Abstract

Household organic waste management in rural areas remains predominantly reliant on the conventional collect, transport, and dispose system, which contributes to the increasing volume of waste in landfills and exacerbates environmental pollution. The low level of circular economy implementation highlights the need for community-based innovations. The community service activity was conducted in Situmeang Hasundutan Village, Pintu Bosi, using a participatory approach. The methods comprised dissemination of circular economy principles, training in eco-enzyme production at a 1:3:10 ratio (sugar, organic waste, and water), practical sessions, and guided monitoring of the fermentation process. Evaluation was conducted through observation and participant feedback. The results indicate enhanced community knowledge and practical skills in the independent processing of organic waste. Participants were able to produce eco-enzymes with a successful initial fermentation process and recognized their potential use as liquid fertilizer and natural cleaning products. The program effectively reduced organic waste volume and generated opportunities for eco-friendly product-based enterprises, contributing to environmental sustainability and the development of the village's creative economy.

Abstract

Anxiety is one of the psychological problems commonly experienced by the elderly due to physical changes, limitations in activities, and feelings of loss of social role. Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays an important role in guiding the elderly to gain inner peace through spiritual approaches and worship practices. One simple method that has a spiritual as well as psychological dimension is ablution. In Islam, ablution not only functions as a valid condition for prayer, but also as a means of purification of the mind and body. The activity of washing the limbs with water that is done with full awareness is believed to be able to provide a relaxation effect, reduce anxiety, and increase peace of mind. This community service activity was carried out in the elderly community of Karangrejo, Surabaya, with the aim of increasing the elderly's understanding of the spiritual meaning of ablution while practicing it as a simple form of therapy to reduce anxiety. The implementation method includes counseling, ablution practice demonstrations, and spiritual experience reflection sessions. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge about the meaning of ablution, an increase in the practice of ablution with solemnity, and positive testimonials from participants regarding the reduction of feelings of anxiety after performing ablution routinely. This program proves that PAI based on worship practices can be a simple and effective strategy to improve the mental health of the elderly.

Abstract

The issue of homeless individuals and beggars (gepeng) is a complex social phenomenon reflecting structural poverty and social inequality. This study focused on individuals categorized as People with Social Welfare Problems (PPKS) at the Binjai City Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) for Social Services for the Homeless and Beggars. The research employed the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with key informants—specifically the PPKS and social workers at the facility—and a review of relevant documents. The study aimed to examine the implementation of efforts to address the issue of homelessness and begging by the Guidance and Counseling (BK) Study Program at STKIP Budidaya, as well as the impact of these activities. The findings indicate that the community empowerment activities—designed to boost life motivation and foster a better quality of life—were effective. This effectiveness was evidenced by the participation and enthusiasm shown by the PPKS throughout the activities

Abstract

Rumah Limas is a traditional house of South Sumatra that contains cultural, social, and philosophical values as a local identity of the Palembang community. However, modernization and globalization have led to a decline in public understanding, especially among the younger generation, regarding local culture, including Rumah Limas. This community service activity aims to improve cultural literacy regarding Rumah Limas as the local identity of South Sumatra through a cultural communication approach. The method used was a qualitative approach with descriptive field methods and communal action. The activity was conducted at Museum Balaputera Dewa involving junior and senior high school students, youth communities, local communities, visitors, cultural experts, and Rumah Limas owners. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, discussions, and documentation. The results showed an increase in participants’ understanding of the history, philosophy, social functions, and cultural values of Rumah Limas after participating in cultural education activities. Participants also demonstrated greater enthusiasm and awareness regarding the importance of preserving local culture as the identity of the South Sumatran community. This activity indicates that a cultural communication approach can be an effective medium for improving community cultural literacy and supporting the preservation of regional cultural heritage.

