Abstract

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indonesian government has implemented the 5M health protocol (washing hands, maintaining distance, wearing masks, avoiding crowds, maintaining body immunity). Along with the appeal for the use of masks for the general public, non-medical covers made of cloth (cloth masks) with various and unique designs have emerged, specifically to support a lifestyle. From the results of observations through several sources, there is another need for cloth masks, namely for nonverbal communication on facial expressions (facial kinesics). When using a mask, facial expressions are often invisible, especially in mouth movements (lips). This nonverbal communication will undoubtedly be needed for both the deaf and speech-impaired people and society in general. This study aims to determine the characteristics of non-medical cloth mask materials that can support the convenience of facial kinesic non-verbal communication. The material is also considered in terms of visual aesthetics so that the mask can still keep the appearance of everyday attire. This study uses a qualitative approach with experimental methods on several non-medical masks with various material variations. The results showed that masks with a combination of transparent materials such as synthetic organza dove fabric (polyamide) and PVC plastic were sufficient to help nonverbal communication on facial expressions while still having droplet and aerosol protection. This research needs to be improved by utilizing filtration technology to make the mask more comfortable.

Technically research, this virtual photoshoot implementation method is something new and has never happened before. The virtual photoshoot implementation method is applied in in-game screenshots and Google Street View, where virtual photoshoots offer a shooting process by taking pictures through an LCD monitor using video call software such as Zoom, Facetime, and Google Meet to bring up photo objects. Aesthetically, this study found that the results of photos from virtual photoshoots led to photography techniques that were not widely used before in conventional shooting, namely displaying the blur effect on photos using glasses or bottles. The blur effect that is usually produced through lens settings can also be produced with a glass or bottle.

Abstract

Comics, although they were heavily debated in relation to their position in the fine arts discourse, in the end, they were increasingly accepted, especially since the 1960s. Since then, comic characteristics have been identified and it has been found that the representations presented in comics tend to be more particular, specific, and contextual so that they are often used to represent certain cultural contexts. The comic titled Story of A Boy, A Mother, and A Mountain, which was exhibited at the 2018 Indonesian Art Award (IAA), did not try not relate to a particular cultural context - at least not explicitly -. But for readers who understand the context, and have knowledge of the myths of Mount Tangkuban Parahu or the Legend of Sangkuriang, they will most likely link in that direction based on their background, plot, and symbolic representation. Tangkuban Parahu Mountain itself is a mountain located in West Java and its existence is closely related to Sundanese traditions and culture. Behind the existence of the mountain which is one of the important tourist attractions in West Java, there is a widely known myth, often called the Legend of Sangkuriang. The myth of the Sangkuriang legend is retold in the form of comics without narrative text, without face visualization, and uses more panels that are fluid and dynamic. The reason behind the aesthetic consideration is the emphasis on the unconscious aspect as an expression of the concept of the "Oedipus complex" in Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis, the emphasis of the work not on the narrative, but on its sensations and passions, as the Nietzsche's Dionysian concept, as well as the historical-cultural aspects of comic artists who want to present comics and stories that fit their personal background, also expect an authenticity that emerges from West Javanese culture and Sundanese traditions.

Abstract

Digitalization has brought new complexity to the issue of archival photographs of artworks. This paper explores the relationship between two-dimensional artwork and its representation in the form of digital archive photos. The author mobilizes the concept of the relation between representamens and objects in Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of signs. Based on the analyses carried out in this paper, the presence of the Icon and Index feels very strong in the case of archival photographs of works of art. This finding stresses the need of two types of archival photos of works, namely primary photos and secondary photos. Classification is carried out based on the level of similarity in the representation seen in the archive photo.
