FOSTERING COLLEGE STUDENT'S CRITICAL READING SKILL THROUGH PADLET APPLICATION Vina Nurviyani

AbstractCritical reading is an essential skill for college students success in academic and social engagement. Many students have troubles in reading the required books or references in some courses. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of padlet application as an instructional media in fostering college students critical reading skill in higher education. Moreover, the strengths and the weaknesses of the padlet application in teaching critical reading were explored. This study applied action research was conducted in two cycles and involved twenty five college students. It was carried out at a private university in West Java. Moreover, three data collection techniques were applied in this study including reading tests, classroom observations, and questionnaire. The finding shows that by implementing padlet application in fostering college students critical reading skill covering questioning, discussing, interpreting, summarizing and synthesizing, in the first cycle, most college students critical reading skill achieved much improvement obviously. Sixty percents of all students reached the learning outcomes in critical reaading. Furthermore, in the second one, after carrying out a deep analysis and remedial teaching, eighty percents of them reached the learning outcome in critical reaading. It means that almost all college students critical reading skill increased significantly. Thus, the implementation of padlet application in fostering students critical reading skill is effective with the result showing significant difference, compared with that of the first cycle.Keywords: action research, critical reading, padlet application.

AbstrackThis research aims to self-actualization of depictions of the main characters of the Novel Hujan work of Tere Liye and structure of which is contained in the novel. This research is qualitative research using the method of content analysis. The approach used ini this study is the structural approach and psychology Abraham Maslow. In this study, there are four ways of engineering data collection performed by the researchers, namely: (a) read and understand the contents of the novelâ€™s story in depth. (b) the identification of each of the novelâ€™s structure, namely: tokoh, characters, setting, and theme. (c) conduct a classification with classified the quotations form phrases, clauses, sentences, or paragraphs containing the existence of self-actualization character and basic necessities to achieve self-actualization. (d) hold a study library to get secondary data as supplementary data about self-actulization of the main character. In qualitative researches apply as key research instruments. The results of this study indicate that there are six basic needs based on Maslowâ€™s hierarchy. Six basic needs are contained in the main character of the novel Hujan by Tere Liye. The main character can actualize himself although only a few basic needs that have been fulfilled in the character, meaning that six basic needs are not all owened by characters. Although they only meet some of the needs of the six basic needs, they can actualize themselves.Keywords: self-actualization, the Novel, the main charcter, and the psychology of Abraham Maslow

AbstractThis study was aimed to study and explain women's existence and Sibel Eraslan's Hajar novel structure based on feminism literature. This is a qualitative research using content analysis method. The findings in this study include; (1) the building element structure contained in Hajar covering theme, characterization, plot, and background; (2) women's images in Hajar which includes both physical and non-physical images; (3) women's roles in Hajar which correspondents domestic and public roles. The existence theory used to study Hajar was Kiekegaard's existence theory which defines images and roles. The theory was used to analyze the efforts undertaken by women against oppression. The results of this study are expected to be useful in the process of learning language and literature, especially in feminism studies, as to improve learners and readers ability in understanding literary works.Keywords: women, existence, feminism, novel.

ABSTRACTIn comuniction and social interaction process appear a speaker to use language variation, like: code switching and code mixing. This research only focused in code mixing. Code-mixing was mixing foreign language elements in to the structure of main language. The purpose of this research was to describe the form, background and function of the use of code-mixing in the opinion writing of Media Indonesia News paper. This study used qualitative research. Based on the data analysis, obtainsed descriptions of the use of code mixing form of phrases, words, baster and clauses, description of the background of code- mixing that used outer code- mixing ie. ie using English. The description of the use of code- mixing which serves to identify the role, identification of diversity, and the desire to explain and interpret.Keyword : code mixing, writing opinion, news paper.

ABSTRACTThis research aimed to gain a deep understanding of comparative characterizations, household status, occupation or profession, and socio-cultural background of the third figure women widowed in a collection of short stories (short story), a literary review cross reference. This research seeks to understand the phenomenon of characterizations of women widowed in three short stories that are then compared between the three. Approach this research in the form of a qualitative approach and methods used are content analysis methods. The process of data analysis in this research is not based on an effort to test the hypothesis, but rather attempted to develop a theory or framework of thinking based on the theory of literary sociology, so researchers retain a major role as a tool research. Data sources the study consists of three short stories namely (1) â€œNamanya, Massaâ€, by Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim, a short story from Indonesia, (2) â€œTarian Hamil dan Penyair Bulanâ€ by Johari Tarif, short stories from Malaysia, (3) and "Norhayati" by Amil Jaya, a short story from Brunei Darussalam. The topic of this research inspired the character equality is in the short story from the collection of short stories in the book Menjenguk Dunia Batin Cerpen Serumpun (MDBCM). The findings of this research in the form of naming differences, education, household status, employment, and socio-cultural background. For the differences of the characters, properties, and the habit of the third figure women widowed: Massa, Lely, and Norhayati is caused by the difference in the level of education, occupation or profession, and socio-cultural environment.Keyword: characterizations, women's widow, short stories, literary cross reference

