Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Abstract

Analytical exposition text is one of the compulsory texts which is taught in senior high school in Indonesia. The aim of this research is to analyze how good students’ ability and describe students’ difficulties in writing analytical exposition text. It was a descriptive research. The population of this research is the second grade students of SMA Adabiah Padang, it were 48 students as the sample: XI IPA 1 which consists of 22 students and others form XI IPS 4. The students were asked to write an analytical exposition text. The students’ writing was analyzed by using the criterion published by Weston High School’s writing rubric which consists of five indicators: the introduction, body paragraphs and examples, conclusion, mechanics, and grammar and word choice. Based on the findings, most of the students get poor ability in four indicators measured: the introduction, body paragraphs and examples, conclusion, and mechanics and get good ability in the grammar and word choice.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the students difficulty in understanding native and non-native lecturer which based on two aspects: linguistics and non-linguistics difficulties. It was also followed by the comparison of students difficulties in understanding both of lecturers.This study was conducted at English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2017/2018. The population of this research are all English education students in academic years 2017/2018 with the total number 95 students. Based on the population, the samples of this research are two classes: the first class are taught by native lecturer and second class are taught by non-native lecturer with the total number 64 students. This research used the descriptive collaborative method and used questionnaire as the main instrument followed by interview and observation to support the data from questionnaire. This research found that native lecturer tend to give more linguistics problem to the students rather than non-linguistics problem especially in lecturers accent and vocabulary understanding. Related to non-linguistics problem, lecturers speed placed the highest percentage. However, non-native lecture did not give significant difficulties but the higher percentage showed in non-linguistics problem especially in the way of lecturer in giving explanation.

Abstract

AbstrakSiswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) kesulitan dalam membuat sebuah narrative text. Hal ini disebabkan karena siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) kesulitan mencari ide yang akan dikembangkan menjadi sebuah narrative text. Maka dari itu makalah ini mengusulkan menggunakan supposemania cards game sebagai sebuah aktivitas yang membantu siswa mengumpulkan ide-ide. Permainan ini akan membantu siswa dalam tahap pre-writing yang merupakan tahap yang sangat penting dalam proses menulis. Keuntungan dari permainan ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan penalaran dan imaginasi siswa dari masalah yang nantinya akan dihadirkan. Dan karena permainan ini dilakukan secara kelompok maka hal ini dapat mengajarkan siswa berbagai jenis keterampilan sosial seperti kerjasama, berkepemimpinan, saling penghormati dan menghargai, dan bersikap adil.Key Words: narrative text, pre-writing stage, teaching writing, supposemania, game

Abstract

Reading is a process to review the contents understanding of a Text. Then, This  paper  writing  aims to help teachers overcome one of problem in teaching reading atStudents Junior High School students.  In addition, this paper also purpose to explain application of making predictions strategy in order to invite students to reading english text. This strategy is taught so that students were able to predict the information of the text in accordance with the students' knowledge. By using this strategy, students are trained to organize information obtained before reading the text, compared with the information that they had heard, and combine both the information after reading to make a conclusion. This strategy is expected to increase the ability of students understanding a text for teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Abstrak Article ini ditulis untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara menerapkan “Mistake Buster teknik dalam pengajaran tata basaha untuk anak SMP. Teknik ini membantu guru dalam mengajarkan tata bahasa khususnya the past continues tense untuk anak SMP. Kegiatan yang dibahas dalam artikel ini adalah kegiatan awal, kegiatan inti, dan kegiatan akhir. Pada kegiatan awal guru memberitahu siswa bahwa mereka akan membahas tentang the auxiliary verb be dalam past continues tense. Pada kegiatan inti, guru menceritakan kepada siswa bahwa mereka akan mengulang past continues tense dalam kalimat panjang. Kemudian kegiatan akhir, guru membaca teks recount and meminta siswa untuk mendengarkan beberapa kesalahan dan memperbaikinya. Reward diberikan untuk setiap jawaban betul. Guru kemudian mengulang point-point penting dengan memberikan penjelasan tambahan.   Keywords       : mistake buster, past continues, JHS students, technique

