Abstract

The participation approach has long been recognized in sustainable design projects. Some recent material innovations strive for demonstrating community participation in their design process to achieve a sustainable outcome. However, the terminology of participation can be perceived and implemented differently for actors involved in the process. Responding to the diverse understanding of participation, this paper tries to examine the implementation of participation in the making of two well-known renewable materials innovations, namely Totomoxtle and Pinatex. The methodology used in this research is a comparative descriptive which is analyzed through literature and comparative studies by referring to the ladder of participation theory by Arnstein, the form of participation by White, and the participation in design by Lee. Based on the analysis, there are different levels of participation held by actors and also various forms of participation occur in the design process. Moreover, the comparative studies also show that the actors who occupy a similar level of participation do not directly comprise a similar form and function of participation. However, the diverse forms and levels of participation in sustainable innovation establish a different type of relation and space for interaction between designers and other actors involved.

Abstract

Benjang ritual performance is a traditional performance born from cultural ceremonies that still survive and are carried out today, especially by the younger generation. Through the functional mindset and lifestyle of Bandung's young people today, Ritual Benjang is present through its distinctive features in the experience of quality ritual beauty and is believed to achieve the life goals of the people of Uj Berung Bandung. Furthermore, the show symbolizes the existence of Benjang as a medium to get closer to God and as a sports activity supporting sportsmanship. This study uses a qualitative method with observation and perception based on phenomena. The concept of taste Sahrdaya becomes a foundation for the entire layout of the space used in the ritual of the performance and the audience in living and even interacting at the Benjang mask show. The higher their understanding of the concept of taste, the stronger the sensibility in responding to attractive mask shows. Similarly, the aesthetic quality of the mask dance performance is also complementary in a ritual performance supported by the concept of taste. The success of the implementation of taste in this show provides aesthetic stimuli for the audience to achieve catharsis for them with the involvement of a sense that gives meaning in life and becomes a person who is always inferior.

Abstract

Environmental conservation and sustainable living were a movement that directed people to return to using eco-friendly materials, especially in creating textile products. One solution to the problem is to reduce textile waste made from synthetic materials by creating organic inks that can be an alternative ink in the textile printing process. This study used a qualitative approach and experimental methods through the exploratory phase of the extract solution of several natural dyes added with the thickener alginate, guar gum, and tapioca flour. The organic ink has been applied to textiles made from 100% cotton using a screen printing technique with a post-mordanting fixation process. This experiment aimed to determine the optimal results of the dye paste solution (organic ink) on absorption, fabric color, fading test, visual and texture results. The experimental results prove that color printing using eco-friendly materials with screen printing techniques can be applied to textiles. Each extract solution, thickening agent, and mordant substance on the fixation process have different absorption with the result that has been made varying colors and visual results on the textile surface.

Abstract

Abstract. The current study focuses on representation about visual artwork regarding its value of paradoxes and harmony. We use material object which is strongly contradictive as usual to get a unique aesthetic value through compotition, harmony, and color in paiting. The present study also uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze the value of human internal organs as a big topic of painting. Result shows that representational mimesis is closely related to the paradoxical context that is arranged in harmony between one field and another with consideration of aesthetic values. Also, succesfull work in this study is strongly linked with ideas (human’s organ) and visual (painting) which creates a perception of beauty regarding human’s organ as an inspiration of artworks.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic resulted many changes and adjustments in various sectors of life, including the creative fashion industry sector. One of the topics that came out was the concept of sustainable fashion as a solution to overcome the challenges of changing times. One of the ideas for implementing the concept is “reduce-reuse-recycle”. The topic of this research is the application of the reduce-reuse-recycle concept in the design of co-ed androgynous unisex fashion using clothing waste, unsold clothing stock, and leftover fabric scraps. The topic of unisex clothing is a global fashion trend phenomenon that represents the efficiency of product differentiation as well as a gender identity campaign through appearance. The research problem is to find a suitable concept of design development for a unisex fashion product with co-ed androgynous style based on sustainable. The purpose of the research is to determine the concept and process of designing a unisex fashion product with a co-ed androgynous style based on a sustainable concept. The research method uses descriptive qualitative methods through triangulation (combined) data collection techniques covering several ways, namely literature, observation, interviews, and experimental. The design method uses the DUCMOT fashion system design stage with the design process in research and experimental testing. This concept not only has a positive impact on the surrounding environment but can also hone the creativity of industry players in utilizing and extending the life cycle of a product into new, innovative products. Abstract

To be successful in today’s competitive market, businesses must have a clear product recognition among their users. Consumers frequently have a wide range of products to choose from, making it difficult for a company’s products to be discovered and remembered. An important factor is product recognition and how we perceive it through our perception, which is primarily an identification process that is based on familiarity, resemblance, or similarity. Product gist is a technique used by product designers to visually evaluate product forms during the design process. The study employs an exploratory qualitative approach with multiple case studies in three design projects. The findings confirm that the gist method can assist product designers in creating strong product recognition. The gist method assists designers in identifying key representations that can be kept, modified, or eliminated in order to create new product recognition through typological innovation. Abstract

Using fine art practice as a tool of Indonesia’s soft power diplomacy in Suriname is one of the critical instruments in the practice of bilateral relations between the two countries. This can be seen when soft power diplomacy is defined as a means of diplomacy that contains elements of culture, value systems, or policies. Such effort, of course, has a positive impact on international relations between the two countries for cooperation in the economic, socio-cultural, and even trade between nations. Soft power diplomacy can be interpreted as an effort to organise diplomacy to attract attention to the international world and create a cooperative relationship to attract public attention through efforts by using various channels, one of which is cultural media. In this study, the author uses qualitative research methods using an explanatory “Case Study” theoretical approach. Thus, the results achieved in this study are how the state can see that art, which is part of the culture in Indonesia, can be a medium to bridge bilateral relations between the two countries, Indonesia and Suriname. Abstract

A mascot is a visual representative for a product, organization, and even social movements, and is made with the aim of carrying a certain message from the form it displays. The design of the mascot for the ‘Nasi Gratis Yogyakarta’ social movement is intended so that people, especially potential donors, are familiar with this program and are motivated to actively support the program. This research used qualitative method as data collecting method and design research. The design process started with data collection, determining the mascot concept, sketching, finishing, and revision. The design of the mascot ‘Si Naryo’ is expected to be an effective medium to introduce social programs and become an identity representative for the ‘Nasi Gratis Yogyakarta’. The results shows that the ‘Si Naryo’ mascot is quite effective because it is frequently used in every local event as the identity of the program, and started to get attention from the community. The existence of a mascot can give identity to a social activity, both as an identification that reflects the concept of the activity, as well as for commercial purposes.
