Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan penerapan salah satu strategi yang disebut dengan K.I.M (Key word, Information, and Memory clue) Vocabulary yang berfungsi untuk melatih siswa dalam memahami kosa kata. Di awal pelajaran, guru memberikan sebuah teks bacaan. Setelah itu, guru langsung menyuruh siswa untuk mencari makna dari kata yang telah ditentukan dalam kolom pertama. Kolom pertama disebut dengan Key word digunakan untuk kosa kata. Selanjutnya kolom kedua disebut Information berfungsi untuk makna dari kosa kata tersebut. Kolom ketiga disebut Memory Clue digunakan untuk gambar. Terakhir, siswa disuruh membuat kalimat tentang kosa kata tersebut. Diharapkan dengan adanya strategi ini, siswa dapat memahami kosa kata lebihmen dalam lagi sehingga mereka tidak menganggap mempelajari kosa kata tersebut membosankan dan menyita banyak waktu. Abstract

Analytical exposition text is one of genre text that is learned by english department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The students must be able to write this genre text. The aim of this study is to analyze the ability of students in writing an analytical exposition text.  It was a descriptive quantitative research conducted for third semester English departments students of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research focused on how is the students’ ability in writing the thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence of analytical exposition text. The population of this research is third semester English department of Unicersitas Negeri Padang, and the sample was from educational class, it was K-3 class which consists of 20 students. the students were asked to write analytical exposition text and then students’ writing were analyzed by using the rubric of analytical exposition text which consists of four aspect, that are thesis statement, argumentation, organization and writing, and the use of evidence. Based on the findings, there are four students who are in excellent level, five students in proficient level, ten students in fair level, and one student in inadequate level. Overall, the ability of third semester English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang is in proficient level.

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa ringkas, terpercaya, jelas, dan benar karya tulis mahasiswa. Sampel adalah mahasiswa tahun ketiga di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang. Data berasal dari tes tertulis. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, 66% dari tulisan mahasiswa dikategorikan sedang, 32% dari tulisan mahasiswa dikategorikan Buruk, dan 2% dari tulisan mahasiswa dikategorikan Sangat Buruk.  Keringkasan tulisan siswa dikategorikan sedang, dan buruk untuk kredibilitas, kejelasan, dan kebenaran. Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of “Guided Reading” startegy in teaching reading especially in teaching narrative text. In this stategy, the teacher chooses the text which is appropriate with the students’ ability and the teacher uses a picture to develop their background knowledge. Guided Reading strategy is begun by dividing the students into some groups that consist of 3-4 members. After that, the teacher distributes the text to each member of the group and prepares students to read the text by developing their background knowledge, knowing the vocabulary from the text, and knowing the purpose of reading the text. After knowing the purpose of reading the text, students read the text silently in order to increase the students’ concentration. After reading the text, the teacher provides worksheets that contain assignments to connect the story (narrative text) with the students’ experience and discuss it in group. Then, the student asks to rewrite the story which is helped by answering some questions that have been provided by the teacher. The last, the teacher gives tests to the students to find out their understanding and comprehending about the text. By using this strategy, the students are hoped having better English reading skill especially in reading narrative text.

Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini membahas tentang penggunaan TitanPad Website sebagai media dalam mengajar menulis sebuah  hortatory exposition text di kelas XI Sekolah Menengah Atas. Dalam menggunakan TitanPad, guru harus menyiapkan kelas khusus yang menyediakan komputer dengan akses internet dan projector. Dengan menggunakan TitanPad Website, siswa akan bekerja berkelompok dengan menggunakan komputer mereka masing-masing untuk menghasilkan sebuah hortatory exposition text melalui kegiatan collaborative writing. Kegiatan ini meliputi (1) brainstorming tentang topik yang diberikan; (2) planning idea yang akan dijadikan kerangka untuk menulis; (3) writing dimana siswa mulai menulis secara individu; (4) editing dimana siswa akan memberikan koreksi pada tulisan dari anggota kelompok dan (5) final product dimana tulisan siswa akan ditampilkan di depan kelas. Dengan menggunakan TitanPad Website, siswa akan dapat mengembangkan ide serta meningkatkan grammar mereka di dalam menulis sebuah hortatory exposition text. Guru juga dapat memantau pekerjaan pekerjaan siswa dengan TitanPad melalui komputernya. Oleh karena itu, TitanPad dapat menjadi sebuah media yang tepat dalam membantu guru memantau kegiatan siswa di dalam kelas dan membangkitkan minat siswa untuk bekerja bersama dalam menulis sebuah hortatory exposition text. Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the type and the level of speaking anxiety faced by the forth semester students of English Education Study Program of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. This descriptive research used a quantitative descriptive method. The research instruments are questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire used in this research is adapted from the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) designed by Horwitz. It consists of 33 statements which have three categories as well as communication apprehension, fear of speaking test, and fear of feedback by peers and lecturer. Based on the research analysis, it was found that the level of students’ speaking anxiety is in the middle level with the percentage was 82%. It was significantly different with other levels which had 9% for low level and also 9% for high level. The types faced by the respondents were in the fear of speaking test (44%), communication apprehension (34%), and feedback by peers and lecturer (22%). The dominant typeof speaking anxiety was fear of speaking test. However, after having the depth interview about their speaking anxiety, the research showed that all types of speaking anxiety were in the relationship. Key words: Speaking, Anxiety

