Abstract

Teaching and learning are a never-ending process—a continuum. So, change is inevitable. Our practices, perspectives and assessment procedures must be changed in accordance with the changing law of nature. What was considered best yesterday may not remain best today. It is educators who need to keep themselves abreast of new methodologies, trends and discoveries to cater to the changing needs of students. This study attempts to illustrate how innovative and effective Process of Perfection (POP) method of teaching is and how this method can be adapted in our EFL classrooms to maximise the learning outcomes of students whose English language competence may or may not be high and classrooms may or may not be well-equipped with ICT tools and adequate number of teaching resources. 6 English language teachers and 40 students from the only private school that implemented POP method of Global Classroom curriculum were selected to survey the effectiveness and adaptability in the teaching of the English language. The researcher employed mixed-methods research to undertake the study where two different sets of questionnaires for both the teachers and the students were used to collect data. The findings demonstrated that advantages outnumbered disadvantages in a country like Nepal. Teachers want to use this teaching method because after having been acquainted with this method of teaching, they no longer have difficulty designing hands-on activities. Each textbook contains recommended activities that are designed according to the lesson. And this teaching method basically facilitates three types of learners: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. The students also feel happy as this method is a joyful and effective learning process. However, they sometimes have difficulties grasping the concept of some English grammar lessons that are of higher level.

Abstract

Over the last decades, applied linguistics and language teaching/learning have investigated language errors committed by learners for both diagnostic and prognostic purposes. Initially, error analysis was conducted manually and involved a limited number of corpus. However, computer software advancement has facilitated much larger amounts of data analysis. This study aimed at analyzing the errors identified in undergraduate thesis abstracts written by 28 students of an English Education study program in Jakarta. Data were analyzed using UAM Corpus Tool. The results show that, successively, the types of errors most frequently committed in the corpus are: (1) grammatical errors; (2) phrasing errors; and (3) punctuation errors; while the rarest errors are pragmatic errors and lexical errors. These findings indicate that the students need to improve their mastery of grammatical rules, ability to prevent their first language interference, and skills to use correct punctuation to empower them to write more effective thesis abstracts.

Abstract

In this explanatory sequential mixed method study, the researcher attempted to investigate the EFL teachers’ status of CK, PK, PCK, classroom practice and the relationships among these variables. Comprehensive and purposive sampling techniques were used. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses methods were employed in the study. The least knowledge the teachers owned was CK whereas classroom practice was found to be relatively the highest. They had moderate PK in assessing students’ understanding of topics, in drawing up clear classroom rules, creating a friendly atmosphere, and developing a good relationship with students. However, the overall finding revealed that the teachers were not well equipped with PK. They had moderate PCK in designing instructional objectives and context, and in using appropriate examples to explain concepts related to the subject matter whereas their knowledge of students’ understandings and misunderstandings was inadequate. They had low knowledge to diagnose the notions that were problematic for students and to think why these concepts became difficult. There was a strong positive correlation between CK and classroom practice. The correlation between CK and PK was fair whereas there was a weak positive correlation between PK and classroom practice. There was not statistically significant relationship between PCK and classroom practice.

Abstract

The paper deals with EFL peer learning at a non-linguistic university. Lack of understanding of the mechanism of interactive learning as a system of relationships and interactions hinders creating the conditions for effective education. The aim of the study is to investigate theoretical and practical data on interactive learning, to design and describe the methodology for EFL peer learning in the form of educational models. The material includes basic postulates of constructivism, ecolinguistics, practice-oriented learning, peer learning and tutoring. Methods of modeling, experiment, observation and analysis are used. As a result, the structural components of interactive learning, their interconnections have been established and analyzed, the principles of interactive peer learning were formulated, including student activity; educational material selected in compliance with student’s knowledge; cyclical stages of a learning process; teacher’s preparatory work; classroom peer tutoring. Based on these principles, five models of peer learning have been designed each of which is centered around active interactions of students swapping the roles “tutor” - “tutee”. They are “Pair work”, “Group work”, “Peer assessment”, “Blended interactions”, “Extracurricular activities”. These models ensure maximum student involvement in EFL learning process, help increase motivation and level of language proficiency, develop students’ communication skills.

Abstract

With the expanding realm of online education in Indonesia, determining factors influencing university students' participation in distinct modes of virtual learning is crucial to developing more effective digital pedagogy. This research aims to scrutinize factors affecting Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) university students' low participation in synchronous and asynchronous online learning classes. This research was framed quantitatively by employing a five-rating Likert-scale survey. This survey aimed to illuminate the underlying factors that shape students' behaviors or perceptions within these online learning modes. The findings showed that factors affecting the Indonesian tertiary EFL students' low participation in synchronous virtual learning mode include technical problems, learning anxiety, social isolation, socioeconomic status, and pet and human interferences. Meanwhile, heavy workloads, tedious content, and deprivation of human contact were associated with the factors affecting the EFL students' low participation in asynchronous learning modes.

Abstract

Pronunciation is an area of language, which is easy to recognize and see. When a language learner makes an error in pronunciation, other people can identify the error easily. Mispronunciations are common errors that happen to English language learners in the Expanding Circle, in which English is a foreign language, like Indonesia. This paper deals with mispronunciations made by Indonesian language learners. The respondents were 14 students of a writing class in an English Language Education Program at a private university in Indonesia. They took the course during the pandemic era. The classes were therefore done online, and each virtual class was recorded. These students were video-recorded when reading certain parts of texts in the course. The findings showed that the 14 students made some mispronunciations due to several reasons like habits of pronouncing words in Indonesian and a lack of knowledge of the ideal notion of native speakers' pronunciation. It is hoped that this paper can be useful for EFL teachers teaching pronunciation as well as for students who are still struggling with their pronunciation in their efforts to gain native-like proficiency.

Abstract

AI-generated paraphrasing tools, especially QuillBot and Paraphrasing Tool, play a crucial role in preventing plagiarism in academic writing. However, their effectiveness and proficiency have been questioned, particularly regarding the adequacy of their strategies. This qualitative study analyzed the paraphrasing strategies and proficiency levels of QuillBot and Paraphrase Tool. Using a purposive sampling technique, all 30 abstracts from one issue of the Journal of Second Language Writing were paraphrased using the two paraphrasing tools in their standard modes, and the results were analyzed using the frameworks of Keck (2014) and Nabhan et al. (2021). The results of the study indicated that both tools primarily used synonym substitution, with QuillBot favoring word-level changes and Paraphrase Tool emphasizing sentence restructuring. QuillBot tended to show minimal revision, followed by moderate revision, while Paraphrase Tool exhibited more moderate revision, followed by minimal and substantial revision. Paraphrase Tool exhibited broader paraphrasing capability than QuillBot, but both tools show some paraphrasing limitations. Overall, while these tools may enhance some writing, writers should thoroughly review the core concepts of the original texts and grammatical structures in specific contexts. For novice writers, paraphrasing practice in classrooms should be conducted under teachers’ guidance. AI-generated tools should be secondary.
