Abstract

This paper is purposed to explain about teaching speaking for senior high school students through The English We Speak Activity, as one way to persuade students' interest in learning English. All of the four skills in English are covered by speaking. Thus, speaking is important to be learnt.However, it is found that there are many students have difficulties in speaking English. Some of the reasons are lack of material given and activity that is used in class.In using The English We Speak Activity, students will be given some very update phrases and words related to the lesson.Therefore, they will more interested in learning English especially speaking. This activity is applied in group and pair.The students can be collaborated in discussing their activity. Then, they have to make new conversation based on what they get before and perform it in front of the class in order to train them speak well.

Abstract

This article explains about teaching Action Verbs through Collocation Practice at the 7th Grade of Junior High School Students. Collocation Practice is one of techniques that combine pieces of Action Verbs with Noun and Adjective, where this technique can be done in the class as individual and group of work. Collocation Practice is a teaching technique that motivates and helps the students in understanding of Action Verbs. The students will be more active in learning process, and they can also give response well about material that has given by the teachers in the classroom.  Abstrak Artikel ini menjelaskan tentang pengajaran Action Verbs melalui teknik Collocation Practice yang diperuntukkan bagi siswa tingkat pertama Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Collocation Practice merupakan sebuah teknik pengajaran yang  menggabungkan potongan- potongan Action Verbs dibantu dengan Noun dan Adjective, yang nantinya teknik ini bisa dilakukan secara individu maupun berkelompok di kelas. Teknik Collocation Practice ini merupakan teknik pengajaran yang memotivasi dan membantu siswa dalam memahami Action Verbs. Siswa akan lebih aktif dalam kegiatan pembelajaran dan merespon dengan baik materi yang diajarkan oleh guru di kelas.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the students’ ability and their difficulties in using subordinate conjunctions. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The population in this research is second-year students of English Department at Universitas Negeri Padang. The sample was taken by using simple random sampling. There are at 33 students that become the sample of the research. In this research, the data were collected through the grammar test. Each students were asked to answer all questions by appropriate subordinate conjunctions. The data were scored in general and every part of the test to check the quality of the students’ ability in using subordinate conjunctions. The data collected and analyzed were categorized. Then, the researcher calculated the mean score of the students to determine the students' ability in using subordinate conjunctions for overall and each part. To knowing the students’ difficulties, the data were calculated the mean score of each part, it can be interpreted by the criteria. In this research, it was found that the second year students’ ability in using subordinate conjunctions at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang is fair because the average score of the students is 57,33. The students have good ability in answering question part. It was also found that the students have some difficulties in answering the question in part 1. It is difficult for them to decide what types of subordinate conjunctions that agree with the sentences based on its meaning.

Abstract

Classroom management is certainly concerned with behavior to create and maintain an effective learning experience. The effective classroom management includes the give of rewards and punishments. Therefore, giving rewards and punishments is important in order to increase students’ motivation in EFL classroom. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of reward and punishment as well as looking at the possible reasons that use by the teachers. This study employed qualitative research method. The subjects of this research are 3 teachers from Junior high school in Padang. The data were collected through the observation sheets and stimulated recall interviews (SRI). The findings show that (1) teachers mostly used the type of praise (49%) in giving spoken rewards and also teachers mostly used the type of nonverbal cues (54%) in giving spoken punishments. (2) The reasons that teachers give spoken rewards are to enhance students’ enthusiasm in learning English and to increase students’ motivates in learning process. Meanwhile, the reasons that teachers give spoken punishments are to change students’ behavior and to make students afraid to repeat the same mistakes during learning English. Therefore, it can be concluded that the types of spoken rewards and spoken punishments that mostly used by teachers are the first types are Praise and Use nonverbal cues. As a result, there are several reasons teachers give spoken rewards and spoken punishments to the students.

