTTB), strategi bertutur terus-terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan positif (BTBKP), strategi bertutur terus-terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan negatif (BTBKN), dan strategi bertutur samar-samar (BS). Dari keempat strategi bertutur yang disukai oleh siswa adalah strategi bertutur terus terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan positif dan strategi bertutur terus terang dengan basa-basi kesantunan negatif. Penggunaan strategi BTTB dan BTBKP berdampak atau mengakibatkan makna tindak tutur menjadi jelas. Penggunaan strategi BTBKN dan BS berdampak atau mengakibatkan makna tindak tutur kurang jelas. Penggunaan strategi BTTB dan BTBKP berdampak atau mengakibatkan makna tindak tutur terasa santun dalam konteks masalah yang dibicarakan tidak sensitif dan dalam suasana akrab atau humor. Penggunaan strategi BTBKN dan BS berdampak santun dalam konteks suasana resmi dan kurang akrab.

Abstract

ANALISIS KESALAHAN KARYA TERJEMAHAN PELAJAR INDONESIA DARI BAHASA INDONESIA KE BAHASA MANDARIN AbstractAs China and Indonesia have developed stronger partnership in economics and business, the demand for Chinese-Indonesian bilinguals is increasing. Higher education institutions should answer this demand by providing proficient bilinguals, who would provide a fine translation work. In the process of translation, the translator is demanded to transfer the content from source language (SL) into target language (TL), while obeying the structure of the TL itself. In the process of translating from L1 to L2, the translator might not have problems in understanding the information presented in the SL text, which is his/her L1, but might have difficulties in transferring the information into the TL text, which is his/her L2, especially if the translator him/herself has not reached a high level of L2 proficiency. To understand the difficulties of acquiring L2 and producing fine translation in L2, the writer would conduct an error analysis in the learners’ translation works. The participants of this research are Chinese department’s senior students. The purpose of this research is to find out the influence of learners’ L1 in L1 to L2 translation, define the causes and thus provide suggestion on how to minimize the negative transfer of L1 in the translation learning process.Keywords: Translation, Second Language Acquisition, Error Analysis, Chinese Language LearningAbstrakSeiring dengan perkembangan hubungan ekonomi dan bisnis antara Tiongkok dan Indonesia, permintaan terhadap dwibahasawan Mandarin dan Indonesia juga ikut meningkat. Institusi pendidikan tinggi harus menjawab tantangan ini dengan menyediakan dwibahasawan yang handal, yang mampu menghasilkan karya terjemahan yang berkualitas. Dalam proses penerjemahan, penerjemah dituntut untuk mengalihbahasakan isi dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran, dengan mematuhi kaidah bahasa sasaran. Dalam proses penerjemahan dari bahasa pertama (B1) ke bahasa kedua (B2), penerjemah tidak akan mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami teks dalam bahasa sumber, tetapi kemungkinan akan mengalami kesulitan saat mengalihbahasakan teks tersebut ke dalam bahasa sasaran, yang merupakan B2, terutama jika penerjemah  belum memiliki kemahiran B2 yang memadai. Untuk memahami kesulitan pembelajar dalam menguasai bahasa kedua dan menghasilkan karya terjemahan yang bermutu dalam B2, penulis akan melakukan analisis kesalahan pada karya terjemahan para pembelajar. Objek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa tingkat akhir program studi bahasa Mandarin. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan pengaruh B1 pembelajar terhadap proses penerjemahan dari B1 ke B2, mencari penyebab kesalahan dan memberikan masukan mengenai cara untuk meminimalisir transfer negatif dari B1 ke B2 dalam proses pembelajaran penerjemahan.    Kata Kunci: Penerjemahan, Pemerolehan bahasa Kedua, Analisis Kesalahan, Pembelajaran bahasa Mandarin

Abstract

Communication strategies have something to do with ends and means. This current study attempts to answer the questions “What types of communication strategies were used by the speakers in speaking activities?” and “What were the functions of the communication strategies produced by the speakers in their interactions in performing the same tasks?” The investigation was conducted to the subjects taking Speaking Class at the English Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. The findings show that there were eleven types of communication strategies used by EFL learners in their interactions stimulated by the reading passages and pictures specifically utilized for data collection. Communication strategies were used by the speakers not only because of compensating for insufficient means, but also the need of communication.

