Journal of English Language Teaching
Journal of English Language Teaching is a journal published by English Language Teaching Study Program of FBS Universitas Negeri Padang. This journal is published three times a year (March, June, and September). The main purpose of this journal is to advance and foster English Language Teaching or education, research, and professionalism in Indonesia. The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

This research aimed to figure out whether CSR gives positive effect toward VIII Grade students’ ability in reading at SMP N 11 Padang. Since this reserach was experimental research, the sample of this research were VIII B as the control group and VIII C as the experimental group selected by using cluster sampling. The data of this research was reading test (posttest) scores which were analyzed by using t-test. It was found that there was significant difference on student’ reading comprehension of grade VIII students who were taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and the students taught by using conventional technique. The result showed that tcount was 6.7 and ttable was 2.00 in the level of significant 0.05 which means tcount was higher than ttable. Therefore, the null htpothesis (H0) was rejected and research hyphothesis (H1) was accepted. Finally, it could be concluded that CSR (Collaborative Strategic Reading) gives possitive effect toward students’ ability in reading.

Nowadays english has been taught for all kind of education since elementary until university. However, almost of students think that English as difficult subject, as a result they feel boring when learning English especially learning grammar. Furthermore, the teacher must find the appropriate technique to motivate the students. One of the appropriate techniques that can be use is word by word games. Word by word games is a game that can be done by the teacher and the students in learning English. In this game the teacher make students in groups and every group will give a key word to develop until correctly grammatical sentences. This game can motivate students in learning English so that they not feel boring. Abstrak Pada saat ini pelajaran bahasa Inggris telah diajarkan pada semua jenjang pendidikan seperti sekolah dasar, sekolah menengah pertama, sekolah menengah atas hingga universitas. Namun,hampir seluruh siswa beranggapan bahwa pelajaran bahasa Inggris merupakan mata pelajaran yang dianggap sulit sehingga mereka cendrung merasa bosan ketika berhadapan dengan mata pelajaran ini, terutama sekali pada saat belajar grammar.Untuk itu, guru harus dapat menggunakan cara yang tepat agar siswa dapat termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris.Salah satu cara yang cocok untuk memotivasi siswa sekolah menengah pertama untuk belajar grammar adalah dengan menggunakan sebuah permainan yang dikenal dengan “word by word game”. Word by word game adalah sebuah permainan yang dilakukan oleh guru dan siswa agar siswa menyukai pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Pada permainan ini guru membagi siswa dalam beberapa kelompok dan memberikan sebuah kata kunci kepada setiap kelompok untuk dikembangkan kedalam sebuah kalimat dengan struktur atau pola yang benar. Permainan ini dapat memotivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa inggris sehingga mereka tidak mudah bosan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.

AbstractThis paper discusses how to use Pairs Check Strategy in teaching reading comprehension on narrative text at Junior High School. Based on the writers’ experience in teaching English, many students find the difficulties in reading, especially reading narrative text. The teacher can use Pair Check Strategy to teach reading comprehension in teaching and learning process. This strategy is applied to help students solve problems in reading. This strategy allows the students to share ideas, opinion, and check their comprehension each other with their discussion pairs. By applying the Pairs Check Strategy in reading narrative text, the teacher can reach the goal of teaching narrative text to junior high school students. In other words, this strategy can help teacher in teaching reading narrative text to the students.Keywords: Teaching reading, reading comprehension, narrative text, pairs check strategy.

Chemical Department has used references including some textbooks written in English as the medium of instruction in teaching and learning process. Some students find difficulties to understand textbooks written in English because of some reasons which brings out different perceptions about the use of references in English to the student. This research aims to find out Chemistry students’ perception of using refernces written in English. This research is a quantitative research which used descriptive method. There were 56 Chemistry students as the sample of this research which choosen by using cluster sampling technique. The istrument used in this research is the questionnaire about students’ perception which based on three perception indicator; absorption, understanding and evaluation. The findings shows that the students have positive perception toward the use of refernces written in English viewed from absorption and evaluation indicator, and negative perception viewed from understanding indicator.

