Abstract

This research examines the vocabulary profile in 8th grade Indonesian EFL textbooks published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education in 2022 through a corpus-based approach. The study is aimed to draw a vocabulary profile of high-, mid- and low-frequency based category of vocabulary levels. In addition, the research also reports the estimated number of vocabulary size required to promote an adequate reading comprehension, where 95% and 98% coverage are regarded as the threshold. The textbook examined was obtained from the Indonesian Book Information System and prepared as analyzable corpora. The corpora consist of 27188 tokens is analyzed using Range program to obtain preliminary data analysis. The first research question revealed that the textbook contains approximately 85% of high-frequency words, followed by 7% and 0.3% of mid- and low- frequency words respectively. The second research question showed that in order to reach reading comprehension threshold of 95%, the learners need the knowledge of 3000 word-families, and additional one-thousand-word families to reach 98% of text coverage. At the end, the findings of this study suggest pedagogical implication for teachers, practical implication for textbook authors, and basis for subsequent research.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of evaluation practices in developing students' productive skills in Indonesian Language Learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), particularly in speaking and writing. Using a mixed methods approach, data were collected through speaking and writing tests, questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observations. The findings show that consistent evaluation frequency and relevant learning contexts significantly influence students’ perceptions and the development of their productive skills. Performance-based evaluations—such as monologues, dialogues, and writing tasks grounded in real-life situations—were found to be the most effective and meaningful. However, feedback delivery remains a major weakness, as many students felt that the feedback they received was too vague and not helpful enough for improving their skills. Therefore, there is a need to develop an evaluation system that is not only regular and contextual but also provides practical and targeted feedback. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for designing more effective BIPA evaluation strategies, focusing on strengthening speaking and writing skills, and supporting students in becoming active users of the Indonesian language in their daily lives.

Abstract

Technology plays an important role in English language learning, especially in vocabulary acquisition. This research is motivated by several problems faced by the students of secondary school in North Sumatra related to English vocabulary. This study aims to explore the students' perceptions of using Essential Vocabulary application to learn English vocabulary. A qualitative case study method was used, involving one class of 20 students in the eighth grade of a secondary school in North Sumatra. Students consisted of both males and females in grade eight. The data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The students completed a thirty-minute questionnaire and five selected students were interviewed in more depth on the use of the Essential Vocabulary app. The findings of this study revealed five main themes in students' perceptions regarding the use of the Essential Vocabulary app. The five main themes are: usability, effectiveness, interactivity, confidence and motivation, and the last is satisfaction.

Abstract

The study looks at the work-related motivation and dedication of educators and education staff in the Seventh-day Adventist Church Organization (SDA Church) in the Luwu Tanah Toraja Mission Area as indicators of their performance. The Seventh-day Adventist Church Organization (SDA Church) in the Luwu Tana Toraja Mission Area employs educators and education professionals, and the study examines their work-related motivation and dedication as performance indicators. This study found that motivation and commitment significantly predict the performance of educators and education personnel; however, motivation shows a more dominant influence compared to work commitment. These results support the importance of motivation and commitment in improving performance, although they only account for 16.9% of the variance. Further research is recommended to investigate other variables that affect performance and to expand the scope of the study.

Abstract

This study explores how students use idioms acquired from English movies to improve communication skills and how More Knowledgeable Other, henceforth mentioned as MKO, helped students comprehend the idioms. The Optimal Input Hypothesis by Krashen and Mason (2020) and the Sociocultural Theory by Vygotsky (1978) were the theoretical basis for conducting the research. The survey was conducted using an open-ended questionnaire distributed online to UNNES' English Literature and English Education students who enjoy watching English movies and have passed Idiom-Based Lexical Studies course. The thematic analysis method proposed by Braun and Clarke (2006) was used to analyze the collected data. The result of the study shows that most of the participants agree that English movies help them acquire more idiomatic expressions supported by human and technological scaffolding. Participants also shared that the idiomatic expressions acquired from English movies improve their communication and writing skills. This research reveals that giving more input from English movies encourages students to use idioms in both spoken and written expressions. In addition, MKOs play roles in supporting students' process of understanding idiomatic expressions acquired from English movies, and the more preferred one is technology MKO.

