Abstract

Title: The Persistence of the Value System of Dalihan Na Tolu within Residential Spaces of the Overseas Batak Communities in Yogyakarta   The research begins with a community entity moving from old to new residential space. This study focuses on the overseas Batak community who migrated with the urge to achieve hagabeon, hamoraon, and hasangapon. Yogyakarta has become one of the destinations for the migration of the overseas Batak community. The study aims to discover how the Dalihan Na Tolu value system is reflected in the architectural patterns of the Batak community's homes in Yogyakarta. The data sources included physical evidence found in residential homes, reconstructed spatial arrangements based on observations and interviews with individuals who have been displaced from their homeland (specifically Tapanuli, North Sumatra), as well as notes and writings about the history, social, and cultural conditions of the Batak community in Yogyakarta. The gamma map technique was used to analyze the spatial depth level and position of the three functional groups in Dalihan Na Tolu. The principle of Dalihan Na Tolu persists through spatial adaptation, placing hula-hula positions in areas with high connectivity and away from circulation pathways. The persistence of the Dalihan Na Tolu value system is an attitude of respect for hula-hula.

Abstract

Title: The Design of Buildings and Restaurant Facilities that are Family Friendly and Relevant to the Urban Culture of Denpasar   The urban community's demand to bring families to visit restaurants is significantly high. The on-site phenomenon indicates that the building designs of several restaurants in Denpasar have not maximally met the needs of the urban community, especially for families. Therefore, research is required to analyze restaurants' facilities and building designs to align with the needs of families and urban culture in Denpasar. The method employed is a qualitative descriptive method. The research results showcase the case study objects of several favorite restaurants in Denpasar, indicating that some already meet the needs of the urban community but need to be adjusted to align with current needs. The findings show that some restaurants are not in line with urban culture due to insufficient attention to the needs of the urban community. Issues related to spatial completeness and arrangement, availability of specific facilities, furniture design, and cleanliness of facilities contribute to this mismatch. The solution is to consider standard design, space, and security to meet needs, provide specific facilities, and implement the concept of green design. The contribution provided is in the form of input to ensure that restaurants are designed to adapt to the evolving needs of the urban community.

Abstract

Title: Directing the Image of Malang City as a Colonial City using the Serial Vision Method Malang City has the potential for buildings representing it as a colonial city. Thomas Karsten was appointed as the planner and designer of Malang City. Urban planning and design results can be felt in the Bouwplan phase from 1917 to 1935. In contrast, Malang City already has elements of images of the city that form an urban image. The research aims to see whether the image of Malang City as a colonial city in the past is still visible today. The research seeks to rediscover traces of the colonial city through serial vision techniques with a synchronic view of the present. The method applied in the research is descriptive qualitative with synchronic data analysis. The data collection technique uses the serial vision method. The research was conducted in 2022 before the current traffic lane changes. From today's perspective, the traces of the colonial city are still quite strong, and the presence of the urban component is still visible through continuous vision. The results of serial vision observations show the elements that form the city's image. Even though the city image theory was put forward by Kevin Lynch in 1960, based on serial vision method tracking data obtained from observations in 2023, Thomas Kasten seems to have been able to think about this for a long time so that the results of his design formed the image of a colonial city.

Abstract

Title: The Resilience of Buildings with Adaptability to the Environment (Case Study: Tomb of Syekh Mudzakir in Bedono, Sayung, Demak)   Coastal areas have the potential to be affected by abrasion and tidal floods. Syekh Mudzakir's grave is in Tambaksari Subvillage, Bedono Village, Sayung Subdistrict, Demak District, and in the coastal area of the North Coast (Pantura) of Java Island. However, the existence of the tomb and its buildings to this day still survives amidst the marine environment that surrounds it. This tomb has become a religious tourism destination in Demak Regency, with the number of tourists increasing. This research aims to determine and explore the resilience of tomb buildings that are adaptive to abrasion and tidal flood environments. This research is field research. Research data uses primary data and secondary data through the results of observations, interviews, and documentation. The research analysis uses qualitative descriptive analysis. This research shows that Syekh Mudzakir's tomb does not float in the middle of the sea. However, the tomb survives adaptively to the environment by adapting the area, building development, building structural systems, and expanding the site to be robust against abrasion and tidal floods. This research concludes that the family and community survive the grave by adapting to the environment and mitigating disasters that befall the grave area.

Abstract

Title: Study of Toba and Toraja Batak Architectural Forms as a Result of Collective Austronesian Memory The archipelago (Indonesia) that we live in today is the distribution of the Austronesian people who lived in riverine areas in South China and North Vietnam in the mid-4th BC. Cultural development in an area results from a mixture of internal and external things. The mixing of culture and art by early settlers and new settlers resulted in diverse architectural forms, even though they share the same principles of traditional values (Austronesian collective memory). Toba and Toraja Batak architecture is hollow architecture with a similar roof shape that resembles the shape of a boat, a typology of houses and barns facing each other, and a housing complex oriented to form a particular axis. This research used an exploratory-qualitative approach, using literature sources combined with direct observations in the field. This research aims to find the level of closeness between Toba and Toraja Batak architecture based on the collective memory of the Austronesian people.

