Abstract

Since the first invention of the light bulb, humans have increasingly been accustomed to living under excessive artificial light every night. Inappropriate use of artificial light causes light pollution that now affects more than 80% world’s population in densely populated cities, including Bandung City residents. The latest research shows that the rate of light pollution for a high category in Bandung City has experienced an increase of 13,79 km2/year during 2013-2017. This has resulted in the loss of Bandung night sky aesthetic because the lights coming from the ground form a skyglow dome in the atmosphere, blocking most of the astronomical object's light and rendering them invisible from earth. As a person who has always been interested in astronomy and is also a Bandung resident, I have concern over the long-lost Bandung night sky natural beauty due to light pollution caused by human activities. I desire to raise awareness of this issue through an installation art which explores lights, reflective paint, and video as the mediums.

Abstract

For all his life Johannes Kepler seeking for harmony. Kepler is best known for his laws of planetary movement. He is also a polymath working in the intersection between contemporary sciences such as astronomy, math, physics, optics, astrology, music theory, meteorology dan history. After spending years exploring those different disciplines, he later learned he was actually longing for the harmony. His fascination over harmony in nature kept growing up, in his last days Kepler was still trying to finish a book he started since he was still a scholar. This book is called Somnium. Somnium itself is the Latin word for 'dream,' a word that make sense if you read the whole chapter. The main idea for this project is Kepler’s fascination over the harmony in celestial object, thus he tried to convince people that Copernicus heliocentrism is the absolute truest way to understand how our solar system works. The idea of making narative came up to Kepler’s mind as he turned his research into a fiction, a story about a boy who makes his journey to the moon to help his mother for being accused of being a witch. Similiarly to the boy, Kepler’s mother is also accused for witchcraft. So Somnium was not really just a scientific book but in some part of them, there is also some biographical facts and fiction. By knowing the pattern in nature we can understand that the nature is in order and there is a grand design hidden in layers. Just like Kepler that are fascinated by the order of nature, 'Somnium' in this work is also talks about the pattern and harmony the curiousity for nature that represented in geometrical objet and natural study, and also about the old knowledge where science, art and spirituality is learnt through one form knowledge

Abstract

Virtual photoshoot is a new method in the development era of modern contemporary photography that was born due to the impact of COVID-19. This study finally tries to analyze the trend of virtual photoshoots as the use of photography technology during the Covid-19 pandemic. Virtual photoshoot is a development of photography. The method used in this research is a phenomenological approach regarding the use of online video call software in the process of shooting the object. The sample of this research is the photographic works of virtual photoshoot by Michael Fabians Cools when taking pictures using the sophisticated video call application. The results showed three main results, namely media, technical and aesthetic. In terms of media, research has found that the existence of social media such as Instagram can support the existence of a virtual photoshoot trend. Technically research, this virtual photoshoot implementation method is something new and has never happened before. The virtual photoshoot implementation method is applied in in-game screenshots and Google Street View, where virtual photoshoots offer a shooting process by taking pictures through an LCD monitor using video call software such as Zoom, Facetime, and Google Meet to bring up photo objects. Aesthetically, this study found that the results of photos from virtual photoshoots led to photography techniques that were not widely used before in conventional shooting, namely displaying the blur effect on photos using glasses or bottles. The blur effect that is usually produced through lens settings can also be produced with a glass or bottle.

Abstract

This article explores the creation of craft techniques through the process using coconut fiber composites as a medium for arts and crafts. The study highlights the outer casting composite technique, coconut fiber processing techniques using hand skills which are the result of practical exploration by the author’s to create three-dimensional objects made from coconut fiber composites, hopefully this technique can be applied and developed further as an innovation for arts and crafts techniques using the cocopeat as medium. This technique combines the putty technique which is generally used in wood medium with the basic paper fingers pressing technique in papier mache, and then the technique applied to the coconut fiber composite. The research uses qualitative methods and practice led research, the author’s completed the research with the documents and data on creative activity processes such as exploration of the medium, techniques, theories and contextualization. The outer casting composite technique will cover several stages, starting from material preparation, making the composite dough, sticking the dough to the casting, putty and sanding, and finally coating or finishing the composite materials. The outcome of this research is the innovation of craft techniques using coconut fiber composite material which is applied for the making of a lampshade with the presenting data in the form of a documentation process.

Abstract

Interior design is a process of conditioning a specific atmosphere, which relates to the concept of 'staging space.' As interior design is inherently designed to create an illusory world, the 'illusive, simulative' space can be used interchangeably with the real-imagined space of interior design and cinema. This article will examine three horror films to focus on how interior mise-en-scene is used to create a horror atmosphere. The films A Mother's Love, Tatami, and POB embodied semantic meanings into their spatial settings, serving as a projection of the characters; psyche, and story plots. A rhetorical visual method is used to interpret the relationship between spatial language, camera angle, character, and story plot. The research discovers that spatial language is an instrument of terror, as repeated patterns of liminal space, backlighting lights, and dream scene metaphors enhance the properties and camera angles to elicit an emotion of horror.

Abstract

Mural, in the form of public art, has the power to raise social issues by transforming public spaces into spaces of dialogue. Meanwhile, participation in contemporary art and design is an approach that actively involves the community in realizing a joint project. This paper discusses a community service project using participatory mural media to raise awareness about inclusive education issues for the future of children with special needs, particularly those with Down syndrome. Together with the community of parents and children with Down syndrome—POTADS PIK West Java—the community service team aims to foster a spirit of inclusivity through the role of parents and the creative expression of POTADS students, who are children with Down syndrome. Parents and community mentors of POTADS are given the opportunity to share their experiences and struggles regarding inclusive education. These stories and narratives are then transformed into visuals representing those experiences as visual symbols. The project process is also documented in the form of a short documentary to capture the creative journey and interactions between the service team and the POTADS community. Utilizing social media platforms, this short documentary aims to reach a wider audience, promote social inclusion, and showcase the creativity of individuals with Down syndrome. This project also highlights the role of art and participatory methods in community engagement, emphasizing the importance of community and contemporary art in supporting inclusive education. Mural, sebagai salah satu bentuk seni publik memiliki kemampuan untuk mengangkat isu sosial dengan mengubah ruang publik menjadi ruang ‘dialog’.