AbstractThis article discusses the use of techniques of adapting an interactive news program of "Suara Anda" in increasing student motivation for learning speaking at Senior high school. As programs, students are divided into several groups. Teachers provide multiple options displayed in power point news. One group choose one video and teachers play it. The group filed comments, suggestions or opinion about that news. Other groups may be added comment or suggestions. The process continues until all groups had a turn. At the end of the lesson the students were assigned to make a report or journal of the news.Key Words: speaking, interactive news program, suara anda

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana tulisan siswa di dalam menulis teks analytical exposition di lihat dari struktur teks analytical exposition itu sendiri, yaitu Thesis, Argument, dan Reiteration. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan rubrik penilaian yang di adaptasi dari teori Hamp-Lyons yang digunakan oleh tim assessors yang ahli di bidang writing dan penulis sendiri untuk menilai tulisan siswa tersebut. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah menulis teks analytical exposition berdasarkan tiga buah topik berbeda. Penelitian ini dilakukan di MAN 2 Padang untuk siswa kelas XII tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Jumlah tulisan siswa yang terkumpul adalah 100 buah teks, dan 25 buah teks di ambil secara acak sebagai sampel untuk di analisis. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis thesis, argument dan reiteration termasuk kedalam kategori good. Untuk hasil yang lebih baik lagi, guru Bahasa Inggris diharapkan untuk banyak memberikan latihan menulis kepada siswa untuk berbagai jenis teks di dalam Bahasa Inggris, khususnya teks analytical exposition. Bagi peneliti selanjutnya dapat menggunakan penelitian ini sebagai referensi untuk mengembangkan penelitian berkaitan dengan teks analytical exposition yang lebih baik lagi kedepannya.

Abstrak Makalah ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan cara pengajaran writing narrative text dengan menggunakan probable passage strategy. Strategi probable passage merupakan cara yang komunikatif dalam pengajaran writing. Seorang guru membimbing siswa untuk memulai menulis teks naratif dengan memperkenalkan beberapa kosa kata inti yang terdiri dari kata kerja, kata sifat, tokoh, latar, masalah, penyelesaian masalah, dan akhir cerita. Guru menjelaskan setiap kata kunci yang diberikan, baik itu arti kata maupun penggunaannya dalam kalimat. Guru juga perlu mengelompokkan beberapa kata yang bisa digunakan dalam satu kalimat, seperti yang ada dalam teks naratif sebenarnya. Berdasarkan kata kunci tesebut, siswa mencoba menulis sebuah teks naratif berdasarkan apa yang mereka pahami dari kata kunci yang diberikan oleh guru. Dengan menggunakan strategi probable passage, siswa akan lebih mudah untuk menulis sebuah teks naratif.

This study aimed to investigate senior high school students’ attitude towards advantages of learning literature in English. The participants of this research were 22 eleventh grade students in SMAN 2 Padang who took English as Specialization class. This study was descriptive qualitative research used in investigating senior high school students’ attitude towards literature in English. The instrumentations of this research were questionnaire and interview. The following are advantages of learning literature in English, encouraging language sources, improving language skill, expanding students’ awareness through environment and willingness to learn English language. The findings of the research showed that students’ attitude towards advantages of learning literature in English is positive.

Abstrak Tujuan penulisan artikel ini adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana cara menggunakan media Mr.Bean video dalam mengajarkan recount text untuk siswa SMP. Kemampuan menulis adalah salah satu keterampilan yang harus diajarkan di sekolah. Namun pada kenyataannya masih banyak siswa yang mempunyai masalah dalam menulis. Permasalahan tersebut yaitu ada sebagian siswa yang memiliki keterbatasan ide dalam menulis. Selanjutnya, hampir seluruh siswa beranggapan menulis itu membosankan, sehingga mereka tidak tertarik untuk menulis. Kemudian, menulis adalah suatu hal yang sulit karena mereka harus memikirkan tenses dan pemilihan kosakata yang benar di dalam sebuah kalimat. Berawal dari kenyataan ini, penulis tertarik untuk mengangkat dan mengajukan media Mr. Bean video sebagai salah satu media yang efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman siswa dalam menulis recount text. Video “ Mr Bean ini diaplikasikan tidak hanya menarik dan lucu, tetapi juga karena ini merupakan media yang tepat untuk memperkenalkan kepada siswa tentang unsur-unsur yang ada pada recount text. Khususnya pada video “ Mr. Bean was at the library ” dalam video ini tidak terdapat dialog atau percakapan, sehingga dengan menggunakan video ini siswa tersebut dapat menulis recount text dengan baik tanpa harus mendengarkan percakapan atau membaca running text nya. Selain itu, siswa juga akan jauh lebih fokus kepada “content” dari video nya tersebut. Video ini dapat digunakan untuk mengajar penulisan teks recount kepada siswa SMP kelas delapan. AbstractThis article explains about how to apply “what is the question game” in teaching speaking to junior high school students. To do this game, students are divided into four groups and each of group has same amount of students. There are three steps that should be done by the teacher when he/ she applies this game. The first is preparation in which the teacher prepares topic that suitable with this game, lesson plan, material for teaching and media. The second is activity I, in this step the teacher explains expression that are used in introduction. Then, the teacher explains question form of expression of introduction. The third is activity II, the teacher invite students to play “what is the question game” and among this game the teacher sing song together with students. After completing the game, the teacher concludes the lesson at the day and closes the class.Key words: Game, Technique, Junior High School
