Abstract

The utilization of digital archives holds potential to enhance primary source literacy, yet its pedagogical integration with Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) remains largely examined in isolation. This study aims to analyze the theoretical potential and epistemological boundaries of digital archives as historical evidence, map their application across the seven components of CTL, and formulate a Digital Archive-Integrated CTL conceptual synthesis. Employing a qualitative literature review method adapting the PRISMA framework, a search across four academic databases (Scopus, Google Scholar, Garuda, and SINTA) yielded N = 250 articles, from which n = 20 final articles were selected through a screening process as the primary units of analysis. Data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis and conceptual mapping. Findings indicate that digital archives serve to facilitate historical reasoning (sourcing, contextualization, and corroboration). The characteristics of digital archiving functionally connect with the seven components of CTL (constructivism, inquiry, questioning, learning community, modeling, reflection, and authentic assessment). The novelty of this study lies in formulating a conceptual synthesis that transforms digital archives from passive repositories into structured active pedagogical instruments. These findings offer pedagogical implications for history teachers in designing contextual and critical primary source-based learning.

Abstract

Cio Tao is one of the cultural heritages of the Chinese Benteng community in Tangerang, associated with traditional wedding ceremonies and the intergenerational transmission of cultural values. This study aims to examine the history of the Cio Tao tradition in Tangerang, analyze the meanings embedded in its implementation, and describe the perceptions of the younger Chinese generation toward the tradition in modern life. The study employed a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving administrators of Boen Tek Bio Temple, Chinese community figures, younger members of the community, and representatives of the Tangerang City Culture and Tourism Office. The findings indicate that Cio Tao developed alongside the history of Chinese migration and the formation of the Chinese Benteng community, while adapting to the social context of Tangerang. The series of rituals, from pre-wedding preparations, prayers, hair-combing, tea ceremony, to closing prayers and family banquets, embodies respect for ancestors, filial devotion to parents, family harmony, responsibility, and togetherness. The younger generation considers Cio Tao relevant, although some aspects of its implementation may be simplified. Thus, Cio Tao functions as a space for transmitting and constructing Chinese cultural identity while continuously adapting to social change.

Abstract

This study examines cultural transmission and youth participation in the "Galuh Rahayu" colossal Jaipong dance in Ciamis, West Java. It aims to analyze how Jaipong knowledge and practices are transmitted through training and performance processes and how young people participate in sustaining local culture. A qualitative case study approach was employed. Data were collected through observations of 12 training sessions and the final performance, semi-structured interviews with 22 participants comprising the main choreographer, assistant choreographers, young dancers, senior mentors, and festival organizers, as well as photographic and video documentation. Data were analyzed thematically through coding, theme development, and refinement. The findings reveal five main mechanisms: choreography simplification, mentoring systems, youth collaboration, cultural meanings embedded in movement and musicality, and collective performance. The findings demonstrate that young people function both as recipients and agents of cultural transmission. The study highlights that Jaipong sustainability is shaped through collective practice, youth participation, and cultural adaptation.

Abstract

This study compares the educational thought of Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, Ibn Miskawayh, Al-Ghazali, and Ibn Khaldun across five analytical dimensions: human nature, knowledge, educational aims, formative methods, and social function. This qualitative library study selected the thinkers purposively according to historical significance, conceptual relevance, and analytical complementarity. Propositions from the primary corpus were coded in a thinker-by-dimension matrix, reconstructed in context, and compared to identify convergence, divergence, and contextual specificity. The findings show convergence on education as the transformation of human capacities toward valuable knowledge and action, alongside substantial differences in anthropology, knowledge hierarchy, ultimate orientation, formative mechanism, and social scale. The study’s principal contribution is a relational model: educational aims, content, methods, and social function vary with the underlying conception of the human person. The synthesis is therefore a researcher-constructed comparison rather than a unified doctrine attributed to the six thinkers. Its contemporary implications are heuristic and require empirical testing before informing educational practice or policy.

Abstract

Siak Sri Indrapura Palace is a historical heritage of the Siak Sultanate that has developed into one of the cultural tourism destinations in Siak Regency. This study aimed to (1) describe the development of Siak Sri Indrapura Palace as a cultural tourism destination from 2004 to 2024 and (2) analyze the factors supporting its development. This study employed a historical method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through literature studies, interviews, and documentation using primary and secondary sources, and were analyzed through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings showed that the development of Siak Palace involved strengthening cultural heritage preservation, improving buildings and collections, developing tourism facilities and infrastructure, organizing cultural activities, promoting tourism, and utilizing digital technology. Tourist visits fluctuated during the research period, particularly declining during the COVID-19 pandemic before increasing again in 2024. Therefore, Siak Palace has developed not only as a historical heritage site but also as a cultural and educational tourism destination. These findings can serve as a consideration for improving the preservation, management, and promotion of Siak Palace as a sustainable cultural tourism destination.

