Abstract

Abstract: The term "place identity" is open to multiple interpretations because it applies both to the identity of a place and to the identity of people and their process of identifying with that place, two elements that are both socially constructed and develop reciprocally, both among themselves and with the place itself. In the context of interior spaces, which have an enclosure and a defined spatial content with clear boundaries and positions, the concept of place identity is often associated with the brand identity of a commercial enterprise or service provider. This study aims to examine the concept of place identity by identifying various relevant discussions and classifying them based on the levels of place identity dimensions ranging from individual to communal interpretations of interior spaces, to broader scales related to brand/corporate identity and place image. The research was conducted using a systematic concept analysis approach to formulate a broad and comprehensive definition, by reviewing the literature to identify similarities and differences among concepts, and to develop a formulation of place identity that can represent identity within the context of interiority The research findings identified three main components that shape place identity in the context of interior spaces: the physical environment, activity, and meaning. These three components provide a conceptual framework for explaining the process of place identity formation in interior spaces. Keywords : Place identity, Activity, Physical environment, Meaning, Interiority

Abstract

Abstract : The coffee shops in Bandung is no longer just a passing fad. It is estimated that there are currently around 600 coffee shops in operation. Another factor driving the growth of the café scene is the public’s growing obsession with social media. This research intends to identify attractive factors in coffee shops with hidden gem branding, which are located in spaces that have undergone functional transformation. This was done because, in Bandung, the trend of stable consumer development means that coffee shops are no longer just a seasonal trend. This research is a cross-sectional study and was analyzed quantitatively. Data collection methods were carried out using field observations and the distribution of questionnaires, as well as literature studies. The research results show that the author's hypothesis which suggests attractiveness factors in coffee shops with hidden gem branding that are located in spaces that have undergone functional transformation, is related to visitors' sense of attachment to the physical space of the coffee shop. The characteristics that feel the element of attachment the most are visitors aged 17 – 25 years. Characteristic of spatial transformation, the insertion system is considered to create a feeling of familiarity because it reminds visitors of their memories when they were in the case study coffee shop area due to not making many changes, thus influencing the feeling of familiarity. The design variables that cause the desire to revisit, because they cause attachment, are the variables of staff friendliness, room ambiance, furniture layout, furniture design, level of privacy, and room size. Keywords : coffee shop, hidden gem, spatial transformation, commodification, place attachment

Abstract

Abstract : Early childhood education is essential as it lays the foundation for children's long-term learning. Therefore, developing appropriate and high-quality learning materials is crucial for their growth. The Phygital learning kit is a set of learning materials that integrates both physical and digital elements to enhance learning through play. The study utilizes a qualitative research approach, specifically employing the research through design approach with ADDIE framework, which is an acronym denoting the sequential stages of Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. This instructional design methodology is often used in the creation of instructional materials. The study's findings highlight key factors essential for developing Phygital Pretend Play Learning Kit. First, incorporating materials suited to children's age and capabilities. Additionally, the kit needs to have self-paced learning feature that allows children to explore and acquire knowledge independently, promoting autonomy and self-regulation. Third there should be personalization options to further enhance the learning experience by catering to individual needs, preferences, and learning styles. The integration of gamification elements such as levels, rewards, and challenges to boost motivation and sustain long-term participation. Lastly, the use of multi-sensory elements, including tactile, auditory, and visual stimuli, enriches the educational experience and supports holistic development. This study contributes valuable insights to early childhood education by informing the essential key factors for developing phygital learning kit. Abstract

