Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

This article was written to describe the procedure of using Draw the Teacher game in teaching vocabulary for elementary school students. The use of translation method and memorize technique done by the teacher in teaching vocabulary is not effective. As the result, the students tend to easily get bored and do not give attention during teaching learning process. By using this game, it is hoped that the students will enjoy in learning English especially in learning vocabulary. During the game, the students are asked to do the instructions given by the teacher to draw the teacher’s body parts. Here, they will learn vocabulary related to the name of body’s parts. In addition, drawing is the main activity in this game. This activity not only can make students fun in the classroom, but also can enhance students’ cognitive development and memory retention. Abstrak Artikel ini ditulis untuk mendeskripsikan prosedur penggunaan permainan Draw the Teacher dalam mengajarkan kosakata pada siswa sekolah dasar. Penggunaan metoda terjemahan dan hafalan dalam mengajarkan kosakata selama ini dianggap kurang efektif. Akibatnya, siswa sekolah dasar cenderung untuk merasa bosan dan tidak memberikan perhatian penuh selama proses belajar mengajar. Dengan permainan ini diharapkan siswa dapat menyukai pelajaran bahasa Inggris terutama dalam pembelajaran kosakata. Selama permainan, siswa diminta untuk melakukan instruksi yang diberikan guru berupa menggambar bagian tubuh dari guru. Siswa akan belajar mengenai kosa kata yang berhubungan dengan nama bagian-bagian tubuh. Selain itu, menggambar merupakan kegiatan inti dari permainan ini. Selain menyenangkan, menggambar dapat meningkatkan perkembangan kognitif dan kemampuan memori siswa.

Errors in Using Prepositions: An Analysis on English Freshmen Majoring on Literature at Universitas Negeri Padang in Academic Year 2019 Nentis Nentis; An Fauzia Rozani Syafei

The research was aimed at analyzing the English department students errors in using prepositions. The subject of this research was the the freshmen of English Department majoring on literature in academic year 2019. Out of 103 students, 31% of them were choosen to be a sample by using simple random technique. The data had been gathered by using gap-filling test. The results of the data analysis show that from 1240 answers in the test, there were 796 errors made by the students. The errors included 184 (59%) errors prepositions of time, 213 (69%) errors in prepositions of place, 236 (76%) errors prepositions of direction/movement and 163 (52%) errors other kinds of prepositions. In addition, related to the cause of errors, it was the target language that mostly causes the students commit errors (intralingual errors). Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the freshmen of English students commit 64% total of errors in using prepositions and the errors itself mostly are due to the students’ lack ability in grammatical.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat situasi pengajaran listening skill pada mata pelajaran listening untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai masalah-masalah yang dihadapi siswa kelas XI SMA N 10 Padang yang berkaitan dengan materi listening skill dan untuk melihat kebutuhan mereka terhadap materi listening skill dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Metode penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini yang melibatkan seluruh siswa kelas XI SMA N 10 Padang, serta guru Bahasa Inggris kelas XI di SMA N 10 Padang. Angket digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk mengetahui kebutuhan dan masalah yang dihadapi siswa, sementara untuk mengetahui situasi pengajaran listening dilakukan melalui interview. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian analisa situasi, ditemukan bahwa materi listening skill yang tersedia untuk mendukung kegiatan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris masih minim meskipun terdapat fasilitas yang memadai di SMA N 10. Kemudian, untuk penelitian analisa kebutuhan ditemukan bahwa masih banyak siswa yang mendapat kesulitan dalam menguasai listening skill pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris baik dilihat dari segi input, topic, language dan juga task.Key Words: students‟ needs analysis, situation analysis, listening material

The writer will discuss about teaching reading comprehension to senior high school by using the reciprocal teaching technique. This technique was firstly introduced by Annemarie Palinscar and Ann Brown in 1984.There are several goals in implementing the reciprocal teaching technique on descriptive text, such as to help students finding main ideas and specific information in the text and to help students in improving the vocabulary. This technique is not only limited to descriptive text, but also to many other kinds of text. By using this technique, the students are expected to be more interested in reading since they are actively involved in the process.Teaching reading comprehension by using the reciprocal teaching technique consists of four stages such as predicting, questioning, clarifying, dan summarizing. The activity begins with what the students have already known about descriptive text. After that, the teacher introduces each stage of the reciprocal teaching technique by modelling them. When the students have understood each stage, they are then divided into a group of four or more. Then, they begin to perform each stage of the reciprocal teaching technique.

