Abstract

Jalungmas dance is a new dance created by the people of Cilacap, Indonesia. This dance is adapted from Jaipong and Calung Banyumasan dances, formed from the cultural background of coastal communities, which not only feature beautiful movements and music, but also contain deep meanings that reflect their lives, values, and characters. The research aims to analyze Jalungmas dance as a representation of coastal communities, uncover the meanings and symbols contained within it, and examine the reflection of character from an ecological perspective. Using qualitative methods and an interdisciplinary approach, including observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study show that this dance represents the close relationship between the community and its natural surroundings, reflected in the movements, props, and musical accompaniment of the dance. Its meaning encompasses harmony, unity, togetherness, independence, and respect for nature. The symbols used reinforce the community's identity as fishermen. This dance also reflects a resilient, adaptive character that upholds local wisdom in living a life close to the sea. In addition, it represents and reflects a hard-working character that is adaptive to the environment. This dance is a medium for preserving local culture and strengthening identity. The research is expected to provide new insights into understanding dance as a representation of society and preserving a cultural heritage that is rich in meaning and noble values.

Abstract

Abstract

This research is motivated by the demands of the school literacy movement (SLM) to integrate critical literacy in history learning and the low historical thinking skills of students. The main objective of this research is to analyze the implementation of the literacy school movement in the learning stage developing the historical thinking skills of students in grades X IIS (Social Sciences) and XI IIS at State Senior High School 2 Mojokerto City. The method used in compiling this research is a qualitative research method. The results of this study empirically prove that, in the context of SLM, critical literacy is not only a supplement, but also makes teachers no longer the sole source of truth, rather becoming facilitators who shape and develop students' historical thinking through critical questions and answers. The conclusion of this study is that the SLM learning stage in developing historical thinking, the indicators of findings based on Stéphane Lévesque's concept of historical thinking, history teachers in this school are transformed into critical discussion facilitators and learning resources and students are able to construct their own narratives and analyze historical events based on evidence they find outside of textbooks.

Abstract

The tatera karau ritual is an important traditional practice among the indigenous community of East Kobalima, Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara. This ritual is performed in various customary events related to joyful (lia mutin) and mourning (lia metan) ceremonies. This study aims to describe the implementation process of the ritual and analyze the historical values embedded within it. The research employs a qualitative approach using an ethnographic method, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis in four traditional villages in East Kobalima. Data were analyzed through stages of data reduction, data display, and verification. The findings reveal that the tatera karau ritual consists of five main stages: tur mutuk (initial deliberation), preparation of ritual equipment, delivery of customary speech, determination of ritual performers, and the core ritual execution. The ritual reflects key historical values, including local wisdom, respect for ancestral spirits, and the reinforcement of communal identity and social cohesion.

Abstract

This study examines the historical development and creative economy dynamics of the Cigeureung batik industry in Tasikmalaya City, addressing a critical gap between economic history and local creative industry studies. Existing batik research predominantly focuses on major production centers in Java, while historically grounded analyses of peripheral batik industries remain limited. Employing a historical method with a qualitative approach encompassing heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography this study reveals that the Cigeureung batik industry has transformed from a traditional household-based activity into an adaptive creative industry integrating design innovation, production strategies, and digital marketing. Despite this progress, sustainability is constrained by structural challenges, including competition from mass-produced textiles and weak artisan regeneration. This study contributes to advancing economic history perspectives within the discourse of culture-based creative industries.

Abstract

This study examines the spatial management traditions of the Kampung Kuta indigenous community in Ciamis, exploring the underlying cultural values and their implications for environmental sustainability. Using a qualitative descriptive case study approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The results reveal that Kampung Kuta’s spatial system is governed by local wisdom known as pamali, which functions as both a social norm and a spatial regulation. These rules dictate the use of natural materials for stilt houses and uniform settlement patterns that reflect simplicity and social cohesion. Furthermore, the strictly preserved sacred forest plays a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance and water conservation. The study concludes that these traditions form an integrated socio-cultural and ecological system that serves as a model for sustainable spatial planning. Pamali operates simultaneously across normative, symbolic, and ecological dimensions, offering valuable insights for modern sustainable management.

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of the recognition of Baduy customary land rights from colonial state domination to constitutional recognition in modern Indonesia (1870–2022). Employing a historical method through a literature review, the study draws on primary and secondary sources, including government documents, books, and scholarly journal articles. The findings indicate that the Agrarische Wet of 1870, through the principle of Domeinverklaring, systematically negated customary land rights and classified ulayat land as state property for agrarian exploitation during the Dutch colonial period. However, due to their small population and distinct socio-spatial patterns, the Baduy community largely escaped strict implementation of this policy, allowing them to retain de facto control over their customary territory. This condition persisted during the New Order era, when the recognition of customary law remained conditional and administratively limited. A significant paradigm shift occurred in the Reform era, particularly following decentralization and Constitutional Court Decision No. 35/PUU-X/2012, which redefined the Baduy as legal subjects entitled to de jure protection. Regional regulations, notably Lebak Regency Regulation No. 17/1990 and its subsequent amendments up to 2022, became key instruments for territorial delineation, customary protection, and human rights. Despite legal advancements, implementation continues to face structural and cultural challenges. This study underscores the urgency of strengthening sustainable protection of Baduy customary land rights.

Abstract

The diversity of historic buildings in Surakarta offers a fresh topic for historical research to illustrate past cultures. This study aims to analyze the variety of architectural styles of residential buildings in Surakarta from 1745 to 1930, covering the transition from the purely traditional era to the influence of colonial modernity. The method employed is the historical method, beginning with heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. This study utilizes interdisciplinary approaches within architecture as a supporting methodology, specifically visual analysis of architectural artifacts in the form of photographic archives. The research findings indicate that during the 1745–1930 period, residential architecture in the city of Surakarta was dominated by traditional Javanese architecture, with each type distributed across areas influenced by the Javanese cosmological concept of kuthanagara, such as Joglo, limasan, kampung, and panggang-pe. European architecture is evident in the use of the Indische Empire style, which has undergone degradation, while Chinese architecture is evident in shop-house buildings as a measure of economic efficiency. This research can serve as a reference for the development of urban history or local history materials using an interdisciplinary learning approach, thereby serving as an effort to increase students’ interest in learning.