Abstract : Prapatan Lima Bandung is a strategic intersection formed by the convergence of five major roads, playing a significant role in the city’s urban development. The area has evolved from the era of local Sundanese settlements, through Dutch colonial rule, to the post-independence period marked by the Asia-Africa Conference (AAC), shaping a complex spatial character. The character of the area includes the presence of both heritage and non-heritage buildings within five urban-forming blocks located in a designated cultural heritage district, comprising a variety of active and inactive structures. The site also spans two Sub-District Regions (SWK): Cibeunying and Karees, each oriented towards tourism and trade-services respectively. Currently, the vitality of spaces and buildings in the area is in decline, necessitating a revitalization effort to reactivate spatial functions and quality in a contextual manner. In this effort, the block with the highest potential as a catalyst has been selected—namely, the block bounded by Jalan Naripan, Jalan Sunda, and Jalan A. Yani. This study adopts a morphological approach encompassing building structures, street networks, and land use patterns; a contextual approach grounded in the historical trajectory of the area; and a spatial character approach focusing on corridor activity, scale, and function. This study aims to examine functions that can activate corridor inhabitance and the building articulation that shapes the spatial structure of Prapatan Lima, Bandung. The research produces design guidelines intended to revitalize contextual spatial articulation and support sustainable social and economic activity. Abstract

Abstract: The Kajoetangan area in Malang has undergone a significant transformation since being designated a cultural tourism destination, marked by the emergence of classic-style cafes that blend historical value with modernity. This study is based on the theoretical hypothesis that the appeal of Hamur Mbah Ndut Café does not stem solely from nostalgic decor, but rather from a strategy of visual identity adaptation. It is hypothesized that the success of Hamur Mbah Ndut Café lies in its ability to preserve the original residential building (through its facade and structure), which is then integrated with new decorative elements. The aim of the research is to explore how visual elements such as facades, interiors, and instagramable spatial layout contribute to visitor experience and city branding. The approach used is phenomenology, with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, field observations, and thematic analysis. The results of the study show that Café Hamur Mbah Ndut has managed to build a strong visual appeal and revive cultural values through authentic and adaptive design. Visual aesthetics not only increase visitor comfort and loyalty, but also encourage digital promotion through social media. However, increased visits also pose challenges, such as overcrowding, environmental degradation, and social pressures. Therefore, visitor mitigation strategies such as the contribution of IDR 5,000 entrance tickets for environmental management are an important part of sustainability efforts. This study concludes that the synergy between visual aesthetics, local identity, and sustainable management makes the Kajoetangan area develop as an inclusive, adaptive, and characterful cultural tourism destination. Abstract

Abstract : The increasing demand for public spaces has led to significant socio-economic changes, including the relocation of street vendors (PKL) to restore the function of public areas. However, this relocation often presents challenges for PKL. In 2023, PKL in Bandung were moved to Basement Alun-Alun Bandung and Level 1 Griya Buah Batu, while in 2022, PKL in Yogyakarta were relocated to Teras Malioboro 1 and 2. This study aims to evaluate the impact of these relocations, focusing on their positive and negative outcomes from the perspective of PKL as the most affected group. A design approach was employed by combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires, then analyzed using public space theory and public policy evaluation criteria. The study assesses three key parameters: space quality, accessibility, and the suitability of the location for PKL businesses. The findings indicate that Teras Malioboro 1 offers the best facilities and comfort, while Griya Buah Batu and Basement Alun-Alun Bandung are less adequate in terms of design and functionality. Despite differences between locations, all PKL experienced a decline in income due to low visibility in the relocation areas and increased distance from customers. This study concludes that while improved space quality enhances comfort, strategic visibility and accessibility remain crucial factors for the sustainability of PKL businesses. Future relocations must balance space improvements with these factors to ensure both economic and functional success. Abstract

Abstract : Limited visitation and public engagement remain major issues for museums in Indonesia, indicating that the transition toward the New Museology paradigm has not yet been fully accompanied by inclusive exhibition practices. One emerging effort is the implementation of interactive and multisensory exhibition design; however, its effectiveness in supporting museum inclusivity still requires critical evaluation. This study aims to evaluate the inclusivity of interactive and multisensory exhibition design in Indonesian museums based on the Integrated Museum Engagement Model (IMEM), with the Bank Indonesia Museum and the Wayang Museum in Jakarta as case studies. This research employed a mixed-methods approach through field observation, visual documentation, and questionnaires distributed to museum visitors. The analysis used the three pillars of IMEM, namely Participatory Design, Narrative Immersion, and Digital Interaction, as an evaluative framework. The findings show that both museums have adopted various interactive elements, such as touchscreens, immersive spaces, audio-visual media, and digital modelling, which contribute to increased visitor engagement. However, these implementations have not fully supported inclusivity. Limitations remain in physical accessibility, tactile and audio information, and facilities for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. These findings emphasize the need to strengthen interactive exhibition design by integrating it more clearly with inclusive principles in the development of museums in Indonesia.   Keywords : Integrated Museum Engagement Model; Museum; Inclusive Museum; Interactive Exhibition Design; Multisensory