Abstract

Reading is not just a source of information and exciting experiences, it is also a key part of language training at all stages, as it facilitates various ways of learning. Reading strategies are one of method to help students in improving their reading ability and make easier in grasp the meaning of the text.  This study aimed to investigate the reading strategies used by English Department Students in tertiary level at Universitas Negeri Padang. Specifically, it focused to identify the reading strategies frequently used by the students. Sixty-three undergraduate students were randomly selected as the respondents for this study, a fifty-item questionnaire which focused on the frequency of use of pre, while, and post-reading strategies was applied in the study. In addition, the researcher used interview method according to ten-high score based on questionnaire result to delved students’ reading strategies in reading phases. English Students at UNP were observed have been found to typically re-check readings or phrases that were not known during the reading process.

Abstract

Abstrak Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan yang paling mendasar bagi semua siswa di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas. Siswa diharapkan memiliki pemahaman yang baik terhadap teks yang mereka baca. Namun pada kenyataannya, siswa yang mempelajari bahasa Inggris tetap menghadapi kesulitan di dalam memahami teks. Hal ini bisa dilihat dari kurang tertariknya siswa dalam proses membaca, terbatasnya kemampuan mereka dalam mengetahui kosa kata bahasa Inggris, serta kurang menariknya strategi yang digunakan oleh guru di dalam proses pembelajaran. Untuk mencapai pemahaman yang baik dalam membaca dibutuhkan proses yang baik. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tentang bagaimana penerapan Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) Strategy dalam proses pembelajaran  membaca. Dalam Sustained Silent Reading (SSR), ada proses preview, dimana siswa membaca setiap kalimat pertama dalam setiap paragraf, predict what comes next, read the whole text silently, dan discussion. Dengan penerapan strategi ini siswa diharapkan mampu memahami informasi di dalam teks yang telah dibacanya dengan lebih baik. Key Words: Reading, Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan artikel ini adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana langkah-langkah yang dilakukan dalam mengajarkan berbicara menggunakan media kamishibai. Adapun langkah-langkahnya adalah guru memberikan kosa kata yang berhubungan dengan cerita kamishibai, kemudian guru memperkenalkan tokoh dalam cerita kamishibai, lalu menceritakan cerita menggunakan kamishibai. Setelah itu guru memandu siswa membahas cerita kamishibai yaitu dengan menentukan struktur generik dan pesan-pesan moral yang terdapat dalam cerita kamishibai. Kemudian guru membagi murid menjadi beberapa kelompok untuk bersiap-siap menampilkan cerita kamishibai di depan kelas. Setelah satu kelompok tampil, kelompok yang lain memberikan komentar terhadap penampilan kelompok tersebut. Dengan adanya komentar ini, siswa akan termotivasi untuk tampil lebih baik lagi. Abstract

Abstrak Penulisan artikel ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara meningkatkan pelafalan siswa dengan menggunakan the lost twin game untuk siswa sekolah menengah pertama. Pengajaran pelafalan ini bukanlah hal yang mudah karena siswa sangat mudah bosan dalam belajar dan kurangnya motivasi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara secara tepat dan lancar. Di awal pembelajaran (pre-teaching) guru mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan siswa dengan memperlihatkan sebuah video atau gambar yang sesuai dengan materi yang diajarkan. Kemudian, (whilst-teaching) guru menerangkan ekspresi pada tindak tutur meminta dan memberi barang, melakukan kegiatan bermain peran, dan menerapkan the lost twin game di dalam kelas. Di akhir pembelajaran, (post-teaching) guru menyimpulkan pelajaran dan melakukan kegiatan yang mebuat siswa rileks belajar. Abstract

Vocabulary is an important factor in learning a language. People will not be able to listening, speaking, reading, and writing without mastering vocabulary. Also in learning English, vocabulary has an important role. However, not all of the Junior High School students learn vocabulary easily which is caused by the learning activity which is not really interesting for the students. Kick Me technique is astrategy which can be used by the teacher in teaching vocabulary to Junior High School students. Kick Me technique is an learning activity that students find the missing words in the worksheet on their classmates’ backs. Analogy and word relationships are given as a clue to finish it.
