Abstract

The purpose of this research were to (1) see the listening strategies used by the students of English department UNP, (2) see the strategies used by the students with higher test score (successful listeners) and the strategies used by the students with lower test score (unsuccessful listeners). The design of this research was descriptive research with population were the second-year students who have taken the Listening 1 subject. The sample of this research was the K4 class with 19 members. The instrument used was the SILL questionnaire which has 50 statements. The result of this research showed that the strategies used by the students from the most to the least were metacogntive strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, affective strategies, social strategies, and memory strategies. Students with higher test score were shown to use metacognitive strategies with high intensity, followed by cognitive strategies, affective strategies, social strategies, memory strategies and compensation strategies. Students with lower test score were shown to use the metacognitive strategies in medium intensity, followed by affective strategies, compensation strategies, social strategies, cognitive strategies and memory strategies. Abstract

In this paper the writer introduce a technique in teaching reading. The technique is Group Presentation. Group presentation is an activity which can helps students more active and improve students’ ability in critical reading. Teaching reading comprehension through Group Presentation involves students to think and works together in a group. Moreover students can train their reading comprehension and change their mind each other in their group. The writer hopes this paper will give contribution for the English teacher in teaching reading and also can improve the students’ interest in reading. ABSTRAK Dalam makalah ini penulis akan memperkenalkan sebuah tekhnik dalam mengerjakan reading yaitu dengan menggunakan Group Presentation. Group Presentation merupakan aktifitas yang dapat membantu siswa lebih aktif dan mengembangkan kemampuan siswa dalam membaca kritis. Pengajaran pemahaman membaca melalui tekhnik Group Presentation ini melibatkan siswa berfikir dan bekerjasama dalam suatu kelompok. Sehingga siswa dapat melatih pemahaman membaca mereka dan saling bertukar fikiran dengan anggota kelompoknya. Penulis berharap semoga pembahasan dalam makalah ini dapat memberikan kontribusi bagi guru dalam mengajarkan reading dan bisa meningkatkan minat siswa dalam membaca.

Abstract

This article aimed to describe the use of Vocabulary Dice Game in teaching vocabularyto elementary schoolstudents.Vocabulary Dice Game is versatile game that provides variety of instruction and can be adjusted depend on the needs of the objectives in vocabulary learning.Versatile game means, teacher can adjust what words the students need to learn, and create set of rules or instruction depend on students’ level. The versatility of this game canbenefit the learning process, not only making the students play through learning, but teacher will able to create a strategy in teaching vocabulary that is suitable to students characteristics and development.Vocabulary Dice game as teaching technique in the classroom provides fun and enjoyable learning process. Learning vocabulary is not always about drilling or repeating words but it can be done by act, draw or mime while playing game.By using this game, the learning process is expected to be fun and enjoyable for the students and enhance their memory about the material have been learned as it is obtained through enjoyable way.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify and to analyze the common type of English word stress errors made by the final year students of English Department at Universitas Negeri Padang based on Academic Word List and also to find out the students’ level of error in English word stress. The research subject was K2-2016 class which consisted of 30 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The technique of data collection was speaking test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Speech Analyzer Software. From the result of the test, the researcher found that the common type of stress error that made by the students was misplaced stress (81.8%) from all the errors occured. The mean of students’ level of error in English word stress was 45.9% which categorized as low error level.Key words: Word Stress, Stress Error, Level of Error

Abstract

AbstrakUntuk dapat menguasai bahasa Inggris terdapat empat keterampilan yang harus dipelajari siswa SMA, yaitu speaking, listening, reading, dan writing. Writing adalah salah satu keterampilan berbahasa yang dianggap sulit oleh sebagian besar siswa. Dalam belajar dan mengajar bahasa Inggris, terdapat berbagai masalah yang kerap dihadapi guru dan murid. Salah satunya, pemilihan media yang tepat untuk siswa dengan materi ajar tertentu. Dari segi siswa, motivasi merupakan masalah utama dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Paper ini ditulis untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana video infotainment dapat digunakan sebagai media alternative dalam mengajarkan discussion text. Salah satu alasan dalam memilih video infotainment dalam media pengajaran writing of discussion text adalah karena infotainment sangat dekat dengan kehidupan sehari-hari siswa, terlihat ringan, dan menarik bagi siswa.Keyword: Menulis, Infotainment video

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability to get information in a text and be able to interpret it appropriately. Reading comprehension is combination information from a text and own background knowledge to understanding the message conveyed by the author. However, not all of the Junior High School students learn reading comprehension easily which is caused by the learning activity which is not really interesting so that the students get bored.A blend of methods and media which the writer trying to describe in this paper, is expected to improve students' skills in reading comprehension. The media used is comic strips and theapplying method is PQRST. It is kinds of activity where students are ask to read a comic and trying to understand quickly what the story is contained in the comic.

