Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. Abstract

The demand for the need to start learning English from an early age has made many experts try to find methods to improve English language method. As an early reference in learning to speak foreign language is the ability to speak the language as earlier as possible. Therefore, the teaching of speaking foreign languages to the early childhood must be considered.The very complex characteristics of early childhood students are also a reference to how to make successes in teaching methods for the right students to achieve learning objectives. Early students are students who are in the play phase and still like to imitate. Therefore, the author offers Barbie Games as one of the methods of teaching English for young children. Barbie games are a mixture of role playing and contextual teaching, where students are directly involved in the pronunciation, repetition and vocabulary in the form of playing with Barbie as a medium.

Abstract

AbstractThis paper aims to explain how to improve students’ ability in speaking at Junior High School by using ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method. Speaking is one of the language skills that should be mastered by students in learning English, especially for Junior High School students. In learning speaking, the students should be able to have a good ability in speaking. They have to participate actively and create a life communication in speaking class. However, students have some problems in learning speaking. The students are not confident to share their idea and afraid of making mistakes in learning speaking. Furthermore, they keep using their own language (mother tongue). The students have low motivation because the teacher still uses conventional method in teaching speaking. Considering the problems, an appropriate method is needed to help students improve their speaking ability as well as to overcome their problems and weakness.  The writer introduces ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method. In this method, firstly the teacher gets the class interested and engaged, then they study something, and then they try to activate it by putting it into production.Keywords: Teaching Speaking, ESA Method, Junior High School

Abstract

AbstrakSnake word Game adalah sebuah permainan kata berantai yang mana guru menulis huruf, kemudian siswa pertama harus menulis kata yang awalnya harus sama dengan kata yang di tulis guru. Siswa selanjutnya menulis kata yang awal katanya dimulai dari huruf akhir kata sebelumnya. Snake word game diharapkan membantu guru dalam mengajar kosa kata bahasa Inggris dan membuat siswa mengingat kosa kata dengan lebih mudah. Permainan ini membutuhkan kerja sama kelompok.Kata kunci: Snake -Word Game, teaching vocabulary at junior high school.

Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of using songs to teach English to young learners. The songs that can be used are popular songs for young learners. At the beginning of the activity, teacher introduces the lyrics that will be sung.  The lyrics of the song should be compared with the topic. The activity of singing a song can be followed by another activities which the activities can improve their confidence. There are some advantages in teaching English through songs like various activities in the classroom, fun, and alive, also the young learners be active and confidence. Then, songs can improve the young learner’s skill in memorizing new words and pronouncing clearly. Using songs as the activity in teaching English help the teacher to build an active and interesting class.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to (1) describe the ability of the third year students at English Department in arranging words intonoun phrase with pre-modifiers, (2) know what the causes of the deviations in arranging noun phrase. The data of this study were gathered by using grammar test which had 40 group of words which were arranged into noun phrase. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the ability of the students was poor. The average of the score was 46.12 from 29 students as the sample. Meanwhile, the data which were taken from interview showed that the deviations happened because they did not know the order of the modifiers in the noun phrase.

Abstract

This article discusses about the use of One Minute Life Story in teaching speaking to senior high school students. Speaking is one of the four main skills in language that should be mastered by the students especially in English. To support and increase students’ speaking ability, teacher can use One Minute Life Story as an activity in the classroom. One minute life story is a part storytelling activity but it has the difference which is limited by the time. In this paper, the way of using it may be different because English is a foreign language in Indonesia. So that, one minute time is extended and become five minutes, by using One Minute Life Story it is expected that students can practice and increase their speaking ability with a different way.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the type and the level of speaking anxietyfaced by the EFL freshmen students in English Language Educational Program of English Department at Universitas Negeri Padang. This descriptive research used a quantitative descriptive method. The research instruments are questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire used in this research is adapted from the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) designed by Horwitz. It consists of 33 statements which have three categories as well as communication apprehension, fear of speaking test, and fear of feedback by peers and lecturer. Based on the research analysis, it was found that the level of students’ speaking anxiety is in the middle level with the percentage was 82%. It was significantly different with other levels which had 9% for low level and also 9% for high level. The types faced by the respondents were in the fear of speaking test (44%), communication apprehension (34%), and feedback by peers and lecturer (22%). The dominant type of speaking anxiety was fear of speaking test. However, after having the depth interview about their speaking anxiety, the research showed that all types ofspeaking anxiety were in the relationship.