Abstract

Title: Analysis of The Problems in the Form of Roof Truss Construction in Indonesia The Nusantara archipelago has various architectural forms, such as traditional houses with various roof shapes. These roof shapes consist of various forms of roof support frame construction. Problems arose when the Dutch came and brought the concept of truss construction. This concept was massively applied throughout the Nusantara archipelago, even making the architectural construction learning system in Indonesia use methods developed by the Dutch, making it hard to align with construction in the archipelago. This study uses a qualitative method with data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The analysis was carried out by identifying and comparing traditional houses' roof frame construction supports and their roof slabs with houses with horse-horse construction from the Netherlands to gain knowledge of the problems in the roof construction of both. The findings of this study are that the roof shape and support construction are one package as an interaction between the shape and support construction. These diverse forms also give birth to various roof support frame construction forms. However, the influence of the Dutch horse-horse construction has made experts more inclined to use the Dutch hanging horse concept rather than developing roof support frame construction that has been proven to be integrated with the roof shape. Nowadays, the hanging truss concept has many applications in the construction of traditional houses, which is considered less suitable.

Abstract

Title: Implementation’s Analysis of Tropical Architectural Design Concepts at Alila Seminyak Hotel, Bali   Tropical architecture is born from efforts to adjust to the climate in the tropics. Tropical architectural design always shows the form of adaptation of buildings to the environment. Traditional Balinese houses that function as community residential units are one of the tropical architectural typologies with the main advantage of thermal comfort, especially on air circulation flow that flows well throughout the building. However, when reviewing further commercial buildings in Bali, especially star hotels, the implementation of tropical architecture is a theme that requires deep design thinking. Adjustment to Balinese regional regulations on buildings is very binding; limited sites and demands for comfort and suitability of building functions are challenging for architects to design an accommodation building with a tropical architectural concept. Alila Seminyak Hotel is one of the five-star hotels outside the ITDC Nusa Dua area, which tries to form a tropical architectural identity as the main attraction. This qualitative descriptive research takes the case study of Alila Seminyak Hotel. Assessment analysis was carried out on the physical form of the hotel building, which was then appropriated and compared with tropical architectural theory. The results of this study show that the implementation of tropical architecture in the Alila Seminyak hotel building can be classified into several main elements, namely, first is the form of laying the building period on-site, second is the orientation pattern of the building, and third is The physical design of the building emphasizes, that this building have three main concept designs, it is namely insulation, shading, and cross ventilation.

Abstract

Title: Physical Environmental Quality of Residential Areas on the Railway Boundary Labuhan Ratu Sub-district, Bandar Lampung   The high demand for land and limited availability have caused built-up land to move to suburban areas of the city. The concentration of activities, such as establishing settlements and higher education centers, has also influenced the development of built-up land around them. Low-income people take advantage of the opportunities available by utilizing vacant land as a place to live. Land use that is carried out continuously and uncontrollably has an impact on the railway boundary. This study aims to identify the physical condition of the environment in residential areas in Labuhan Ratu Subdistrict, especially in the railroad border area. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The results found that the existence of settlements on the railroad border in Labuhan Ratu Subdistrict is included in the category of illegal settlements. Infrastructure conditions such as drainage, lighting, waste management, clean water, and others could be better; the topographic conditions of the area also support this. Increasingly dense illegal settlements and poor infrastructure conditions will affect environmental conditions, such as decreased land balance and environmental quality.

Abstract

Title: Sense of Smell Experience on Osing Traditional House Architecture Nusantara architecture results from identical thinking on cultural background and natural conditions that produce physical comfort and atmosphere resulting from the response of human senses, one of which is the sense of smell. The study focuses on the influences or sense of smell responses associated with buildings, such as building materials used, softscape, and hardscape that produce certain scents, especially in Osing Tribe's Indigenous Houses. In line with that, the study identified smells through sensory mapping and the smell intensity influencing the atmosphere by superimposing a Likert scale with a smells wheel from two objects studied, Homestay Bata Merah and Villa SoLong in Banyuwangi. The results of this study found that building elements such as wood, terraces, natural stones, ceramics, paving blocks, and linen are the primary materials that give characteristic aroma, followed by vegetation such as trees that have flowers or sweet-aromatic fruit also dominate, especially in the Homestay Bata Merah. On the other hand, the typical smells are also formed by the influence of geographical conditions and wind movements as the medium of smells material spread, as in Vila SoLong, which has typical ocean smells. The sense of smell experience of traditional house buildings also shapes Nusantara Architecture's identity and improves the comfort of visitors or people active in it.

Abstract

Title: Comparison of Tectonics Forming Space Module Systems in Madurese and West Sumba Vernacular Houses Taneyan Lanjhang is a type of residential pattern in Madura, inhabited by one large family and consisting of several mass structures and a courtyard in the middle, one of which is the Roma Bangsal building intended as a residence for women.  Due to limited land, the designed module system must meet internal users’ needs and capacity. This research aims to compare and discover what factors influence the formation of spatial module systems from the tectonics through anthropometric dimensions in the form of residents' daily activities and social activities in Roma Bangsal, Bangsal gabung. As a comparison, Uma Mbatangu houses are used in Ratenggaro village, West Sumba.  The analysis method was carried out descriptively and qualitatively. Data collection uses a literature study method that visualizes plans, sections, and details. Roma Bangsal and Uma Mbatangu have unique architectural elements, especially the form and connection system. The similarity between the three in virtual aspects such as social strata (gender), light, empty, openness, and physical aspects, including materials, daily activities, scale, and proportion influencing how the connection to the module system creates the external appearance of the building, structure and indoor plan to create matters of integration.