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan collocation dalam tulisan esai tiga sampai lima paragraf. Pola collocation yang di analisa dalam tulisan ini adalah verb + noun collocation dan adjective + noun collocation. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif . Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa kependidikan semester tiga yang telah telah mempelajari Writing 2. Sampel penelitian ini adalah kelas KP2 tahun masuk 2011. Instrument penelitian ini adalah tes dimana responden diberikan sejumlah waktu untuk menulis sebuah esai tiga sampai lima paragraph. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan verb + noun collocation dan adjective noun collocation berada pada level “good” dan “excellent”. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulan bahwa penggunaan verb + noun collocation dan adjective + noun collocation bukanlah masalah utama dalam esai tiga sampai lima paragraf mahasiswa semester tiga. Serta, dapat juga disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan verb + noun collocation lebih sulit dibandingkan dengan penggunaan adjective + noun collocation. Kata kunci : Collocation, writing, use of collocation

An Error Analysis of Preposition in Student's Recount Text: A Descriptive Study at MAN 2 Padang Ika Nur Islami; Witri Oktavia

This study aimed to identify, classify and explain the errors and source of error that the second grade students of MAN 2 Padang made in using preposition based on surface strategy taxonomy and Brown’s theory (2000). The instrumentation of this research is recount text. In this research, the researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method. The researcher reveals the types of errors and explains the sources of error that occurred. The result of the research shows that 144 errors occurred at the second grade students of Man 2 Padang in using preposition. The researcher found the highest percentage of type of error is misformation with total number 78 errors or 54,16%. The other finding is sources of errors which has interlingual transfer as the highest soure of error with total number 114 error or 79,16%.

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat dampak terhadap penggunaan media ini dalam fase kegiatan sebelum dan sesudah berbicara terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa.). Media yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Genki-English (CD-Interactive). Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas IV SDN 02 Sawahlunto tahun pelajaran 2013-2014. Sampel penelitian ini terdiri dari dua kelompok, kelompok A sebagai kelompok eksperimen menggunakan Genki-English (CD-Interactive) dan Kelompok B sebagai kelas control dengan menggunakan media Picture Cards and Teacher’s voice. Data berupa nilai speaking test dianalisis secara statistic dengan menggunakan rumus t-test, dan ditemukan bahwa t-hitung sebesar 2,51, sedangkan sebesar2,228, yang berarti t-hitung> t-tabel. Berdasarkan hasil hitungan ini, disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan media Genki-English dalam pembelajaran dapat memberikan pengaruh yang lebih baik terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa. Abstrak Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk membahas bagaimana pengajaran menulis teks deskriptif dengan menggunakan strategi imagery. Pelaksanaan pembelajaran menggunakan strategi imagery ini harus melalui dua tahapan utama. Pertama adalah tahap persiapan. Dalam tahap ini guru mempersiapkan segala materi dan topik yang sesuai dengan tingkat siswa kemudian mempersiapkan pertanyaan-pertanyaan untuk menuntun siswa mengembangkan ide-ide dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Tahap kedua adalah prosedur mengajar. Tahap ini terdiri dari tiga proses yaitu; pre-teaching, whilst-teaching dan post-teaching. Dalam pre-teaching, guru melakukan kegiatan warming up yang dapat mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan siswa tentang teks deskriptif. Whilst-teaching dibagi menjadi tiga bagian: (1) eksplorasi; (2) elaborasi dan; (3) konfirmasi. Guru akan menggunakan strategi imagery pada bagian eksplorasi dan siswa disuruh mengaplikasikan strategi ini pada bagian elaborasi. Pada proses post-teaching guru menyimpulkan materi yang telah diajarkan dan menutup pelajaran. Kata Kunci: imagery, teaching writing, descriptive text, Junior High School students.

Abstrak Makalah ini membahas tentang penggunaan sebuah media yang dapat membantu pengajaran listening (mendengarkan) teks narrative dengan bantuan visualisasi pertunjukkan puppet yang difokuskan kepada siswa sekolah menengah pertama (SMP). Sesuai dengan KTSP 2006, teks narrative wajib diajarkan pada kelas 8 dan 9. Dalam implikasinya, puppet ditampilkan sesuai dengan teks yang diperdengarkan sehingga siswa akan sangat terbantu dalam memahami isi teks narrative, puppet merupakan visualisasi yang menarik yang dapat menggambarkan isi cerita secara langsung. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pertunjukan puppet dapat digunakan sebagai media alternatif dalam mengajarkan listening narrative texts. Key Words: Teaching Listening, Narrative Text, Puppet Show