Abstract

Abstract : This research addresses the gap in understanding of how interior lighting and visuals of worship spaces relate to support the spiritual experience of the elderly with the aim of examining the strategic contribution of lighting and visualization elements in the interior design of worship spaces. The focus is on how these visual elements shape a spirit of place (genius loci) that is inclusive of an aging population experiencing declining physical and cognitive function. Therefore, creating a meaningful spiritual space is important for the elderly. To address these issues, this study used mixed methods; quantitative through the SF-12 questionnaire to determine aspects related to personal well-being, and qualitative methods through interviews with elderly congregants to explore their preferences and experiences. Quantitative analysis showed significant correlations between the use of specific lighting and visual design strategies and spiritual dimensions. Furthermore, the qualitative data results provided additional insights that visual comfort, focus of worship, as well as the selection of seating positions are closely related to the creation of a sacred atmosphere that supports spiritual connection. In conclusion, considering the principles of genius loci can create a contextualized space that suits the needs of elderly congregants. The findings result in recommendations for interior design of worship spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also contextual and transcendental, according to the spiritual needs of the elderly. This research provides a conceptual contribution in the development of designs that are inclusive and responsive to the dynamics of the spiritual experience of the elderly in the context of interior design. Abstract

Abstract : The Indigenous Community of Matotonan Village in the Mentawai Islands received government housing assistance totaling 200 units in 2008 and 100 units in 2019. Over time, most of these houses underwent modifications, resulting in changes to their spatial configurations. This study aims to explain the changes in spatial configuration that occurred in the government-assisted houses within the Matotonan Indigenous Community. The research began with a physical survey of all social housing units in Matotonan Village. From this, 10 samples were selected based on two criteria: 1) The house had undergone significant changes and/or featured a unique spatial configuration; 2) The residents were willing to be interviewed and have their homes studied. Data were collected through observing residents’ activities within the home, conducting in-depth interviews with residents and/or their representatives, and thoroughly measuring the house layouts. The measured layout data were illustrated using AutoCAD and CorelDRAW software. The current layout of each sample was then compared with its original design before modifications. The analysis revealed changes in spatial configuration and spatial depth in the social housing units. These changes were primarily due to additional spaces and building mass resulting from an increase in the number of occupants, specific needs for kitchen space, and the requirement for a larger front area. The demand for specific spaces in these houses is closely related to traditional and cultural values. These changes also affected the confex space diagrams, j-graph values, connectivity, and spatial integration. Abstract

Abstract : The limited number of children’s libraries in Indonesia contributes to low literacy levels among. This condition is further exacerbated by the lack of libraries designed using a child friendly architectural approach. Therefore, design guidelines are needed to translate children’s needs and characteristics into library environments that support their growth and development. This study aims to formulate design guidelines for children’s libraries based on child-friendly concepts. A qualitative descriptive method was employed through literature review and precedent studies. The theoretical framework includes child-friendly concepts, children’s library services and activities, and the theories of architectural anatomy and property composition. The precedent studies were conducted on the CALS Children’s Library in the United States and the Shirasagi Children’s Library in Japan. The study identifies three main architectural aspects, namely quality of child-friendly spatial properties, inclusive child accessibility, and integrated spatial organization, as the basis for formulating design guidelines. These aspects support the creation of safe, comfortable, inclusive, and child-friendly library environments. The findings are expected to enrich the discourse on child-friendly architecture and serve as a reference for architects, library managers, and policymakers in developing educational spaces for children aged 10–12 years while supporting their needs, rights, learning experiences, and overall development. Keywords : Design Guidelines, Child-Friendly Concept, Children's Library.
