Abstract

Abstract : Chinese settlements along the northern coast of Java developed through maritime trade networks that shaped the shophouse typology as a hybrid of residential and commercial functions. Jamblang and Indramayu are two coastal towns in West Java that share a similar history of Chinese migration but exhibit different conditions regarding their shop houses. This study aims to compare the characteristics and transformation of Chinese shophouses in Indramayu and Jamblang in order to understand their divergent developmental trajectories within the framework of socio-economic resilience and diaspora architectural conservation. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using comparative case studies. Data were collected through field observation, visual documentation, measured drawings, and limited interviews, and analyzed based on variables including mass composition, façade design, functional adaptation, and spatial connectivity to street corridors. The findings reveal that both locations retain the fundamental courtyard-based shophouse typology. However, Indramayu demonstrates greater continuity through gradual functional adaptation and sustained integration with the commercial activities along Jalan Cimanuk. In contrast, Jamblang exhibits façade fragmentation and declining visual integrity due to infrastructural pressures and weakening local economic conditions. The study highlights that the sustainability of diaspora architecture depends not solely on formal preservation but on functional adaptability and spatial distribution within the urban fabric. These findings contribute to the development of heritage conservation strategies grounded in economic resilience and typological adaptability in coastal towns. Keywords: Chinese shophouse, diaspora architecture, adaptive reuse, heritage resilience, coastal Java

Abstract

Abstract : A community kitchen is a collective space that serves not only as a place for cooking, but also as a venue for social collaboration, interaction among users, and a means of community empowerment. In the context of the community kitchens operated by FoodCycle Indonesia, the complexity of activities and the diversity of users’ backgrounds present unique challenges in designing the space and furniture to meet users’ needs. This study aims to develop a design strategy for the space, furniture, and spatial elements that can address the functional and user needs of a community kitchen. Using a design thinking approach and qualitative case study methods, this study focuses on identifying activity patterns, spatial issues, and the strategic roles of the space and furniture in supporting work efficiency and user comfort during various activities in the community kitchen. The process of finding solutions was conducted in depth through the “empathize” phase to fully understand user needs through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The results of this research were formulated into a design strategy for flexible spaces and furniture that adapts to the evolving activities in the community kitchen, taking into account aspects such as activities and needs, ergonomics, anthropometry, materials, and other interior design elements, while supporting the kitchen’s long-term operations. This study is expected to produce design recommendations that can create an inclusive workspace, improve work quality, and enhance the efficiency of workflows within community kitchen facilities. Abstract

Abstract: This study examines symbolic negotiation in three-dimensional product design that integrates traditional elements into modern design contexts. Previous studies on cultural artefacts and product design have largely emphasised qualitative narratives, while empirical testing of user perception toward three-dimensional visual units remains limited. Therefore, this research proposes the Symbolic Negotiation Matrix as its main novelty, distinguishing fixed and fluid design elements through morphological decomposition and perceptual validation. This study aims to formulate a systematic framework for the decomposition of three-dimensional geometric units and to validate its impact on user identity recognition. The study applies a sequential exploratory strategy, beginning with a qualitative morphological audit of the Tegal clay teapot as a case object, followed by a quantitative survey using a semantic differential scale involving 85 respondents. The findings show a significant difference in identity recognition across design variables, χ² (3, N = 340) = 42.47; p < 0.001; Cramer’s V = 0.35. Volume proportion achieved the highest recognition rate, reaching 88 percent or 75 out of 85 respondents, followed by construction logic at 74 percent or 63 out of 85 respondents. The study concludes that successful transformation of cultural products does not rely merely on surface ornamentation but on the designer’s ability to preserve morphological structures that function as identity anchors. Abstract

Abstract : This study examines the transformation of Pasar Cinde in Palembang within the architectural and environmental health context based on healthy market standards. As one of the oldest traditional markets, Pasar Cinde has undergone significant changes due to demolition and an unfinished modernization project, leading to spatial disorganization and a decline in environmental quality. This study assesses the market’s compliance with healthy market standards using an architectural anatomy approach, covering the environment, site, and buildings. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach through six stages: (1) documenting the market's condition before and after demolition, (2) classifying architectural elements, (3) comparing significant changes, (4) developing an evaluation matrix, (5) identifying the impact of transformation, and (6) drawing conclusions and recommendations. The findings indicate that Pasar Cinde’s feasibility declined from 55.5% before demolition to 20% afterward. Several key aspects were not met, including air circulation, natural lighting, drainage, cleanliness, and visitor and vendor comfort. However, there is potential for improvement in architectural aspects, such as better parking management, optimization of natural and artificial lighting, and more efficient spatial management. With the evaluation matrix, this study provides an objective assessment of the market’s post-transformation condition and offers recommendations to improve Pasar Cinde’s compliance with healthy and sustainable market principles. Abstract

Abstract : Modern church architecture often emphasizes visual aesthetics, frequently overlooking to the crucial auditory dimension essential to shaping a sacred worship experience. Within the Christian tradition, particularly in Calvinist churches, auditory perception plays a significant role in facilitating divine communication during liturgy. This study investigates the` relationship between auditory perception and spatial form in Christian church architecture, using GKI Pengampon Church in Cirebon as a case study. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research involves: (1) a theoretical exploration of church architecture and auditory perception; (2) spatial mapping of the main worship space at GKI pengampon; (3) formulation of ideogram standards for auditory perception in relation to architectural form and space; (4) comparative analysis between the case study and theoretical perceptual standards; and (5) synthesis of findings. The aim is to elucidate the interplay between auditory perception and spatial form in the context of Calvinist worship. The findings reveal that, while the church exhibits visual elements aligned with Calvinist architectural principles, its spatial configuration does not adequately support acoustic quality or congregational auditory experience. This research contributes to the theoretical discourse on multisensory architecture and offers practical insights for designing worship spaces that holistically address the spiritual and sensory needs of the congregation.