Abstract

Fotokopi Mitra Abadi is an example of a micro-enterprise whose financial and inventory management had not been properly documented. Previously, the owner relied solely on memory to track cash flow and merchandise stock. This issue was addressed through our community service program. We developed easy-to-use financial and inventory report formats, then trained the owner directly. Four stages were carried out in the field: observation, designing the report format, conducting training (using both handwritten and digital methods via Microsoft Excel), and evaluating the owner's understanding through Q&A sessions. This mentoring program produced real results—the owner's understanding jumped sharply, with the pretest score of only 10% rising to 80% on the posttest. To keep things simple, the cash book was designed to be as straightforward as possible. It includes key columns such as date, transaction details, cash in and cash out, and final balance calculations, reinforced with periodic report summaries. Inventory management, meanwhile, is handled through a stock control sheet containing item names, units, records of incoming and outgoing goods, and remaining stock, operating on the First In First Out (FIFO) method.

Abstract

Coral identification is an important competency for marine science students because it supports ecosystem monitoring, coral reef conservation, restoration, and sustainable ornamental coral aquaculture. This community engagement activity aimed to provide students with knowledge and field experience in recognizing coral growth forms and visual characteristics with potential ornamental value. The activity was conducted at Bintang Samudera Marine Education Park, Sawapudo Village, through two main stages: a land-based coral identification simulation and direct field observation. The simulation included lectures, introduction to coral growth forms, identification sheets, photographic documentation techniques, and safety briefings. Field activities involved four diving teams, each consisting of four students, for a total of 16 student divers accompanied by diving assistants. Students without adequate diving skills conducted coral identification exercises in the intertidal zone under lecturer supervision. The participants observed and documented several coral morphotypes with potential ornamental value, particularly branching and tabular branching corals. The activity also stimulated students’ interest in coral transplantation, ornamental coral aquaculture, conservation, and marine entrepreneurship. Future activities should be conducted periodically and incorporate pre- and post-training assessments, standardized photographic catalogues, and coral growth monitoring to provide quantitative evidence of participants’ competency development.

Abstract

This community service program aims to increase community literacy regarding the cultivation and utilization of moringa (Moringa oleifera) as a stunting prevention strategy while simultaneously opening economic opportunities through processing value-added products. The program was implemented in Medan Sinembah Village, Tanjung Morawa District, Deli Serdang Regency, using a participatory approach through outreach, cultivation training, food processing demonstrations, and mentoring of family micro-enterprises. The implementation method used a practice-based community education model with pre-post evaluations to measure participants' understanding. Results showed increased community knowledge about the nutritional value of moringa, product processing skills, and the emergence of business opportunities based on processed moringa products. This activity demonstrates that utilizing local resources through an economic and nutritional literacy approach can have both social and economic impacts. This program is recommended for sustainable development through synergy between villages, universities, and local business groups.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (PkM) aims to enhance the ecological awareness and understanding of the residents of Bahal Batu 1 Village, Siborongborong District, North Tapanuli Regency, through an ecotheological approach grounded in Christian values. This program was implemented as part of the University’s Tri Dharma mandate in addressing various environmental issues faced by the community, including inadequate waste management practices, the habit of open waste burning, the excessive use of agricultural chemicals, and a low level of awareness regarding environmental conservation. The method employed was Participatory Action Research (PAR), consisting of several stages, including preparation, needs assessment, program implementation, and community mentoring. The activities were carried out through educational outreach, participatory discussions, biblical reflection, and environmental education on waste management, water resource conservation, reforestation, and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The results of the program indicated an increase in the community’s understanding of the relationship between the Christian faith and the responsibility to care for the environment as an expression of lived faith. Community members began to recognize that environmental conservation is not merely a social responsibility, but also a moral and spiritual obligation as part of their stewardship of God's creation.

Abstract

This community service initiative aims to enhance knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of a clean and healthy lifestyle, which is a crucial factor in improving health outcomes. Adopting such a lifestyle offers a greater chance of healthy growth, protection against various infectious diseases, and an improved quality of life. The issue faced by the partner community was a lack of awareness concerning the importance of clean and healthy living practices. The implementation employed a participatory approach involving stages of outreach, education, mentoring, and evaluation. The results indicate an increase in participants' knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of a clean and healthy lifestyle—specifically concerning personal and environmental hygiene, the consumption of nutritious food, the use of clean water, and the habit of washing hands before meals and after activities. This activity has made a positive contribution to fostering healthy living habits and supporting efforts to improve public health in Senembah Village.