AbstractThis research seeks to depict the history of Indonesian theater development from 1985 to 1995. This period is deliberately chosen because at that time it is seen that New Order power reached the top of its consolidation. Is there correlation between theater as a part of the reflection of society's expression and the repressive-authoritarian situation of the New Order government? With the approach of sociology of art, during that period, theater in Indonesia reflectedthe changes in society socially and in terms of values. One of these changes was the collapse of the conception of human wholeness (in terms of flesh and blood) in theater in Indonesia, because humans weremerely the object of the state power that tended to be authoritarian.Keywords: Indonesian theater 1985-1995, social changes and values, silent theater, theater ideas.

Abstract Objective of this study is to gain understanding about types of implicature and violation of cooperative Maxim in Rajaa Al Sane's novel The Girl of Riyadh. The study took place between August, 2016 and March, 2017. The study was a qualitative study with content analysis method, which involved data collection, data processing, data analysis and data display. The focus of this study was analyzing two types of implicatures used in utterances in the novel, namely conventional and non-conventional implicature as well as violations of Grice's Cooperative Principles resulting in implicature, namely Maxim of quantity, Maxim of relevance, Maxim of manner, Maxim of relevance-quality, Maxim of quantity-quality and Maxim of quantity-manner. The findings of this study have theoretical contributions to Arabic learning theories in university, in general and provide examples of foreign language implicatures, in particular. Abstract This research aims to present the forms of greetings in Gorontalo Language and the examples used in society. The study focused on the use of Gorontalo language and took place in Ayula Tilango Kecamatan Bulango Selatan. The data were obtained through observation and elicitation. The results indicated various greetings based on Based on the findings, in Bahasa Gorontalo, there are, namely: Name in the form of kinship relationship (family connection â€“ Vertically), name in the form of horizontal relationship (intimacy, friendship and body shape), name has a collective identifying character of the clan / fam (surname), name with religious title, name contains a custom title or an honors degree (given for personal achievements, a hero or died important person, important status in local government), and name contains a noble title. AbstractThe purpose of this research is to comprehend the language comprehensively in the novel "Key Eyeâ€ by HELLA S. HAASSE. This research uses qualitative research with content analysis method. Data were collected through speeches of characters in novels, observations, and recordings. Analysis and interpretation of data shows that politeness in the speech of the character in the novel â€œKey eye by HELLA S. HAASSE" divided into positive politeness and negative politeness, as well as the maxim according to Geoffrey Leech. These findings can be a recommendation for students to understand the comprehensive politeness by reading the novel "The Key Eye by HELLA S. HAASSEâ€ as an alternative source of learning on politeness. This research is also recommended to the next researcher to use this research as a reference in his research.Key words: Politeness, Maxim, Novel, Content analysis.

Abstract Many factors make quality education or not. These factors include the professionalism of educators, educational inputs both in the form of student input and facilities (infrastructure input), learning process, environment and others. This paper attempts to confirm the process of improving students' speaking skills on English subjects through cooperative learning of Jigsaw models on students in X Class of MIA SMA Negeri 2 DKI Jakarta. The subjects were 108 students studying speaking English The subjects then were randomly assigned into experimental group and control group The experiment lasted for nine weeks started with pre-test in the beginning and ended with a post - test in the last meeting. During the treatment, the teacher applied planning, drafting, revising and editing stages in learning. The result shows Learning outcomes in students, especially speaking skills in students in SMA Negeri 2 DKI Jakarta has increased. This is evident through the experiments on cycles I and II both for class 10 Mipa 1, from the mean of 70.9167 to 84.2778. class 10 Mipa 2, from the average 71.8056 to 86.2222 and for class 10 Mipa 3 from the average 70.5833 to the average 84.2222 so that the total increase during applying the Jigsaw type cooperative learning model from the initial value.