Abstract

The ikat weaving tradition in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, represents ancestral knowledge, spiritual values, regional identity, and collective social memory. This article examines women's roles in preserving NTT ikat weaving and its implications for heritage-based history education. The study employs a qualitative literature review with systematic literature search and selection procedures using Google Scholar, Scopus, SINTA, DOAJ, and Web of Science. The literature was analyzed through thematic synthesis. The findings reveal three main patterns: women transmit weaving skills and cultural values across generations; ikat weaving represents community identity and social memory; and the continuity of the tradition faces challenges related to generational renewal and limited institutional support. These findings highlight the potential of ikat weaving as a contextual and inclusive resource for local history education. Digital technologies, including Augmented Reality, may also be considered as alternative learning media.

Abstract

This study fills a gap in the literature regarding how tradition-based tourism performances can serve as a medium for preservation and as a space for negotiation between cultural authenticity and the demands of tourism commodification. Two of the research member are traditional performing arts practitioners, therefore the observation method used is participatory observation, supported by in-depth interviews and literature review. Participatory observation was conducted on the performance activities of the tourism package at the Sonobudoyo Museum. In-depth interviews were conducted with artists, creators, and academics. Literature review was conducted to find data on traditional performing arts, entertainment arts, and art preservation. This study found both positive and negative impacts of organizing arts entertainment packages for tourism. The positive impact is seen in the number of artists who are regularly involved, creating a good regeneration process for traditional artists, and providing benefits for wayang topeng craftsmen. The negative impact is seen in the inconsistency between preservation efforts and the performances presented, especially in terms of the quality of authenticity. Further research is needed, particularly regarding tourist responses to the performances offered by these art tourism packages. This study fills a gap in the literature regarding how tradition-based tourism performances can serve as a medium for preservation and as a space for negotiation between cultural authenticity and the demands of tourism commodification. Abstract

Traditional leadership in indigenous communities faces social change and the strengthening of formal government, so the central question is how customary leadership continues to function and which values sustain it. Previous studies of the Kuta Traditional Village have mostly highlighted the role of customary figures in cultural preservation, while Tritangtu di Buana has generally been discussed through Sundanese manuscripts and political philosophy rather than as a framework for reading living leadership practice. This study aims to analyze the leadership structure, the implementation of Resi, Ratu, and Rama values, and the relationship between customary leadership and formal government in the Kuta Traditional Village. It employed a descriptive qualitative method supported by a historical approach; data were collected through passive participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings show that customary leadership is carried out collectively by the Pupuhu Adat, Sesepuh Lembur, Kuncen, and Ajengan, and that Tritangtu di Buana appears not as three formal offices but as a division of functions: safeguarding values (Resi), coordination (Ratu), and community participation through deliberation (Rama). The relationship with formal government runs through a division of authority and coordination. This study contributes to the study of traditional Sundanese leadership by showing that Tritangtu di Buana can serve as a framework of balance for reading contemporary customary leadership.

Abstract

The use of film in history learning is increasingly common, but studies on film to understand the concept of colonial power relations are still limited. Through the film Bumi Manusia, this study aims to describe the representation of colonial power relations in discursive, non-discursive practices, and the materialization of discourse; analyze the theorization of the theme of colonial power relations and the form of resistance of the character Minke; and explore its potential as a source of historical learning. The study uses the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method. Data collection and analysis were carried out using the Jäger & Maier model of thematic document analysis. The results of the study show (1) The film Bumi Manusia represents colonial power relations through the use of language, actions, and visual symbols that reflect domination and social inequality between Europeans and indigenous peoples; (2) The resistance of the character Minke to hegemonic relations emphasizes the importance of the role of education as an instrument of liberation from social injustice; (3) The film Bumi Manusia has the potential to be a source of historical learning that fosters critical thinking skills, historical awareness, and learning motivation through deep learning strategies. This study contributes to enriching history learning strategies in understanding the concept of colonial power relations according to the student’s context.

Abstract

The Gembyungan performing art in the Nyangku tradition of Panjalu, Ciamis, reflects the interaction between Islamic values and local Sundanese culture that has been maintained across generations. This study aims to analyze the forms of syncretism between Islamic values and local customs in Gembyungan and its function as a medium of cultural harmonization in the dissemination of Islamic teachings. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving cultural figures, Gembyungan performers, and community representatives. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal four forms of syncretism: the integration of Islamic and local elements in musical instruments, the adaptation of Al-Barzanji verses to Sundanese vocal styles, the interpretation of heirloom purification as spiritual self-purification, and the religious interpretation of the ritual's timing. Gembyungan also functions as a medium for Islamic preaching, social solidarity, cultural-religious regeneration, and harmonization between Islam and local customs. The study shows that Gembyungan serves as a cultural medium that supports the continuity of local identity and Islamic values.