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk menjelaskan manfaat membuat majalah kelas dalam mengajarkan teks naratif untuk siswa SMP kelas tiga. Melalui pengajaran ini diharapkan siswa bisa meningkatkan kemampuannya dalam menulis teks naratif. Majalah tersebut berisikan semua hasil tulisan siswa tentang naratif teks sebagai produk dari apa yang mereka tulis selama proses belajar. Dengan membuat majalah kelas, proses belajar akan menyenangkan dengan suasana yang tidak monoton dan merasakan suasana belajar yang lebih baik dari sebelumnya dan siswa akan terbantu dalam menulis karena siswa diajarkan step by step. Banyak sekali manfaat yang dapat dirasakan baik oleh guru maupun siswa melalui pembuatan project seperti ini. Adapun manfaat bagi guru adalah guru akan terbantu dalam mengajar dan bisa mengontrol setiap aktifitas yang dilakukan siswa selama menulis. Adapun manfaat untuk siswa, mereka akan lebih termotivasi dalam menulis karena tulisan mereka dipublikasikan. Oleh karena itu, untuk menunjang kelangsungan proses belajar mengajar dan menarik perhatian siswa untuk belajar aktif dan memahami pelajaran lebih mudah, maka mengadakan suatu project seperti pembuatan majalah kelas sangat dianjurkan sekali dalam proses pembelajaran.Key words: Class magazine project, teaching writing a narrative text, junior high school.

Abstract

This research is a quantitative-correlational research that measures the stage of the motivation of the students in learning speaking subject and their speaking ability in English. In addition the population of this research is the under-graduate students of English for education department, Faculty Language and Arts academic year 2017, Universitas Negeri Padang and the sample is chosen by using cluster sampling. Furthermore, the problem backgrounded this research is how the relationship between students’ motivation in learning speaking and the speaking ability. For this research, motivation is treated as the x variable and speaking ability as y variable. The instruments used in this research are questionnaire and test. The questionnaire is used to measure the motivation and test for the speaking ability. The questionnaire used is adapted from the The Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) by Gardner. The questionnaire was analyzed by using likert scale and speaking test by using speaking rubrics by Brown. The result of this researchshows that there is a relationship between the motivation and speaking ability of tye students. It is shown by the correlational coefficient (rxy) with number 0,002. However, the relationship is not significant because when it is compared with rtable with (α) 5%, the number is 0,3494. It means that rtable > rxy. Thus, it can be concluded that the relationship between x variable and y variable is not significant, Keywords: speaking ability, motivasion, correlational research

Abstract

Abstrak Artikel ini ditulis untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana guru dapat menggunakan strategi pembelajaran proyek cerita teater dalam mengajarkan keterampilan menulis (writing) teks naratif kepada siswa sekolah menengah atas. Hal ini bertujuan untuk membiasakan siswa dalam menulis sebuah cerita dalam teks naratif dengan menggunakan bahasa Inggris, meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berfikir kritis dalam kelompok, meningkatkan rasa percaya diri siswa untuk menampilkan hasil tulisan mereka pada papan bulletin kelas atau sekolah dan dalam newsletter. Guru dapat menggunakan strategi ini untuk memenuhi standar kompetensi dan kompetensi dasar yang dituntut dalam kurikulum sekolah menengah atas. Tahapan pembelajaran inti menggunakan strategi ini terbagi kedalam tiga tahap mengajar: eksplorasi, elaborasi dan konfirmasi. Dengan menggunakan strategi proyek cerita teater, siswa akan terfasilitasi untuk mengembangkan gagasannya untuk menulis sebuah cerita dan meningkatkan kreatifitasnya dalam mendekorasi tampilan cerita menjadi semenarik mungkin sehingga cerita tersebut menjadi menyenangkan untuk dibaca.   Key Words: Writing, strategy, story theater project, newsletter
