Abstract

Firearms and gunpowder are commodities commonly sold during the early European arrival to Indonesia, including Nusantara. Similar to the spice trade, there was intense competition among the Europeans in arms trading. With that, the orientation of this research is to show the rivalry between 2 main trading factions on trading in Nusantara during the 16th and 17th centuries: Portugal and The Netherlands. As a historical study, this research applies the historical method as its research method. Reconstruction results show that European traders’ decision to make firearms an import commodity cannot be separated from the popularity of the war instrument in the warfare of their home continent. Initially, Portugal managed to consolidate its power as a dominant firearms trader in Nusantara after they conquered Malacca in 1511. Their domination slowly faded after the arrival of VOC ships during the late 16th century culminating in the takeover of Malacca in 1641. Therefore, it can be said that the firearms trading competition in Nusantara during this period reflects the trend of warfare at the time alongside the relations of various European nations outside their homelands.

Abstract

The colonisation of Trimurjo that occurred in 1935-1942 was an initiation of the Dutch Colonial to implement ethical politics, although in reality it was solely to benefit the Dutch who at that time were experiencing a post-world war crisis. This research aims to explore the local history of Trimurjo colonisation in 1935-1942. In order for the research to be well structured and fulfil the writing rules, the author uses the historical research method. This historical method is a tool to identify a historical event in which it contains systematic principles and rules, there are four stages in the historical research method, among others, heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. These stages are closely related and cannot be separated, so that the results of the research have suitability and can be accounted for. The result of this research is evidence of colonisation in Trimurjo by Dutch colonials whose aim was to open agricultural land and exploit natural resources. This can be seen from the various relics that still exist today in the form of a steel bridge located in Batang Hari Ogan Village, Agroguruh Dam, and sluice gates that still stand firm and function properly until now. The existence of these relics can prove that during the Dutch government had colonised Trimurjo in 1935. Trimurjo colonisation is one of the local histories that is important to learn so that the values in it are not lost in time.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the military education policy implemented by Japan. Although intended to support their war efforts, this policy successfully ignited a spirit of nationalism and became a crucial factor in Indonesia’s struggle for independence. This research employs the historical research method. The data analysis process involves several steps: heuristics, historical criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results indicate that the military education applied in Indonesia aimed to support Japan’s war efforts. However, this policy inadvertently sparked a sense of nationalism among Indonesian youth, leading to a strengthened movement for Indonesian independence. The formation of the Pasukan Pembela Tanah Air (PETA) was one significant policy that provided military training to Indonesian youth, who eventually became the backbone of the independence struggle. The strict educational practices of the Japanese successfully forged strong character and a spirit of resistance among the youth.

Abstract

This thesis examines the influence of the Agrarian Law of 1870 on the existence of the Arab community in Ampel, Surabaya, from 1870 to 1930. The issues addressed include the historical emergence of the Agrarian Law, its implementation, and its impact on the socio-economic conditions of the Arab community. This research employs historical methodology through steps of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, utilizing both historical and sociological approaches. The historical approach narrates events in chronological order, while the sociological approach reveals social processes using social change and economic development theory. The findings indicate that the Agrarian Law of 1870 arose in response to abuses within the Cultivation System and the influence of liberal thought in Europe. Its implementation encompasses regulations regarding Agrarian matters (Agrarische Besluit) and the granting of Erfpacht rights, which established social strata within Surabaya’s society, placing the Arab community of Ampel in the second tier as economic distributors. This article argues that the repercussion of the 1870 Agrarian Law had implications for the economic and social life of the Arab community, while also fostering the emergence of solidarity against foreign cultural impositions, reflected in the establishment of special schools for Arabs and natives.