Abstract

Advancements in technology have significantly impacted literacy instruction, particularly in improving reading comprehension. Despite the growing number of digital reading platforms, many learners, including students in educational settings, continue to struggle with deep comprehension. The READABLE app, a digital reading platform that offers simplified English stories, was developed to address these challenges. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the READABLE app in enhancing pre-service teachers' ability to support reading comprehension. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed that pre-service teachers held highly positive perceptions of the READABLE app. Features such as interactivity, personalized materials, and automatic feedback were considered effective in increasing student engagement and learning outcomes. The app was also viewed as helpful for supporting students' understanding of texts by offering content tailored to their reading levels. Its engaging learning environment motivated students to read regularly, contributing to gradual and sustainable skill development. As such, the READABLE app is regarded as a valuable tool in supporting English language learning, especially for improving overall reading comprehension

Abstract

Exploitation involves treating someone unfairly for personal gain or utilizing something to gain an advantage. This research explore the theme of exploitation in H.G Wells' The Invisible Man through a marxist literary lens, focus on three main findings: Griffin's exploitation of others through dehumanization and intrumentalization of labor, his dual role as both a victim and an agent of exploitation, and the social reactions to his actions, particularly in the forms of fear and resistance. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research chose selected excerpts and interpreted them within the framework of Marxist theory. This analysis reveals how Griffin, a scientific genius who becomes a tool for domination, reducing others to mere instruments for his personal gain. At the same time, he also plays both roles as victim and agent of exploitation. At the end, this study reveals how society responds to Griffin's actions throughout the story, showing how fear can evolve into resistance when oppressive power threatens social stability. These results highlight Wells' critique of the capitalist exploitation of human potential as well as the complicated relationship between fear, resistance, and power in modern society.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the effectiveness of Scrabble as a game-based learning tool in enhancing students’ English vocabulary mastery. Vocabulary acquisition is a foundational component of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning; however, conventional methods often fail to engage students meaningfully. Scrabble has emerged as an educational game that combines linguistic strategy, interactivity, and contextual learning, making it a promising alternative to traditional approaches. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method guided by the PRISMA framework, the researchers identified and evaluated 30 eligible studies conducted in Indonesia between 2020 and 2025. These studies were selected based on relevance to Scrabble’s application in vocabulary instruction across elementary to tertiary education levels. The review found consistent evidence that Scrabble improves vocabulary mastery by increasing learner motivation, engagement, retention, and contextual understanding. Supporting factors include the game's interactive nature, adaptability to various learning levels, and ability to foster collaborative and student-centered environments. However, inhibiting factors such as initial rule confusion, classroom management challenges, and limited digital literacy among teachers may reduce its effectiveness if not addressed through proper implementation strategies. Substantially, this review concludes that Scrabble is a flexible and pedagogically sound method for vocabulary enhancement, provided that educators apply structured guidance and inclusive practices. The findings offer valuable insights for teachers, curriculum designers, and educational policymakers seeking to integrate innovative, game-based strategies into EFL instruction

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of Augmented Reality (AR) on students’ vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu. Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect of language learning, yet many students struggle to master it due to lack of motivation and conventional teaching methods. To address this problem, the researcher applied AR-based learning using the Assemble Edu application, which provides 3D visuals and interactive features to improve engagement. This study used a quasi-experimental method with two groups: an experimental class that received AR-based instruction and a control class that received traditional instruction. Both classes were given a pre-test and post-test to measure vocabulary mastery. The results showed a significant improvement in the experimental class, with an average post-test score of 82.00, compared to 59.80 in the pre-test. Meanwhile, the control class only increased from 63.00 to 72.40. Statistical analysis using SPSS showed that the difference between the two groups was significant (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.001), indicating that AR had a strong positive effect on vocabulary acquisition. These findings support previous research showing that AR enhances motivation, memory retention, and contextual understanding in language learning. The use of AR aligns with constructivist learning theory and supports the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes student-centered and technology-integrated learning. In conclusion, AR-based learning can effectively improve students’ vocabulary mastery and is recommended as a modern instructional strategy in English language teaching

Abstract

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski is one of the most prominent example of ergodic literature and post-modern work that utilizes unconventional literary tools. Despite the thorough researchs regarding its metafictional nature and symbolic representations, however, there is still little amount of research that studies the novel from a feminist perspective. This study aims to fulfill that gap by examining the female characters in the novel using feminist theories such as Simone de Beauvoir's Other and Judith Butler's performativity. Findings show that House of Leaves depicts its female characters in contradictory ways, both as passive objects and active agents. In spite of these findings, critical analysis of the deliberation of the female characters' actions is still crucial. These instances becomes an example of how the novel shows a tension between its unconventional nature and gender politics. This study contributes to feminist literary critique by emphasizing the need to examine gender inequality even in experimental novels.
