Abstract

This study examines the lack of English vocabulary in students, especially in nouns and verbs. This study aims to analyze the effect of self-assessment method on grade XI students of SMK Negeri 1 Mepanga. The research method used was quasi-experimental using pretest-posttest. The research sample consisted of 71 students who were divided into experimental group (34 students) and control group (37 students) as samples using total sampling technique. Data analysis using the Mann-Whitney test (SPSS 24). The Mann-Whitney test is used to compare two independent groups with ordinal or interval data that are not normally distributed. The test results show that the test statistic is 0.001, which is smaller than 0.05, meaning that the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the control class and the experimental class. This finding shows that the self-assessment method can improve students' English vocabulary. This research contributes to the development of learning strategies that can be applied to build higher order thinking skills in EFL students. The results of this study provide valuable insights for students, teachers, and future researchers.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to examine the effectiveness of contextual teaching and learning (CTL) approach to improve writing skill of the tenth grade students at MAN Insan Cendekia Kota Palu. The research employs pre- experimental research design. The population of this research is Grade X students at MAN Insan Cendekia Kota Palu, and the sample is Grade X Al-Qolam, consisting of 20 students. The researcher employs purposive sampling technique and takes one-group pre-test and post-test. The pre-test is administered to assess the student’s writing ability through the CTL Approach and to determine whether the class is equal or not in terms of their writing achievement before the treatment is given, and the post-test is used to administer students’ writing skill achievement after receiving the treatment. The result of the data analysis indicates that there is a significant difference in the students’ achievement in pre-test and post-test. It shows that the mean score of pre-test is ( 60.59) and the mean score of post-test is (76.33). The sig value (Asymp. 2-tailed) is 0.000, which is smaller than the p-value = 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, the contextual teaching and learning approach is effective in improving the writing skill of grade X students at MAN Insan Cendekia Kota Palu.

Abstract

English as a lingua franca (EFL) and World Englishes (WEs) challenge traditional English language teaching paradigms that centred around native-speaker norms, often rooted in the ideology of native speakerism, a persuasive ideology in English language teaching, often leading to biases against No-native English Speaker Teachers (NNESTs). This study aims to understand pre-service English speaker teachers' overall attitudes toward NESTs and NNESTs and explore the factors influencing pre-service English teachers’ preferences. 15 pre-service English teachers in their fifth semester participated in this descriptive qualitative method, which was collected from the questionnaires and interviews. The results show positive attitudes towards NESTs and NNESTs, with a slightly negative attitude towards NNESTs in teaching pronunciation due to native speakerism. In terms of pedagogy, NESTs are engaging and varied in approach, while NNESTs are monotonous but provide bilingual support. Culturally, NESTs provide first-hand exposure, but NNESTs highlight global English diversity. Linguistically, students prefer NESTs for genuine pronunciation of authentic language elements such as slang. These findings reveal there is a tendency for native-speakerism with evidence from participants’ responses. Further studies can expand this research by looking into ways to reduce biases and improve teamwork between NESTs and NNESTs.

Abstract

The influence of the English language has increased the need for English language proficiency. Derived from the typical challenges to English language speaking proficiency (ELSP) of Indonesian students in West Indonesia, this study aimed to examine the relationships of the influencers of ELSP (motivation, language anxiety, environmental support, teachers’ communicative competence, assessment, and teaching strategies) to understand better the related problems in speaking English. It also sought the best predictive model of ELSP that may help English language learners in West Indonesia. After employing a postpositivist research paradigm, a correlational research design was used to obtain the perceptions of 251 simple randomly selected university students from West Indonesia. To gather data, 6 dependent variables were measured using 4 modified scales and 2 researcher-constructed scales. The students’ ELSP (dependent variable) was measured using their English Language 3 speaking scores. The final data analysis used Pearson’s r correlation and Structural Equation Modeling. Results revealed that none of the influencers had a significant correlation with ELSP. The data collected did not support the proposed conceptual framework and the theories used in this study. Such results find the need for alternative ways to enhance the ELSP of university students in West Indonesia. This study can be replicated with different samples to identify the causes of the mismatch of theories used in this study, since Indonesia has not officially accepted English as a second language.