Abstract

DARI TEKS RECOUNT KE NARATIF: MENGEMBANGKAN KETERAMPILAN MENULIS DAN MENINGKATKAN KEPERCAYAAN DIRIAbstractThis article seeks to explain the use of recount text to help students develop their narrative text. The idea was induced by students’ common problems in writing a narrative and teachers’ difficulties in scaffolding their students to write that genre. As recount and narrative genres share similar features, it is argued that using a recount as a basis, students will be able to produce a narrative more easily. Three main topics addressed here include a brief theoretical synthesis of narrative and recount, the procedures of teaching to write narrative from recount, and a brief report of a classroom-based study using the strategy. The result of the study shows that the strategy could help the students produce their narratives well. In fact, they could produce stories of various themes, interesting conflicts, and ending. In addition, their language became more descriptive which made their description more vivid. Step by step teaching procedure is explained in details and is coupled with examples. It is expected that steps can be easily understood and applied by teachers.Keywords: Recount, Narrative, Writing, Confidence AbstrakArtikel ini menjelaskan penggunaan teks recount untuk membantu siswa dalam mengembangkan teks naratif mereka. Gagasan itu diinduksi oleh masalah umum siswa dalam menulis sebuah narasi dan kesulitan guru dalam perancah siswa mereka untuk menulis genre tersebut. Karena genre recount dan naratif memiliki fitur serupa, sehingga dapat dipahami bahwa menggunakan teks recount memungkinkan sebagai dasar bagi siswa untuk menghasilkan teks narasi dengan lebih mudah. Tiga topik utama yang dibahas di sini mencakup sintesis teoretis narasi dan teks recount, prosedur pengajaran untuk menulis narasi dari teks recount, dan laporan singkat sebuah studi berbasis kelas dengan menggunakan strategi tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi tersebut dapat membantu siswa menghasilkan narasi mereka dengan baik. Buktinya, mereka bisa menghasilkan cerita dari berbagai tema, konflik menarik, dan penutup. Selain itu, bahasa mereka menjadi lebih deskriptif yang membuat deskripsi mereka lebih jelas. Langkah demi langkah prosedur mengajar dijelaskan secara rinci dan digabungkan dengan contoh. Diharapkan langkah-langkah tersebut dapat dengan mudah dipahami dan diterapkan oleh guru.Kata Kunci: Recount, Narrative, Writing, Confidence

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out whether the students’ ability in writing procedure text can be increased by using the ‘Magic Back and Forth’ Media or not. So, the title of this Classroom Action Research is “Increasing Students’ Writing Ability by Using the Magic Back and Forth Media at Class IX-B SMPN 3 X Koto Singkarak”. This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) and the subject of the research is 29 students of class IX-B. The research was conducted in two cycles which there were four steps for each cycle; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were collected through observation, questionaire, and conducting the test after implementing each cycle. The results of each cycle showed that the students’ writing ability can be increased by Using the ‘Magic Back and Forth’ Media. It can be seen from the result of the tests’; 71, 9 at cycle 1 and 77,7 at cycle 2. Key Words: writing ability, procedure text, magic back and forth media.

Abstract

AUDIO-LINGUAL METHOD IN TEACHING KAIWAJapanese is one of the foreign languages studied in Indonesia nowadays. As a means of communication, one of the the most important skill is speaking or conversation skill or kaiwa in Japanese. This paper aims at describing the audio-lingual method in teaching kaiwa  for the first year of Japanese language students. The audio-lingual method emphasizes on repetition. It is done for time efficiency in learning a language. The mimicry-memorize technique is used in the implementation of the audio-lingual method in learning kaiwa. The students are promoted to kaiwa  and are asked to memorize it. After memorizing it, they are later asked to practice. This technique requires them to be actively involved especially in speaking despite of their fear. Keywords: audio-lingual, kaiwa , mimicry-memoize, percakapan
