Abstract

Adolescents serving time in LPKA face psychological pressure in the form of low self-esteem and pessimism that can hinder future orientation. Adversity quotient, the ability to face and overcome difficulties, is believed to play an important role in shaping a positive future direction. This study aims to analyze the relationship between adversity quotient and future orientation in 40 adolescents aged 18-21 years in LPKA Class II Bandar Lampung. The method used was quantitative correlation with data collection through the future orientation scale (Nurmi, 1991) and the adversity quotient scale (Stoltz, 2000). The analysis used Spearman's rank correlation test because the data were not normally distributed. Results showed a significant positive relationship between adversity quotient and future orientation (r = 0.616; p < 0.05), so the hypothesis was accepted. This finding confirms the novelty of the study by highlighting the importance of psychological factors in the rehabilitation of juveniles with legal problems, as well as its practical implications in the design of coaching programs based on increasing adversity quotient.  Keywords: Adversity Quotient, Future Orientation, Children's Special Development Institution

Abstract

The Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ) is a widely used instrument for measuring family resilience in various cultural contexts. However, research on its psychometric quality using the Rasch model approach is still limited, especially in Indonesia. This study aims to examine the item fit, unidimensionality, difficulty level, and reliability of the WFRQ by involving 355 adult respondents living with their nuclear or extended families. Data analysis was performed using WINSTEP software. The results show that most WFRQ items meet the fit criteria with Mean Square (MNSQ) values ranging from 0.5 to 1.5. Two items (8 and 20) were eliminated because they did not meet the fit criteria. The reliability value was excellent, with a person reliability of 0.94 and an item reliability of 0.96. The Wright Map showed that the majority of respondents were at a moderate to high level of resilience, while the item difficulty level was relatively low, making the instrument easy for respondents with high resilience.  Keywords: Rasch model, WFRQ, Psychometrics

Abstract

The trend of working mothers is not uncommon anymore, starting from a desire to improve the economic status of the families to the desire for self-actualization, combined with the increasing number of women with higher education. Malaysian women comprise 50% of the work force, and 70% of them are married working women (Sabil & Marican, 2010). Mother and child interaction is very important for the development of the child. Each of the working mothers’ parenting style chosen must be appropriate for their children, in accordance with the dual responsibilities or roles that she is juggling with. A working mother who is not able to guide and give full attention to their children might have a negative impact on the child’s developmental outcomes. Thus, this study aimed to look at the relationship between parenting satisfaction and parenting style of working mothers. This study was conducted with 62 working mothers in Sultan Idris Education University who work for an average of 15-32 hours per week. They were 22-40 years old with children under 15 years old. These mothers completed the Parenting Satisfaction Scale (PSS) as a measure of parenting satisfaction and the Parenting Style Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) to measure their parenting styles. The results of this study indicated that the working mothers tended to adopt the authoritative parenting style in their parenting practice, and the majority reported moderate level of parenting satisfaction. The results also showed there were differential relationships between parenting style and parenting satisfaction in the working mothers.

Abstract

During these recent years, patient safety has become a prominent issue in the medical atmosphere and appeared to be the main target for improvement (Leroy et al., 2012). As one of the disciplines in health sciences, psychology might play an important role in addressing the problems occurred in patient safety. There are broad aspects where psychology may contribute (Nash, McKay, Vogel, & Masters, 2012), but the involvement of psychology in changing the safety within health care setting has been underestimated and its role has been partially described (Øvretveit, 2009).Therefore, this paper is proposed in order to demonstrate one of the behavioral theories in psychology, named the Organizational Behavioral Approach (OBA) to give a wider understanding on how psychologist may contribute to address the issues in patient safety, especially the problems related to medical error and safety culture.