Abstract

AbstractIn the acceleration class, which students have higher intellegence than common students, some of them tend to dominate talk when they are asked to deliver their opinion about a problem given. Because of that, the writer want to improve English use spread evently and give the same opportunity to all students by using turn taking strategy. Abstract

Vocabulary (kosakata) is the core component of all aspects of language competences. Someone's vocabulary greatly affects the ability in learning language primarily for reading. Indonesian students who study English as a foreign language, especially junior high school students, have difficulty in reading English text. This is because their lack of mastery and knowledge of vocabulary and words that are not familiar so reading comprehension does not achieve. When students find difficult words in reading, they tend to ask the teacher or open dictionary directly. Thus, the level of students' understanding of the word is merely understand the interpretation not understand the meaning of words. Therefore, the author proposes a vocabulary learning strategies that students can use while reading, namely, Vocabulary Journal. This vocabulary journal is used by the students during reading, when they find words that are considered as difficult or unfamiliar. Those words are recorded into the journal so that students can remember and explore the word, by writing some of components associated with the word. The components are the meaning (makna kata), part of speech (kategori kata), a sentence, synonym or antonym, and a picture. By writing and understanding these components, students can understand the words and the text they read well. So the message or idea of the text can be achieved. Furthermore, by using this journal, students are expected become more self-sufficient in achieving the learning objectives.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the students’ ability in using transition signals. This research used descriptive qualitative. The population of this research was the second year students of English Department of Padang State University, Faculty of Languages and arts, who registered on 2011. This research sample is K2 (Educational Class) which is 25 students. Samples were taken using cluster sampling technique. Data were collected using written test. Based on data obtained, the students’ ability in using transition signals is average (60%) Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendiskripsikan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan transisi. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa tingkat II Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris tahun masuk 2011, Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, Universitas Negeri Padang. Sampel penelitian adalah K2 (Kelas Kependidikan) yang berjumlah 29 orang. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes tertulis. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, hasil kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan sinyal transisi adalah sedang (60%). Keywords: ability, transitions.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students reading barriers at English Department UNP. This research was done through the descriptive qualitative method with 212 populations. The samples of this study were 63 students chosen by using random sampling techniques. The data were collected through questionnaire adapted from Thong and Hao (2017). The findings of this research indicate that in language factors the most barriers chosen by students are the cultural background with percentage score 66,48% included as a high category, then, discourse included in an average category with 50,63 of the total percentage score of barrier that was chosen by students. Moreover, in the non-language factor, the psychological is the most barrier mostly chosen by the students that have the highest percentage score with 73,46% included in the high category, next, the indicator that is rarely chosen is reading habit with 59,56% of the total barriers which means it included in average criteria. Key words: reading, reading barriers, factor in reading barriers

Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini membahas tentang pembuatan learning video sebagai salah satu media pembelajaran berbasis e-learning. Dalam pembuatan learning video ini, penulis menggunakan salah satu software untuk e-learning yaitu camtasia studio 8. Penulis melihat bahwa dalam proses pembelajaran sering terjadi beberapa masalah yang mengakibatkan pemahaman yang masih kurang oleh siswa terhadap suatu materi. Selain itu siswa juga mengalami motivasi yang rendah dalam belajar karena guru lebih sering menggunakan media tradisional. Oleh karena itu penulis memberikan solusi dengan cara membuat sebuah learning video menggunakan camtasia studio sebagai media pembelajaran yang didistribusikan melalui pembelajaran berbasis e-learning. Camtasia studio 8 merupakan sebuah software yang dapat digunakan untuk merekam aktivitas layar computer dan juga power point. Penulis membuat makalah ini dengan tujuan: menghasilkan sebuah learning video sebagai media pembelajaran berbasis e-learning. Penulis berharap makalah ini dapat membantu guru dalam meningkatkan kualitas belajar siswa.   Kata kunci: Camtasia Studio 8, Learning Video, E-learning

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi penggunaan strategi belajar reading oleh mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris tingkat dua Universitas Negeri Padang dan melihat hubungan penggunaan strategi belajar reading tersebut dengan reading comprehension mereka. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian korelasi karena penelitian ini melihat tingkat hubungan antara dua variable yaitu strategi belajar reading siswa dengan reading comprehension mereka. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa tingkat dua Jurusan Bahasa & Sastra Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang. Tekhnik pengambilan sample adalah simple random sampling. Instrument yang digunakan adalah angket untuk melihat strategi belajar reading siswa, dan reading comprehension test untuk melihat reading comprehension siswa, kemudian dianalisis uji normalitas dan uji hipotesis. Dari hasil penelitian didapat strategi belajar reading yang paling banyak dipakai siswa adalah cognitive strategies dan affective strategies. Sedangkan strategi yang paling sedikit digunakan siswa adalah memory strategies. Tingkat hubungan antara strategi belajar reading siswa dengan pemahaman reading mereka sangat positif. Kata Kunci      : Language Learning Strategies in Reading, Reading Comprehension.