Abstract

AbstrakMakalah ini menyajikan teori-teori dan alasan menggunakan English Language Teaching Rap (ELT-Rap) dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dalam hal ini keahlian berbicara pada teks Interpersonal dan Transactional untuk siswa sekolah menengah atas. ELT-Rap adalah belajar bahasa inggris dimana music Rap dilibatkan dalam kegiatan-kegiatan pembelajaran. Selanjutnya, makalah ini membahas alasan, manfaat, dan prosedur penggunaan dari ELT-Rap sebagai kegiatan berkelanjutan dalam pembelajaran yang mengeksplorasi teks. Dalam pembahasannya, terdapat keterangan lebih mendalam atas manfaat dari ELT-Rap dari sisi berbicara dengan konteks yang lebih nyata dan keadaan yang lebih santai, pengembangan keahlian fonem, pengetahuan fonologi, penguasaan perbendaharaan kata, dan mengiramakan dialog menjadi bentuk pembelajaran yang menarik. Makalah Ini juga membahas manfaat yang diberikan selain dari sisi penguasaan bahasa dan juga dari sisi manajemen kelas diantaranya penyusunan tempat duduk, sikap belajar siswa, penilaian diri, pemikiran kritis, dan kenyamanan sosial.Key words: ELT Rap, English language teaching, Interpersonal text, Transactional text.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the ability of second year students of SMAN 3 Sijunjung in transferring active voice into passive voice in simple sentences. This research was limited to students' ability to transfer active into passive voice in simple past tense and present tense. The research design was descriptive quantitative. The population of this research was the second grade students of SMAN 2 Sijunjung. The population was 96 students from 3 classes, XI IPA, XI IPS1 and XI IPS2. The sample was taken by cluster random sampling technique so that the number of sample obtained was 29 samples. The instrument used was a grammar test for 60 minutes. Based on this research, the ability of second year students of SMAN 3 Sijunjung to transfer active into passive voice was in the category B (good). While, there were some questions that students have not understood how to transfer. It can be seen that 13% of students transfer incorrectly based on the placement of subject, 15% of students transfer incorrectly based on inappropriate use of be, and 28% of students transfer incorrectly based on verb changes. So, the most difficult aspect in transferring active into passive voice based on verb changes. Students were expected to better understand how to transfer active to passive voice by not paying attention to forming sentences properly.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh penggunaan strategi Think-Talk-Write pada pengajaran menulis teks eksposisi analitikal terhadap pencapaian menulis siswa. Populasinya adalah siswa kelas XI SMA N 10 Padang tahun pelajaran 2013/2014 dengan sampel XI IPS 2 (kelas eksperimen) dan XI IPS 1 (kelas kontrol). Kelas eksperimen diajar menggunakan strategi Think-Talk-Write sedangkan kelas kontrol diajar menggunakan strategi pengajaran yang biasa dilakukan oleh guru di sekolag tersebut. Setelah treatment, diberikan post-test. Berdasarkan analisis nilai dengan rumus t-test, nilai t-hitung (2,33) lebih besar dari t-tabel (1,690). Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan strategi Think-Talk-Write pada pengajaran menulis teks eksposisi analitikal memberikan dampak yang lebih baik terhadap pencapaian menulis siswa. Abstract

AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kemampuan grammar mahasiswa dalam menggunakan one, another, the other, other, others, and the others as indefinite and definite adjectives/pronouns serta persepsi mereka dalam proses perkuliahan. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 30 orang mahasiswa tingkat II Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris tahun masuk 2011/2012 yang diambil secara acak. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan untuk mendapatkan data adalah tes grammar dimana mahasiswa diminta untuk mengisi kalimat rumpang dengan one, another, the other, other, others, atau the others. Waktu yang diberikan untuk mengerjakan tes adalah 90 menit. Untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa tentang proses perkuliahan, mereka diminta untuk mengisi angket yang berisi 19 pernyataan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan grammar mahasiswa dalam menggunakan one, another, the other, other, others, dan the others adalah lemah (47.72%). Hal ini dibuktikan dari hasil pengisian angket oleh mahasiswa bahwa lemahnya kemampuan mahasiswa disebabkan oleh materi yang terlalu sedikit penjelasannya dan ketertarikan dan motivasi mahasiswa untuk belajar yang terlalu lemah.Key words: Indefinite adjective, definite adjective, indefinite pronoun, definite pronoun, perception
