Abstract

Language style is very important to learn to understand a literary work, because everyone has a different language style. The purpose of this study is to determine the type of language style used by Lewis and the social factors that influence the style of language in the novel. The researcher applies a sociolinguistic approach using Martin Joos' theory which divides five language styles, namely frozen style, formal style, consultative style, relaxed style, and familiar style. In this thesis, qualitative method is used to analyze the problem. The researcher found 46 data of the language style, they are frozen style 8 (17.4%), formal style data 8 (17.4%), consultative style data 9 (19.5%), casual style 17 data (37%), and intimate style 4 (8.7%). The findings also show that there were 52 data from social factors that influence the use of language styles, they are participants 20 (39%), setting 2 (4%), topic 22 (41%), and function 8 (16%). In this study, the most dominant style of language is the casual style, while the social factor that most influences the use of language style in this novel is the topic.

Abstract

A good mathematical thinking process for prospective students, mathematics teachers is a necessity that needs to be had. The purpose of this study is to describe the profile of the mathematical thinking process of prospective mathematics teacher students based on Field Dependent and Field Independent learning styles in solving mathematical problems. The method of research is descriptive-qualitative research. The research subjects taken were 3 mathematics education students for Field Dependent type learning styles and 3 people for Field Independent types. Data collection techniques, namely: tests of mathematical thinking skills on statistical material, and interviews. Data analysis uses stages, namely: (1) data reduction; (2) present data based on Bransford & Stein Theory; (3) make conclusions. The results showed that the mathematical thinking process of prospective mathematics teacher students is 1) The field of independent learning style is more systematic in reading story problems, able to identify important information and classify it into mathematical models / variables. While field-dependent students tend to read questions globally and focus less on details; 2) in understanding the problem, FI students more quickly map the problem into relevant mathematical representations. FD students think deductively and need concrete examples to understand problems; 3) FI students are more creative and flexible in developing problem-solving strategies using various mathematical concepts and procedures. FD students more often use the standard strategies that have been taught. 4) FI students are meticulous and detailed in interpreting solutions back to the context of the original problem. FD students tend to focus on the end result without relating to the meaning of the problem.

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are crucial for developing students' critical thinking in mathematics learning; however, many students still struggle in this area. This study aims to analyze students' mathematical communication skills on the topic of triangles. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with six students as the research subjects. Data were collected through essay tests and interviews. The results show that overall, students' mathematical communication skills are categorized as high, with one indicator classified as very high, namely the ability to create models of situations or problems using oral, written, concrete, graphical, and algebraic methods. Three indicators are categorized as high: reflecting real objects, images, and diagrams into mathematical ideas; reading and understanding mathematical representations; and making conjectures, constructing arguments, and generalizing. One indicator is categorized as low, namely the ability to express daily events in mathematical language or symbols. Students tend to have difficulty connecting contextual problems to mathematical symbols. These findings highlight the importance of enhancing students' mathematical communication skills in the learning process.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is the most effective cognitive instrument in learning mathematics, and enhancing students' mathematical problem-solving ability is the primary objective of education. However, to reach the most effective level of mathematical problem-solving ability, we need to comprehend the reasons behind students' challenges while learning. This research investigates the learning obstacles of the students based on their mathematical problem-solving ability, particularly in algebraic form material. The method used in this research employed qualitative study with a series of Didactical Design Research (DDR) projects to learn the obstacles to the student's mathematical problem-solving ability. Seventy-six eighth-grade students from a public junior high school in Kampar region were given a test to assess their ability to solve mathematical problems. Various research instruments are used, including tests of mathematical problem-solving ability, interview guidelines, and interviews by audio recordings. The data were analyzed using a qualitative approach to determine students' learning obstacles. The findings highlight ontogenic, epistemological, and didactical obstacles students face while understanding the problem, particularly the concept of algebraic form, interpreting the word to the mathematical concept of algebraic form, and designing the algebraic forms.