Abstract

AbstractMany students have difficulties in speaking.Lack of ideas is the main problem that students face in speaking.It is influenced by lack of mastery of vocabulary and pronouncing words. Based on these problems an appropriate teaching technique is needed to help students improve theirspeaking ability and self-confidence. This paper aims to explain how to improve students’ speaking skill by using dubbing video technique. Dubbing video is process of fill the sound of the video where the original soundtrack is turned off. There are some stages implementing video dubbing which are; active viewing, freeze framing and prediction, silent viewing, sound on and vision off activity, repetition and role play, reproduction activity, dubbing video activity, and follow-up activity. The objective of this paper is to help the students expressing their idea based on the video that they watch in order to improve their speaking skill and self-confidence

Abstract

Abstrak Siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) pada umumnya mengalami kesulitan dalam menulis sebuah recount text. Hal ini disebabkan karena siswa Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP) kesulitan mencari ide yang akan dikembangkan menjadi sebuah teks. Tidak adanya aktivitas dan media pembelajaran yang menuntun dan memotivasi siswa untuk menggunakan imajinasi dalam menemukan dan menyusun ide-ide tersebut juga menjadi penghalang dalam menulis recount text. Maka dari itu penulis mengusulkan penggunaan Storybird web 2.0 tool untuk membantu siswa mengumpulkan ide-ide dan meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam menulis recount text. Storybird adalah salah satu media online yang difokuskan pada kegiatan membaca dan menulis. Storybird dilengkapi dengan gambar-gambar yang menarik sehingga siswa akan termotivasi untuk menulis. Dengan memanfaatkan Storybird sebagai media pembelajaran menulis recount text, siswa akan tertantang untuk membuat sebuah online story book berkolaborasi dengan siswa lain. Selain itu guru dapat membuat recount text sendiri sebagai materi pembelajaran dengan menggunakan Storybird sehingga pembelajaran akan lebih menarik. Storybird juga menyediakan virtual classroom sehingga guru dapat memantau kegiatan siswa, memberikan tugas dan menilai hasil kerja siswa. Kata kunci: Recount text, Storybird, Story book.

Abstract

Speaking is a basic skill that should be mastered by students besides the other skills. However, they find difficultes to speak English. it is caused lack sel-self confident, lack vocabulary, they are difficult to pronounce the words, they have interest to learn English. Therefore, the writer chooses Australia - Asia Debate strategy as a form of speaking practice to encourage students to be active, and confident in a discussion. So, they accustomed to express their ideas in English. In Australia - Asia Debate strategy, students are divided in two teams. They discuss the topic that is given by the teacher. The first team agrees with the topic and the second team disagrees about the topic. Each of team is given an opportunity to tell their ideas and responds the other arguments. By using this strategy, students are expected to improve their ability in speaking.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain three kinds of play- musical chair, chain messege, and snake and ladder- and how to involve them in teaching English in order to accommodate students learning style (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) for young students. It is hoped that it can inspire teacher to involve play in their teaching.AbstrakTujuan dari penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana caranya melibatkan ketiga jenis permainan, yaitu musical chair, chain message, dan snake and ladder ke dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris agar dapat mengakomodasi ketiga jenis gaya belajar siswa yaitu kinestetik, auditori, dan visual. Makalah ini disusun berdasarkan sejumlah kajian pustaka yang nantinya diharapkan dapat menginspirasi guru untuk melibatkan permainan dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris.
