Abstract

Teaching and learning languages involve more than targeting grammatical and lexical knowledge. To achieve communicative competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, EFL learners need to develop their intercultural competence. This article proposes one of influential aspects of target culture (i.e. stereotypes) that may be encountered by EFL learners in learning. Further, the author argues why learners need to be exposed with stereotyping features across cultures and how this can be incorporated into English Language Teaching (ELT) by providing an example of teaching activities that can be adapted in a language classroom. Briefly, it is expected that this article may provide EFL teachers with a better understanding of integrating intercultural elements of a target language in their teaching practice. In turn, this may be useful to facilitate EFL learners in developing their intercultural communicative competence particularly with regards to cultural stereotype features.

Abstract

The use of correct preposition can influence the quality of information in spoken language. However, errors often occur in the use of prepositions, especially, in, on, and at. This research was done to identify the preposition errors made by students when speaking English. The data were obtained from the interview transcription which was used as the source of data from the research done in 2005 by the writer herself about grammatical and diction errors made by the first-year students of SMAN 2 Padang when speaking English. The finding showed that errors in the use of preposition in and at occurred more often than errors in the use of preposition on. The errors are included into two kinds of errors, namely misformation errors (substitution of “in” for “at”, “in” for “on”, “in” for “from”, “at” for “to” and “at” for “in”) and addition errors (addition of “in” and “at”). The finding also proved that the occurrence of errors in the use of prepositions in spoken English language is influenced by the speakers’ first or second language.Key words: preposition errors; preposition in, on, and at; error analysis; spoken language  ANALISIS ERROR DALAM PENGGUNAAN PREPOSISI:Kasus pada Preposisi in, on, dan atAbstrak         Penggunaan preposisi yang tepat dapat mempengaruhi kualitas informasi yang diberikan dalam bahasa lisan. Kata kunci: error dalam penggunaan preposisi; preposisi in, on, dan at; analisis error; bahasa lisan

Abstract

This paper describes how allo-repetition strategy improves students’ participation in conversation class. Students’ low participation in conversation class is presumably caused by their having no strategy in speaking. This research is aimed at examining whether allo-repetition strategy can better improve students’ participation in English conversation. The kind of research is a Classroom Action Research conducted in two cycles at grade X2 which consisted of 31 students. The data were collected by using observation sheets, field notes, and tape recordings. The qualitative data were analyzed by using the technique suggested by Hopkins (1993: 159-162), and the quantitative data were analyzed by using percentage. The result of data analysis from observation sheets and field-notes show the improvement of students’ involvement in learning process. The data from students’ recorded conversation show the improvements in terms of numbers of exchanges the students could produce in a conversation, students’ turn-taking, and students’ back-channeling. The result of this research indicates that allo-repetition strategy better improves students’ participation in conversation class. Abstract

The meaning of thing in a discourse is potentially determined by soemoene who has the power. In this case, a discourse is purposely designed and conditioned by dominan institution. Through the language in a discourse, some bad characters or images can be attributed to someone such as subversive, fundamentalist, terrorist, and so on. Such phenomena also can be found in the terminology of black and white in the discourse about racism. Black is identical as the opposition of white. Whereas black is bad, white always has connotation with good things, such as purity, God, excellence, etc. Binary opposition of white and black is continously produced in the discourse about racism. Black people (negroid) are assumed inferior toward white (caucasoid). At the same time, language also contribute positive image toward people who have the authority. In that case, language is not only a grammatical system, but it leads to the conflict of interest. This paper is a result of library research toward a discourse about racism in the novels of Jacqueline Woodson. The research was conducted by using poscolonialism and deconstruction approach. This reserach is aimed at revealing: (1) how are the image about black and white are constructed in the novels of Jacqueline Woodson. (2) What are the binary opposition, decentering and fixasion aspects in that novels. The conclusion of this research shows that language is still powerfull in shaping ideas about racism, especially in keeping the issues of black and white as binary opposition.  Key words: discourse, binary opposition, power, racism

Abstract

Concord is one of grammatical items from which many EFL learners still commit deviations. Their deviations from this grammatical item are a reflection of their concord mastery. There are five kinds of concord. However, this article aims at describing to what extent EFL learners have mastered 3 types of concord: subject-verb, subject-complement, and subject-object. The article was based on a part of the research entitled EFL Learners’ Concord Mastery and their grammatical Deviations carried out by the writer two years ago. The population was 120 EFL learners consisting of three classes of the third year students of the English Department of the Faculty of Languages, Literature, and Arts of the State University of Padang, and with cluster-sampling technique one class of them was chosen as the sample comprising of 32 subjects. The data were gathered through a fifty-item test with one administration, but the sample students were required to write 4 versions of the answers. There were 2 versions of concord mastery (CM), CM1 which was based on the correct answers of version 1 and CM 2 which was based on the correct answers after the grammatical deviations were split into mistakes and errors. With the use of quantitatively descriptive method, it was found out that on the average the EFL learners’ CM1 was only 64 which was categorized into satisfactory level based on 5 achievement categories proposed by UNP (2005): excellent, good, satisfactory, weak, and poor. However, CM2 on the average increased significantly to 70, and the achievement category changed into good level. The writer believes CM2 was the actual concord mastery of the EFL learners. Thus, he suggests that an EFL lecturer/ teacher not neglect concord and (s)he split grammatical deviations into mistakes and errors in order to know actual mastery of any grammatical item.
